1.
Update;
I did not "take the plunge" so to speak. There was oil on the aperture blades and the shutter curtain didn't close all the way at slower speeds leaving a 1/16th or so gap at the bottom of the frame. There was no lens cap and the lens was discolored.
I would have taken a $100 gamble but not at $150. It sure was nice to hold, though.

  2.
I have a chance at a Contax IIa with a 50/2 lens for $150. What should I be looking for? If it needs service, is there anyplace that I can send it or is it too old?

    FG shutter

Hey!
Thanks for the advice. I just fixed my FG by taking off the bottom and moving the lever. Works great, thanks photo.net! You saved a camera.

  4.
I have one of these in the attic (alas, not with the 1.4, the 1.8) and I should try to fix it. Your pictures came out fabulous!

  5.
I have a chance at one of these for $150 that looks to be in great shape w/a 90 warranty so if anything goes wrong, at least for a short time, I'm covered.
Opinions on this lens? Does anyone have it and like/dislike it? I shoot for fun, mostly events, some nature, etc. One thing I have to say is that it's a beast of a lens!

  6.
I flipped up the tab on the F3 and FM and everything works as it should. I also mounted it to my Fuji XE-1 via an adaptor and that worked fine. It's almost as if the ring shifted back just a bit and there is too much tension on the ring and the lens mount.
The lens was inexpensive so I'd like to keep it if only to use on the XE-1 or just keep it at f/8 when I'm using it. The ring does turn, it's just difficult. Perhaps sanding off that millimeter of plastic isn't a crazy idea.....

  7.
I just got a nikkor 24 f/2.8 ais. Glass looks great, focus is buttery smooth, the aperture ring turns fine when it is not on the camera. However, when I mount it, it needs more force than my other ais lenses, is more difficult to remove but most problematical, the aperture ring is very difficult to turn when on the camera. My other ais lenses work fine - no issues with turning at all.

I've tried it on an F3, FM and N90s. No problem with any other lenses on any of the cameras.

It seems if I could shave off 1mm of the aperture ring, it would be fine. (I am not about to do that.)
Any suggestions for a fix?

  9.
Thanks for all of the information!
I took the plunge and bought it. It focuses about as fast as my XE-1 with a fuji kit zoom on it. I also managed to get a 600si which I really like. It is miles above the 5000 and 7000 - it's a few generations newer. I took it out and tried to get photos of the dog ball chasing etc and will be interested in seeing how many are in focus.
It is more fun then the D800 I had. With that, the expectation is perfection. Now if I can go on a photo walk and come back with a few good prints, I am happy.

  10.
HELP!

I just bought one of these from a pawn shop for a steal However, it didn't have any adptor rings. Do you know where I could get one? 52mm would be best. TIA

  11.
Hey film lovers!
I have an opportunity to get a complete film system for very cheap. It is a Minolta Maxxum 7000 with three lenses:
28 -85, 70-210, 100-300 and I have a 50 1.7 from another Maxxum 5000 that doesn't work. (It may be just the battery contacts need to be cleaned. It did work at one time.)
I am comfortable with film photography and have recently picked up a couple (ok, <del>four</del> <del>five</del> six) film cameras for cheap so there is no need here.
Is anyone familiar with the Maxxum system? How did you like it? I was always a Nikon guy. Is there anything I should look for? It seems inexpensive enough that if the body were useless, I could get another one from KEH.
Or I could sell the lenses to my friend who is a Sony guy but he's into is Zeiss primes and is all about image quality.
It even has the boxes. That tells me that someone got it, used it for vacation(s), and put it away. And was fastidious enough to keep the boxes after all these years. I think someone is sick of it hanging around and wants it gone.

  12.
Reading everything! Keep them coming! There is such a wealth of information at photo.net.

  13.
Getting back into shooting black and white and home developing. Backing the day when I did it, we used Tri-X and D-76. I'd like to start with one film and developer and get to "know" it.
Suggestions? I do mostly street photography and natural light portraits. I would like a one shot, liquid developer for ease of use. I'm going to get ten rolls and have a try.

  14.
Take a look at the XE-1. $700 with a great kit lens.

Some images here https://imgur.com/a/RkBWl

  15.
Thanks for all of the advice! what to do, what to do....
