1. Thanks everyone. Empty was easy. When I got there I told everyone to get out Im a photographer with important

work to do and they all left. Actually it was even easier than that. I got there at about 6 am on Sat morning. The

place was empty except for a film crew setting up to film an AT&T commercial. NYPD did not bother me about the

tripod. I guess it was early and empty enough to leave me be.

  2. Thanks everyone especially Alan for the kind words about my blog and website. I did Brooklyn bridge dumbo and grand central

terminal this morning. Only downfall was Brooklyn bridge in the middle when viewed from the park is covered with a tarp and

Washington street near Dumbo all the cobblestone on Washington is being torn up. Lots of construction. I'll post pics when I get home

and please keep the ideas going. Would like to photograph buildings and landmarks.

  3. Hello all. I'm looking for some advice. I am going to NYC this weekend and I would love some ideas of what to shoot. One spot I

would like to shoot is the Brooklyn bridge and the Dumbo area but with all the snow and ice in the river I'll wait until spring. I'm

thinking grand central terminal, top of the rock and maybe the flat iron building. What are your ideas for photographing I would like to

avoid the snow and ice on the ground in my shots so they don't appear to seasonal. I'm also curious about monopod use. I know

tripod use is frowned on pretty much everywhere but how about mobilize in the top of the rock and other places?

  4. Hello all. I need some help I am using a 5d II with a quantum t5d r off camera triggered by the freexwire plugged into th pc. Problem

is I want to use a 580 exii on the hotshot on manual as fill but when I press the shutter only the 580 fires. If I turn off the 580 the t5d

fires but when I turn it on only the 590 fires. Please help I'm stumped. Thanks

  5. Took everyones advice and set up a google adwords account set to auto bid max 5.00 per day. Listed 42 keyword phrases all with a

quality score of 6 or 7 out of 10. Problem is when I google an exact keyword phrase my ad does not show up. I don't understand why

as some of my keyword phrases when entered in google only show 2 or 3 adds. I tried the diagnostic tool but most of my keywords

say Either this keyword has a low search volume and Isn't showing any of your ads or Although your ad is showing it's rank is not

high enough to show on the first page ( I don't get this one as google says 11 adds per page but only 7 are showing) and the last one

is this keyword isnt triggering adds right now. I don't get it I've read the help pages and still cant figure it out. Please help

  6. Thanks everyone. David, why is placing cards in magazines a bad idea and why is a press kit a bad idea. Press kit

only goes to brides that have already contacted me. I like the idea of a press kit better than a brochure. Please tell me

    why this is to aggressive.

  7. Hello again all. Looking for some advertising advice for a new business. I was was wondering what you all think of this idea. I want

to have a bunch of nice 4x6 postcards made up with a nice picture on front and a coupon on the back. I then plan on going to the

local bookstore and placing them in some wedding magazines.

I would also like to start contacting wedding reception venues and wedding related businesses. What should I have in hand when I

visit and what should I offer them. I was thinking of offering some local florists free prints of some of their work in a framed colage

with my business info included. What can I offer a venue. Should I make some cheaper press printed books or perhaps a press kit of

sorts.. Right now I send a press kit to prospective brides. The kit includes a sample contract a cd slide show a business card a few

4x6 poster type postcards and my price list. would something like this work for a venue as well? Again thanks for your help.

  8. Hello all. I am in the process of booking with a bride. She has already booked and signed a contract with a dj. Problem is one of the

services she booked with the dj is for photography during the reception. How would you guys handle that. I don't really want to compete

against another photographer for peoples attention especially during cake cutting father daughter etc, etc. I'm not sure if the dj will be

selling prints or not but I'd obviously like to avoid that as well. She says the main goal of the dj is to put pictures up on a large screen

during the reception (I offer a slideshow on a 27 inch monitor during the reception which is included in her package) My question is what

is the most diplomatic way of addressing this problem with the bride. I do not want to loose the booking. Thanks in advance.

  9. Ok here goes. Just purchased a quantum t5d r. I have no problems using qttl or auto my problem is shooting manual. On the qflash

display I can choose a power setting (easy enough) but I can also chose iso and aperture. Should I ignore these and just choose a power

setting while using a flash meter? In what situation do I use the iso aperture setting while in manual mode? For example let's say I want

to use the t5 as fill and the ambient reading is iso 160 at f8 would I just set the flash iso and aperture to match the camera - 1 stop or so?

If yes then what do I set my power setting to? I'm just not understanding how these settings work together I have been through the

manual and watched will crockets videos on you tube but it's still as clear as mud! I would really like to learn manual mode so I a m not

relying on ttl or auto. Thanks in advance.

  10. Thanks for the responses. I want to offer the iPad as an album alternative in a digital only package. I think that there

may be some intrest in this especially from the techie type couples. I would like to set up the iPad in a way that the

average person would not. Maybe set up an an ebook or document that would have all of the design elements of a

standard album. Like I said earlier I jus need to figure out the logistics of giving the iPad and not losing the data when

they sync it. I understand and appreciate everyones arguments as to why this idea won't work but when it comes down

to it there really is not much risk. If people don't pick that package or that add on then so be it I don't lose money if

they don't pick it however if one or two couples chose the ipad then it's worth it. I like the idea also because as of now

not many people are doing this and it may be seen as new and inovative.

