1.
Allen what you say is correct but the point is that he didn't become recognized for his point of view over time but immediately and because making a comparison to life itself lets say life was a library and thousands of books and billions of pages and then trillions of words.
One could argue that any good reading would not be a waste of time but professional photographers have an aim a language and an identity and while it is true that despite any and all efforts your goal may succeed better on occasion and fail miserably in others the point is furthering ones direction as opposed to getting distracted by the endless choices however tempting.
In any event it was a different era when taste was more classic when it comes to the visual aspect but the approach is current and will be forever.
Now even antithesis of his approach are valid to someone who is trying to find whatever niche has not been used before however abominable it may be someone is going to promote it as being the newest best thing ever but his approach did not need promotion and will survive forever on its own merit as one of the worthy approaches to people photography.

 2.
surely not the case in Canada or US but Argentina has suffered many Military nationalist dictatorships who labeled anything foreign as " imperialist" way into the 90s and put in place arbitrary laws which made no sense but I agree with Mr de Bakker in that this is a Photography forum and shouldn't be rated on English skills. There are some great photographers who's first language is English but the relevant language imho should be visual and the spoken language to support the visuals instead of an ensuing evaluation of care versus carefulness and cost as if the end result doesn't matter then the cell phone suffices and any argument is purely anecdotic.

 3.
here is another funny signeage :)
"
Either you have mistyped a URL or something is seriously wrong with the photo.net Discussion Forums system."

 4.
here is one ordinance which yes is complete and utter ...
http://angryfrenchguy.com/2008/02/19/bill-101-hum-101-the-sign-law/

 5.
Dan My grandfather was Evita's official photographer as in " don't cry for me Argentina Evita."
His name was AAron but his birth cert reads " Guillermo" as in Canada and other countries it wasn't legal to use foreign languages in official document's such as birth certs . When we were in Canada a few years back at the set of Stallone's Movie DRIVEN there were signs on the street stating that signage in English at your own risk with a penalty of fine.
its like if your name was Charles and you have to put down Carlos on paper

 6.
BTW It is important to point out that Mr. Salomon has had a long and successful trajectory in the marketing of photographic products and I wish him the best of luck on his future pursuits.

 7.
The whole idea is to work fast. most big photographers in the city have assistant crews of 10 guys and up and shooting digital . film crews are huge just to shoot a couple of people because you don't have all day just to fiddle. Perhaps readers see this and find it silly as they calculate it as what they would do/ what it would take if they were the ones taking a shot with a grafmatic.
back in the day anyone who shot 4x5 with regular holders regardless of the type of camera would have a separate holders crew so their speed of work resembled medium format as much as possible.
You don't have to shoot a lot of film but you may want to if its amazing. sometimes ive done shoots with a couple of sheets per model change and sometimes ive done 5-10 shots of the same never more but sometimes I have to change film type or rate differently and so important not to be distracted. If you embark on such effort likely a client is paying and so It is important that it looks organized .
Also because back in the day you usedthe polaroid to check lighting and composition and now you use the digital for that and then you use the large format so your main guys are working on the shot as you usualy work and you need a crew to match the LF to that because most likely the 4x5 will be either the most significant shots of the job or the personal project side of the job but most will shoot film and digital concurrently and that is why you need two crews . Its not obligatory but a good idea .

