Remember that you must be in the "creative zone" (P/TV/AV/M/B) to choose AF mode and AF point.
In the Basic zone the camera chooses AF mode and AF point automatically.
I hope it helps.
Regards Alberto Bocca

Thank you for the links, Bob.
However I think that it could be very useful if some expert (.. like you ..) that uses DPP 4 contributes tips based on his experience, to help us to make the best possible use of this Canon software to fix most common problems or to improve our skills and our workflow.
And I think that even every practical advice based on the experience of photonet members who use DPP 4 could be the wellcome!
Thank you again!
Alberto

I mainly use DPP 4.3.1.1 to work raw images from my cameras (Eos 6d & 7d Mk II) and to extract TIFFs and JPEGs ready to use and/or for further retouch in other photo softwares.
As Canon manual I downloaded is basic and as I didn't find other documents containing tips and "how-tos" reporting experiences of DPP 4 users, I would like to read advices coming from guys who use this Canon software.
For instance, I would like to read advices about the best settings experienced to reduce digital noise for different ISO and different cameras, about highlight recovery tecniques, about settings of the three sliders of unsharp mask for the best sharpening results, and every other experience that can be useful to make the best use of this free software.
I don't know if this is the right place to share this kind of skills and experiences, but I think it would be fine and useful for many guys who use Canon DPP 4.
Thank you all.
Alberto

I'm wondering why DPP or DPP4 don't show, in the picture infos, if Image Stabilizer is On or Off and - for lenses with several positions - in which Mode.
Perhaps it's present in DPP Info and I don't see it?
And if this info is not present in DPP, is there a way to see it or a software (Canon or not Canon) that shows it?
Thank you all for your help.
Alberto

I have bought a used Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L Is Usm (type I).
I'll use it mainly for nature and bird photography and for car race photography.
My questions are about the adjustment of Image Stabilizer, which on this lens has two buttons: IS on/off and Mode 1/2.
No problem with still subjects and One Shot AF: always Is on and Mode 1, except with tripod (Is off). My questions concern pictures of moving subjects, hence using AI Servo AF on my Eos 7d Mark II.
When I shoot without tripod or monopod, I normally keep IS On and select Mode 1, except for panning with slow shutter speeds, when I use Mode 2, accordingly to Canon instructions: do you think it's right? Or you think that also with fast shutter speeds I should use Mode 1 for subjects moving "erratically" and Mode 2 for those moving in a fixed direction?
And using a monopod, always for moving subjects with AI Servo Focus, but with high shutter speeds (not panning), how do you think I should act: IS off? Is On & mode 2? Is On & mode 1?
Thank you all for your help.

Alberto

Alan, I think of buying the lens and using it also for car race pictures and nature photography here in Italy, so I shouldn't consider rental.
Thank you however.
Alberto

Hi all!
The next summer I'll be in South Africa and, for some days, in Kruger Park (game drives, wildlife photo ecc.).
My two bodies are Canon 6d and 7d (model I).
As far as wideangle/normal/medium telephoto I'm O.K. (17-40 f 4 L - 24-105 f 4 L Is - 70-200 f 4 L Is - 200 f 2.8 L II and x1.4 multiplier, all Canon brand).
I'm looking for advices about something on the longer side, that I should find useful for wildlife and also considering that I like to take pictures at car races (as you may see if you visit my small portfolio here in photo.net).
Actually, I'm in doubt between Tamron 150-600 f 5/6.3 Di VC USD (1.100 euros new) and Canon 100-400 f 4.5/5.6 L Is (the old one, about 900-1.100 euros used). The new Canon 100-400 L Is II, by now, seems too expensive (euros 2.200 new).
I'm less tempted by the idea of a fixed Canon focal like 300 f 4 L Is (to use wit Canon x1.4 multiplier) or 400 f 5.6 L (800-1000 euros used each).
I would like to read opinions about ease of use and image quality from friends who have used some of these lenses or, even better, comparisons between them (particularly the two zooms). Also advices on different solutions (in this spending-range) will be welcome.
As far as Tamron 150-600, I have some doubts as I've never used non Canon lenses; additionally, I'm also wondering if auto focus and stabilisation will work properly, with my two bodies, even if max aperture is 6,3.
Thank you all for your help!
Alberto

New scanner
alberto_bocca replied to alberto_bocca's topic in The Digital Darkroom: Process, Technique & Printing

Hello everyone.
Thank you all for the answers.
I scan old slides, film (colour and B&W), only 35 mm format.
I want to digitalize my archive mainly for small size web/prints but occasionally even large prints.
I'm looking for good quality with a price limit of about 300 $/Euros.
Sometimes I still use analogic cameras, so any advice on best films (colour/B&W) for scanning is welcome.
-

Hello everyone.
My old film scanner Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III gave up.
Since I yet scan my old/new slides and films, I'm asking what are film scanners I actually can find and buy, new, in photography shops, without spending too much money.
I expect advices from scanners users, even concerning the quality of results of documents/film scanners like Canoscan 9000 F Mk II or others (Epson, HP...).
Thank you all.

Alberto

Hello everyone!
Reading about the new 7D Mark II, I'm wondering:
1) There is a new battery (LP-E6N): but the camera can use also the LP-E6 of the 7D?
2) There is a new battery grip (BG-E16). Is the BG-E7 of the 7D usable with the 7D Mark II or not?
3) DPP 4 accepts raw files of the 7D Mark II?
Thanks in advance for your answers!
Alberto Bocca
