"The challenge is to pull it off without filters and photoshop tricks."

Ever hear of Ansel Adams, John? He was quite the filter and darkroom "tricks" man, from what I have read.

Richard van Hoesel has very eloquently expressed the same overall feelings I have about this eye-catching landscape shot, particularly his viewpoint regarding the techniques/tools used to obtain it relative to methods used in "classical" film photography for decades. While it's not my personal favorite in your large and very impressive collection of beautiful Alaskan landscape shots, it is nevertheless, IMO, a very fine and very eye-catching image, as are a great many others in your portfolio. It has also generated a lot of discussion, and that, after all, is one of the goals in selecting images for POW. IMO, the Elves have done well.

Really fantastic work that you're doing, Peter! I just discovered the new rating restrictions, but I'll stop back by soon. I'm really glad I discovered your portfolio. ;-)
  1. David, I stopped by to look at this photo after reading your post on the Site Feedback Forum. This is really a wonderful capture! I appreciate your frustration with the low ratings. I took a look at your portfolio, which is excellent and demonstrates a great deal of photographic talent.

If ratings from the "Rate Recent Photos" (RRP) queue remain anonymous, then "unjustly" low ratings will, unfortunately, come with the anonymity. Despite this, I am of the opinion that Brian made a wise decision in making direct ratings public and RR ratings anonymous. IMO, on the balance, the bad that comes with anonymous ratings (e.g., lowball ratings without accountability) is offset by the good, which is that honest ratings can now be given without fear of retaliation. In addition, the change may promote greater RRP participation, which would be a positive outcome for the site.

Very pleasing composition, Heidi, with nice lighting (sunrays) and good overall exposure. It would be interesting to see the same scene shot using a slower shutter speed to blur the motion of the water a bit. However, because of the sunrays in the photo, I don't know whether the result would be "better" than what you have here.
  2. Christos, you have submitted this image to the Photo Critique Forum. It has received a fair critique. If you are looking for more than a critique of the photo, I suggest you create a "Presentation" of this photo along with the others in the series and invite members whose opinions you respect to comment on the photo essay. The "circus" nature of this thread is a circus of your own creation.

    Regards,

    Steve
