  1. Could it be the VR on one of the lenses? VR when set to "on" with camera off, produces a slight click or rattle when moving the lens and camera. I set my VR to "off" unless I use it.
  2. Greetings, as per the title, I am looking for some reviews for the Fringer Nikon F to FUJIFILM GFX Lens Adapter. I can find lots on Canon lens use with the Fringer on the GFX but not much with Nikon F mount lenses. Any ideas for a good review? Thanks, Kevin
  3. University of British Columbia endowment lands, from my kitchen window. BIF ... Iona Beach bird sanctuary Quiraing, Isle of Skye BNIF. Lost Lagoon, Vancouver Introvert's delight
  4. Phew ... I had no idea how much data was resident in a NEF file. Just digging through all the data and interesting to see EXIF Tool also captures the regular camera menu settings as well as things like this: Some reading is going to be needed but I guess it captures all of the XYZ positions of the camera as I can deduct on first blush. And finally a program that surfaces all the GPS data I capture on the DI-GPS!!
  5. I tried this a few times now and it still does not give me the same result as doing it manually, which is to say, I shoot a step wedge on a tripod and immediately review the result on a 65 inch 4K TV, adjust the AF Fine Tune manually by changing the + or - values and try again. Still get better results that way. But it does take a lot longer... I tether shoot through Capture One, which is my editing software.
  6. Well I have only checked a few setting comparisons but have not had the chance to do a thorough side by side. In all of this, I did set up a few lenses with the D850 built-in AF fine-tune and that seems quite off from what I had from memory, both in numbers and looking at the output. Since I have a few f/1.4 manual lenses, my AF fine-tune process incorporates those as well (you can use the AF settings to ensure the lens is sharp right at the edge of the green dot) so it's been a fair bit of work. But no pre and post comparisons also because the subjects are obviously not the same.
  7. Hi @CvhKaar you are correct. It seemed a bit odd that this data would not be part of the EXIF. I tried ExifPro and Irfanview but neither had the info. I installed Nikon's software NX Studio and it did show it there! Could have saved me a lot of time 🙂 Cheers, Kevin
  8. Sandy, unless there is a process I'm unaware of, the "save settings" process does not include the AF Fine-tune settings, sadly.
  9. Well, after a day and a half of fine-tuning lenses, I dare say things are back to normal. This is a shot with the 300 VRII and the D850. Only needed -3 to get this good at f/2.8 @ 100ISO and 1/500s. Perspective shot through the window with the phone.
  10. Weirdly enough, as I am in the process right now of fine tuning the lenses, one side of the display is 100% ok again.
  11. The values disappeared when I reset the camera via the menu (after first backing up through the same menu). Sadly, most if not all of the settings were restored, the AF fine-tune values are not part of that. It does restore the list of non-CPU lenses, oddly enough, so you'd expect it to do the AF values as well. It even says in the manual it doesn't back these up 🙂 RTFM I guess before doing stuff like this. I was trying to chase (although with little hope of success) the fact that some of the horizontal pieces of the lettering inside the viewfinder don't light up anymore. Not very many reports on this on the web and one guy in Germany sent his D850 to get it fixed for 160 Euro. It doesn't impact the workings of the camera. I guess a pressed-in LED board has come a bit loose. I was hoping it be power/battery related but no.
  12. I have 4 or so manual ais lenses too. Those take the longest but I figured out a way to use the green dot for fine tune for those as well. The auto fine tune never worked well for me. I do it with a 75 inch OLED TV and shoot tethered to a step wedge, compare, adjust, compare... It works well.
  13. Oof.. having helped a friend dial in an FI conversion on an old BMW 2002, I feel your pain. That took all summer to work properly... My problems are none-existent in comparison. But after today .... Excel sheet.
  14. I guess I should have looked it up. It doesn't. FMR ... A day's work ahead. Definitely will make a spreadsheet for the D850 and the Df now... https://onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/d850/en/18_menu_guide_06_33.html
  15. I have (had) about 13 lenses with AF-Fine tune settings in my D850. I wanted to reset the camera to chase a bug and saved the values (Save/load settings) yesterday. Reset the camera, took the battery out and let it sit for 24H. Didn't fix the issue so I reloaded the settings. All the settings came back, except the AF-Fine tune values. Am I totally skunked? Am I missing something else? A day's work if I can't recover it somehow ... sigh. Any ideas appreciated.
