1.
This qDSLRdashboard app is lot more versatile. Works at least with my D7100 fine. Compatible w/ iOS 5.1 or later.
Link to iTunes store.

 2.
May I add my two cents to your interesting question:
So much depends on your own vision how you see the world, what are your subjects, and what you want your pictures convey.
Another thing before going into gear lens details: as it was mentioned above, buy only two lenses in the beginning.
Tokina 11-16 mm and Nikon 35 mm f/1.8 can form a sound basis, and if you'd want to start with them, maybe Nikon 85 mm f/1.8 or if you shoot more telephoto, maybe 70-200 mm f/2.8. And, another but as sound basis can be the above mentioned Nikon 16-85 mm.
I like those 11-16, 35, 85 on my D7100. But still, particularly for street photography, I find myself using Nikon 16-85 mm most (60% of photos). The rest 40% are spread evenly between 35 mm, 50 mm and 85 mm f/1.8, and 55-300 mm.
My pictures from past year are in this blog and background information on my gear and everyday choises is in this entry. I bought D7100 only in September, and pictures before that are taken with D7000.
-
(Nice to be back to photo.net after some years' pause. I think last time I was contributing here as a Canon user.)