 8.
English being a second language didn't prevent me from seeing there was a suspicion in the tone of the questioning which refers to competitiveness and retirement doesn't change the alertness of " he's up to something".
The forum allows announcements on products and trying to get assistants does not bring attention to a product.
Mr Salomon is retired and I have retired a long time ago from trying to make points.
True that a straight line may be the closest distance between two points but at a risk of sounding reiterative what is relevant to 4x5 hand held is no longer a necessity so in a way
what most consider " what's the point" ? is agreed pointless and so the plain English of the marketing of products by points ( in the traditional sense) is now IMHO pointless.
The only thing which hasn't changed is that after more than 40 years of photography The fewer pictures I have done with 4x5 have something which all the pushbutton and levers and screens of other options cant give me and which interests me but I cannot justify it as a recommendation to others in the way I would have spoken 5-10 years ago because the reccomendations of yesteryear made sense from a commercial perspective in a world with lesser options it was a choice between "this and that" in order to get a result and an income.
The formula no longer makes sense in a world where you have to evaluate an effort a cost and an expectation for a return but the business has changed . The expectations are different.
Another thing is that having made only a few cameras if they had been bought by people out of curiosity they would have used it a few times and then put it in the attic which is what happened when Polaroid was first introduced.
Trust is important. I trust those who seek my product are comfortable as theirs is an informed choice and I speak the language they understand which is that of artistic pursuit.
Don't get me wrong there are combinations of high quality and convenience which can amount to a very lucrative scenario for a photographer but he is the one who knows.
I am going to make a few more cameras otherwise Im engaged in my photography and the camera subject interests me for only two reasons
a the results it can give
b an interest in design
the rest doesn't matter to me why should I insist it should matter to others?
thank you

 9.
analog is good
analogy?
why the big words when you expect plain English? :)
anyway the reference to English as second language makes your " plain English" expectation sound a lot like this and which I hope to avoid
10.
Ian sorry the discussion has been hijacked;) You are correct it isn't difficult to load holders but the idea is to keep a steady flow of ready to shoot film so the photographer has no distraction or interruption on one side and on his other side the other assistant is labeling the shot film and separating it batching it . an when shooting very very very fast another assistant is loading septum's onto boxes you can shoot very fast this way almost as fast as shooting Pack film polaroid where you just pull it out and go to the next shot.
in this shooting method the photographer just focuses and presses the cable release and spends the rest of the time directing the subject instead of fiddling with the gear.
otherwise the speed of operation of usual hand held LF versus digital makes the clients very nervous .
When shooting personal stuff its best to have a bunch of holders than to have to bother with that .

 11.
a you last post confirms what we could expect would happen if you were told
anything but what you expected to hear if you called the studio haha

 12.
Mr Salomon last NY photo plus expo 2014 I believe I got a card from HP marketing and they said you were now with a different company and I may have seen you from a distance at the show?
Anyway retirement doesn't change ones position except geographically ;)otherwise one would have to be a mercenary in what one says as opinion and which would change after there is no paycheck? so a retired Dodgers coach speaking about baseball to a Yankees coach ? Is anybody going to think retirement will retire the predator? what is " plain English " about that nonsense ;)

 13.
As Mr de Bakker put it well there has been a reiterated insistence for a " plain English" answer which is standoffish and disruptive.
As I informed the service isn't yet instituted and gathering resources for it and the last thing one wants is getting calls with a disruptive and standoffish demand for " plain English" and when a service is not yet offered.
Secondly the business as I informed does not yet handle outside traffic and so my motivation for not answering the question is justified.
When this changes and such business is prepared to provide a service and answers then the information is justified and will be provided and until then it is a distraction which is my duty to avoid. the matter has been addressed in plain English and considered closed.

 14.
Perhaps Bob could use plain English in informing that he is a competitor representing linhof and his posts to suggest unreasonable choices or conveniences which take the position of a competitor are not including the required plain English of disclosing that.
rental houses are not horn tooters and will carry the product when new 55 film is again on the shelves. until then Bob expectations belong to an era past or one shortly in the future but not this moment.
When Large format was very active Lens and Repro rented these cameras a lot but then they too went out of business entirely as the entire market changed as was the case with calumet

Rental places for automobiles don't rent sports cars but standard cars.
In what refers to the disclosure of the actual business in question the plain English answer is
the service has been presented by BOB as not a good choice and im not playing games or getting trapped by his usual strategy of combing the forums to paint competitors efforts as unattractive and then say if it is all that then the catleprod is justified and if you object and feel uneasy then you must be hiding something.
here's the thing; The business has a clientele that has a demand for the service and will announce it to its clients. once they have a locations rental they will be as any other rental house and again it is them who will announce it. Im simply not at liberty .

 15.
The plain English answer is I did not come here to advertise the service but looking for assistants. it is not my place to advertise the service at this point. thank you.