  16. How interesting to read this .... I have a Df and a D850. Previously, I had a D700 and I much prefer the output of the Df over the D850. Even my D700 pics look better than the D850. I've ranted on this forum about this a few times but never got any traction with it. Glad I am not the only one out there with this experience.
  17. I've spent days and days trying to replicate the Df look in LR and C1. A friend of mine who is a pro photographer graciously spent a day on it too in PS. We both agreed we didn't get the same result as the Df had. Some of the outputs were much better with a lot of work, but nothing looked as nice. The only difference we found was to re shoot the subjects in a lower res (Medium RAW) mode on the D850, then we were able to get a little closer. The D700, D4, Df and a few other Nikons have different sensor than the D850 (Sony sensor) and I am starting to wonder now why I never liked the output from any of the Sony cameras I tested a few years ago.
  18. I have a D850 and a Df. I prefer the Df in nearly all cases. For some reason, the D850 just doesn't produce better pics. I took the Df on a month long vacation to Nepal and LOVED the pics that came out of it, all with the 24-70 f/2.8 Nikkor. Last May/June we went to Scotland for 4 weeks and I took the D850. The shots are ok, not great (24-70 and 14-24 Nikkors). They are sharp, well-lit, lots of detail. They just don't look right ... The only time the D850 really shines over the Df is when I use the 300 f/2.8 VRII and the 28 f/1.4 Nikkor. Then the D850 "wins" but for everything else the pics from the Df are my preference. I used to have a D700 and I feel I liked that better too than the D850, looking back at some of the old pics. I've discussed this here and in-depth with photographers who reviewed side-by-side shots of the same with both cameras and they too can't make sense of way the Df is better. I've done a factory reset and all ... no difference.
  19. Yeah I got super lucky that day. In general, I find that borders are usually quite simple to cross and rarely does anyone go through your stuff. This is speaking from personal experience, riding a motorcycle through North and South America, Asia, Middle East, India, Pakistan, 45 countries in all, some multiple times,... On only one occasion did I have to open a side case to let them look at stuff, maybe 6 inches down before they got bored. Not that there was anything to find.
  20. The one time anyone took a close look at my power bank was transiting Pudong (Shanghai) airport. But you never know ... I arrived at Lima airport a few years ago with a big knife in my jeans (totally forgot) and just as I was about to be wanded down, I let the security guy know. He missed wanding my back pocket and whisked me through with a knowing smile.
  21. I have a Nitecore after market charger that seems to work better than the Nikon ones. I use battery banks all the time to do exactly this. 10,000 MaH is all you will get through an airport in China but without hassle. Anker makes some of the best ones as well as PD chargers that are very flat and pack away small.
  22. One more vote for the Nikon Df. I use it more than my D850 and I've simply never been able to equate the optical quality and pleasure of the finished result from the D850 to the Df. The Df takes far better looking pictures, no matter what I do in CaptureOne 1 or whatever anyone else can do with both NEF files. This is a file 1/10th the size of the original. ISO250, 1/160s, f/1.4. Lens is a Zeiss Milvus 50 mm 1.4. Handheld and of course manual focus. The only time I use the D850 now is on the 300mm f/2.8 VRII basically.
  23. I took six shots, large, medium and small RAW. No sharpening or other adjustments, pumped straight out using Capture One. First lens was a Zeiss Milvus f1.4 50mm. Second was a AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G 85mm. I moved the camera back a bit to get roughly the same size of picture. Manual focus for both. Settings ISO64, 1/40s f/5 and a 2 second delay on the shutter. I'm happy to see the 85 holds up quite well to the 50. I think what I am concluding from this is that the 85 at large provides too much detail in the face and I certainly prefer the medium here. Even the small would be perfectly suitable for a portrait. The 50 does not seem as harsh to me at large and the difference between large and medium is perceptually less than the difference between the 85 large and 85 medium. What do you all think?
