Alan, I agree that David's method is not a substitute for C41 process - it won't produce colour negatives. However, it is a viable method for developing C41 film in B&W chemistry. It gives better negatives (for both enlarging and scanning) than the straight forward development of C41 film in B&W chemistry. If OP choses to develop C41 film in B&W chemistry, then David's method is worth looking at.

David Lyga has given a method on photrio (previously apug) that can deal with Carey-Lea silver and give very decent negatives. His method (and its variants) take a few iterations to get everything right, but it works fine and I can vouch from my own experience.

 

Here are a couple of examples:

Kodak Signet 40 (Ektanar 46mm f3.5 lens) + Orwo UN54.

Rolleiflex 2.8F + Ilford HP5 Plus.

Canon P and Canon 7 with some expired Superia 400 film.

I couldn't resist the temptation and I grabbed my T70 for a quick shoot last evening. I liked it as much as my current favourite SLR, Nikon FM, though I sorely missed the film advance lever of the latter. :) The solid body though plastic and the firm grip are very helpful for handheld shooting.

I’ve been using Nikon FM exclusively for the past some time and it’s now time for some diversity! I’m thinking of either Canon EF (Black Beauty) or Canon T70 to go with Orwo N74. I’m also tempted to pick one of my TLRs up and shoot Ilford XP2 Super. Sun has been quite oppressive of late to venture out and I guess I’ll end up begging my daughters to pose for a few portraits!

I’ve a Fuji GW690ii loaded with HP5+ waiting to be used this weekend. I might also do some test shots with Nikon FM + Voigtlander 40mm + Arista 100.

It'll be Fuji GW690ii this weekend for me. I've five frames in the roll left to shoot.

I keep coming back to Nikon FM which is now my favourite 35mm camera. Today I shot a few frames of Arista 100.

I've my Fuji GW690II loaded with Ilford FP4 Plus. Late afternoon light is pretty good these days but the need to carry tripod with this camera is slowing me down.

Just now developed two rolls of Orwo UN54 in Jay Defehr's Obsidian Aqua. One roll was shot in Canon 7 + Russian 50mm lens and the other in Nikon FM + Nikkor 50mm AFD lens. I want to give Fuji GW690ii a try tomorrow but the lack of self-timer on this camera is a big let down.

I've a Canon 7 loaded with Arista 100. Light is great these days and I'm thinking of taking out my Fuji GW690ii in the weekend. FP4+ or Tri-X.

Unfortunately the 50mm FD lens that I paired with Canon EF "Black Beauty" has too much haze. Further, a cyclone is passing by and I don't feel excited to venture out.

So I ditched my original plan and decided to scan a few rolls that I had developed in the past few weeks.
