  1. There is incredible depth in that image. It almost looks 3D!

BTW - Mention of the Emmerich railway station brings back lots of memories for me, since I used to live in Amsterdam for a year and my now wife used to live in Erlangen near Nuremberg in Germany. Most of the time I used to drive to Erlangen on the weekends to visit her, but when she came up by train, I often picked her up in Emmerich, so I could see her a bit earlier, and make the train trip a bit shorter for her. They seemed to take forever and a day to switch the locomotive!

Simply wonderful! I don't usually comment on the POW, but this is one of the most memorable photos I have seen in a long time - the story of so many lives compressed into one single image. I would also like to see the color version for comparison, but the b&w is great regardless!

Yesterday I gave my new-to-me 100-400L a workout at the bird feeder.

Bird photography is something I usually don't have the patience for,

since it's just so darn hard to get a good shot of the tiny things

hopping around the place, but the cool thing with this lens is that if

you do get a sharp shot once in a while - it really is SHARP! I think

I am going to love this lens!

  2. This is fantastic. The most beautiful landscape shot I have seen in a while! In my opinion you were there at just the right time. The contrast between the yellow leaves and the blue sky makes this shot. And definetely not too busy - but I love busy shots!
  3. Nice photo of a terrible wine. White Zinfandel is one of very few things you can send me running with. Now, it it was a real Zinfandel; ie a good red not this dreadful rose stuff, that would make a great shot! ;-)

I would also guess that the blurr/panning effect was added in PS, but in my humble opinion it doesn't look photoshopped. At any rate, fantastic picture! I keep on watching the little things race around my backyard - usually with my dog at their heals - and I haven't even attempted a shot yet due to the mind boggling speed.
  4. Very cool image. I didn't think one could x-ray through metal like that. You learn something new every day! Great camera too. I own a SRT-Super and a 303. Gotta dust them off one of these days and take some pictures, but the kids hardly leave me time to use my Drebel these days.

This is a very strong image and indeed has so many just perfectly setup details, like the transmitter tower and the electric conduit between the head and the TV, that I initially assumed it was a set up shot. To capture this as a crab shot demonstrates a great photographic eye, but still has to be a very rare opportunity even for somebody as skilled as Dennis.

Yet, what I really don't like about this shot - is the title, which suggests this scene is all about adoption, and that adoptive parents, not biological parents, are the ones who dump their kids in front of the TV.

I also realize that the title can be interpreted in a different way, namely that the TV is kind of a surrogate parent. I like this interpretation, but from where I stand that's a long way away from an adoptive parent.

  5. Congratulations, Tony, to your third picture of the week! I have admired your work for years, and a visit of your portfolio should be a must for any newcomer to the site. This shot has always been one of my favorites in your portfolio, and when I saw it this week on the front page, I could hardly believe it hadn't been picture of the week before ;-)

Congratulations Marielou! You captured a scene that could have been observed hundreds of years ago or yesterday, and that contains great beauty. Everybody is entitled to their opinion on how this or that detail could have been rendered differently, but no technical nitpicking can take away from the timelessness and aesthetics, and those two aspects, for me, make this a great image.