  11. Hello all. Recently I have been reading that some photographers are adding iPad

wedding albums to there packages. I thought this is a really cool idea but I was

wondering how to do this. Question is how do I give an iPad preloaded with there

wedding album? When they go to sync it at home as a new user Won't they lose

everything? There must be away around this as quite a few photographers are adding

    this.

Question 2 are any of you out there using the iPad for this, if so how is it working out?

  12.
Wow. Thank you so much to everyone. This was exactly what I was looking for. Vail your post was awesome...I don't think Ive ever seen someone take more time to critique a set of images.
There wedding is in August outside@12 noon so hopefully I can pick up enough between now and then, but I will have an assistant to help with off camera flashes and reflectors. On the plus side the couple was extremely happy with the images. I have shot a bunch of weddings as a second a few years back so this is really the first time I'm out on my own.
As far as posing and lighting I recently read David Zisers "Captured by the Light" and thought it was by far the best wedding/portrait book I have ever read. I just recently signed up for his Digital Master Class workshop in October. I cant wait for that hopefully I will pick up a lot from that as well.
Again thank you to everyone here for taking the time to help me out I truly appreciate it.

  13.
I personally would save the 14 grand. If you have a good technical understanding of photography you can teach a lot to yourself. If not I would take 1 or 2 basic photography courses to learn the basics. I would also attend a couple of wedding photography seminars. Some of these seminars are taught by the finest studios in the world. I personally like David Ziser. Check out his book Captured by the Light. It is by far the best book about photography I have ever read (I own hundreds of books) Also look into podcasts there are a ton of them out there and you really can learn a lot. Invest in your equipment by pro level stuff that will last and take the punishment.

  14.
I use Smugmug and I love it. You can pretty much do anything with them i totally customized my site the way I want it. Im pretty sure there is a plug in for your needs by Jeffery Friedel. I use his Lightroom plug in and it works great. You can set your own pricing for prints and merchandise as well as offer coupons, credits and client proofing. Smugmug support is really good as well they have regular customer service as well as a huge forum. Check out the forums and ask some questions there Dgrin.com. Cost is 150 per year for a pro account and is well worth it. Check out my site and see what you could do. Keep in mind im not a web designer I did this on my own with a little bit of research and help from the forums. My site is www.bkgphoto.com. Good luck

  15.
Hello all. I just completed my first engagement shoot. I was a nervous wreck and was sweating like crazy but in the end the couple was happy. Please C&C if you have the chance. Please be honest and let me know the good and the bad. I have fairly thick skin. www.bkgphoto.com/Proofs/Heather/12313124_jqqxM#879002305_oG7Gv--Here is the link to the gallery.

  16. Hello everyone. I am going to be photographing a friends family reunion in late June. They have chosen the top of a mountain at a ski resort

for their group shot. The picture will be made at about 445 pm the sun will be coming from the side/rear and the sun sets at about 830 that

time of year. My question is this. How best to light this group, I have 2 580exiis and I also have to photogenic pl2500 1000ws monolights.

There is no electric in the area. The group size is 18. Will the 580's be enough and if not what kind of portable power source would power the

2 monolights. What modifiers work for that large a group if any. I have a couple of 60" umbrellas and 2 umbrella softboxes. I'm afraid that

the modifiers are to big and will just become sails.

Next I'm also looking for some large group posing advice. Is there a book that deals specifically with large groups? I was thinking using a big

12' little giant and posing them down the hill a bit all looking up at me. Any advice would be appreciated.

I will be shooting with 5dii and 24 70 2.8l and maybe my 70 200 2.8l is if needed for smaller groups.

    As always thank you.

  17. Question for all the wedding shooters. I just sold my canon 100 400 l lens and plan on replacing it with a 70 200 lens. My dilema is this... I

can't make up my mind as to which lens to get. I am going back and forth between the canon 70-200 2.8 non is the f4 with is and the yet to

be released sigma 70 200 with image stabilization. How important is the image stabilization and which lens would you choose and why. I

can't afford the canon 70 200 with is right now. If I get the sigma that would also allow me to replace my back up camera currenly it's 30d. I

would upgrade to the 40d. My main camera is a 5dii with a canon 24 70 2.8 L. As always thank you.

  18.
ok I shoot with a 5dmkii as my primary event camera. Currently I have 2 580ex ii's one for on camera one for off camera. And while at the reception i set up a 3rd 1000ws mono as a room light. Question is how much benefit would I see from getting a Qflash to use in place of one of my 580ex that is used off camera. Secondly what would be a cheaper alternative to the Qflash. Thanks.

  19.
Quick question. Currently I have a pro site hosted by smugmug. I love everything about them except one thing. I would like a way for the client to proof images. Smugmug has proofing but whatever the client picks automatically gets sent back to me to retouch and then its off to the lab. The client is billed and the prints are sent directly to the client. I dont want pictures automatically printed. So I am looking to proof a bit differently but I just cant figure out how to integrate it with my website. I would like for the bride and groom to simply be able to check the images they like whether it be for the album, prints or anything else. Once they choose the images they want I just want an email or something that lists the clients preferred pictures and maybe some color/ b&w choices. I know that there are separate proofing sites but I want to somehow have it linked directly to my site with my sites look. I'm sure the way I asked this question is about as clear as mud, but any help would be appreciated.