 16.
Rodeo Joe ; we all use a microwave but some may want to use the brick oven for a candle lit diner on occasion. its a matter of preference .
Mr. Salomon; Professionalism is indeed a term which applies to a dispensary.
When large format was a usual necessity and more in demand such places would indeed make such effort based on expectancy of return not that they give a hoot one way or the other. whatever is on the shelf is based on how much it rents. that is conditional care or speculative professionalism.
I don't shoot 4x5 as much but I still love it . If a place with a more demanding audience chooses to offer non conditional care IMHO that is twice as much professionalism or true professionalism if u may.
It is a different type of Professionalism which related to the support respect and encouragement of a photography which isn't mechanical objectivist and purely pragmatic.
a different type of professionalism which focuses on artistic pursuit and the justification of the use of eventual tools which may facilitate that.
It would be derogatory defamatory and insulting to debase such establishment to your interpretation of professionalism as a dispensary and so I will not provide the name.
BTW they will also soon have a locations rentals dept.
Their clients will be notified by the studio directly
thank you.

 17.
He was generous to share his approach to capturing what he described as the decisive moment and which resulted in moments which seem to be induced as if "by grace". This was embraced by the entire editorial world after him and you have the in favor and the against and the neutral.
I am 100% in favor as I feel photography is a term which applies to trying to do images which are as if painting with light and which capture an emotion something from the heart as opposed to a strict objectivism form approached in a technical and mechanical manner which may induce an emotion on a viewer but is void of its own spontaneity.
His approach is by layers.
he first found a stage and then picked up the leica as if a bullfighters cape and waited for the right moment and then he stoked and the relationship between the two works.

Needless to say there will be many chances when things just happen and one has no role of agility or intervention but that is just like the phone ringing when someone else calls . That isn't our call.

 18.
I am looking for high end collectors shops in Asia
does anyone have any suggestions
specializing on rare cameras

 19.
350 cameras with perfectible parallelism 200 of which have a standard non unique custom design and then 75 which have a unique custom design.

 20.
I do believe that when there was a bigger usage of large format a posting may have been spam because it may induce sales but in time we realized the forums were a market for used cameras and we have no involvement and no revenue from that so it isn't that it is unsuccessful but that our market was different and so the intention to sell more was there at first but for a while now we don't expect to sell more from postings and just informative for second hand users as we don't have a website and cannot answer each info request with the lengthy and extensive detail it may require.
the numbers vary and the upgrades between model 1 and seven were mostly internal .
there are only about 75 custom exterior design cameras of unique design
200 cameras with the current standard design
and the rest had the original Polaroid look.

 21.
What I meant when I said the business era has passed I mean it has changed and now we get all of it from direct recommendations from direct users and none from people posting on forums and is a very subjective and elective choice and so I prefer to take a step back and stay with what seems comfortable and justified than have to worry that someone will be induced by a lot of people agreeing with it because he may not. Makes sense? So from where I stand the spam factor may appear as such because it isn't free but then we never ever got sales out of what was posted in the forums and then a camera which we haven't serviced in 10-15 years seems to retain a value despite the fact we have no involvement. It is what it is.

 22.
Actually the business era for this from a monetary aspect has passed and while the cost may not be exactly "free" it isn't what it was back in the day and as you remember people would just make films and people bought them and now that requires crowdfunding so ther may be money involved but its come down to more of a hobbie and a service to existing users.
Now as far as what makes sense some will love a camera because the photos are loveable and some will say any camera can give you the same and some who have experimented will then feel differently.
I don't believe consensus was ever possible but more relevant years ago. now the profession has changed significantly and there is a sort of " its all the same" because digital is indeed inducing this so whatever the case may be if there is a difference it would have to mean something to those who care and don't care that there may be an expense involved versus clearing a SD card.

here is a link to a series of images
There have been approximately 600 non parallelism cameras
and about 350 with the improvement.

 23.
what makes sense is the willingness to communicate and appreciate each other despite our differences. All else tends to lead to fights based on the duality of the 3rd dimensional we live in.

Things only make more sense if more factors are considered than the usual for or against .
I think getting everyone to agree on something would require something which has all sorts of limitations. maybe that can be achieved but is it worth the effort when the first thing everyone would agree that what all can agree on nobody wants haha
