  1. <p>Another non-pet, although I do feel a little proprietorial when these delightful creatures come into the garden, as this one did a couple of days ago. <em>Aeshna cyanea</em>, the Southern Hawker.</p><div></div>
  2. <p>Green Tiger Beetle (<em>Cicindela campestris</em>) seen in the New Forest (actually 'new' in the 11th century when it was set aside as a royal hunting forest) last week. With its enamel-like body and shiny copper legs and antennae this must be one of the most attractive beetles in the UK.</p><div></div>
  3. <p>Male Broad-bodied Chaser (<em>Libellula depressa</em>). Females are yellow.</p><div></div>
  4. <p>This splendid creature is only about 8mm long. It's a Ruby-tailed wasp, one of several very similar species of kleptoparasitic wasp. They're also known as Cuckoo wasps, as they lay their eggs inside the nests of other (solitary) wasp species. The vibrantly coloured cuticle acts as armour, enabling them to roll into a ball if detected. It can also fool the host species by releasing chemicals which mimic its scent profile.</p><div></div>

  7. <p>One of the thousands of Puffins on Skomer, Pembrokeshire:</p><div></div>
  8. <p>No photogenic snow and ice here, just cold and wet. Here's a reminder of basking in the sun:</p><div></div>
  9. What tidy desks you all have!<div></div>

  11. <p>Nature isn't all outdoors. This is a female <em>Amaurobius similis</em>, about 8 or 9 mm long, who's using a corner of the shower-room as a nursery. She laid her eggs in this cocoon last week and will stand guard until the spiderlings hatch. <em>Amaurobious</em> is a matriphagous spider, so she will be the spiderlings' first meal.</p><div></div>
