I do like this picture, probably because I have long been attracted to macro photography. In fact I am not surprised to see that it was a Nikon digital camera because they seem to have by far the best macro capabilities of the current crop of consumer level digital camera's.
On the comments or one in specific, Tris stated "Bottom line remains: how long would a photo such as this likely reside on someone's wall?" Being a total amatuer photographer I am somewhat puzzled by this statement as a critique of a photo. I have loved a great many photos that I would never consider hanging on my wall. That in fact would probably not be at home on many peoples walls so does that mean that they are not good photography. The first photo that comes to my mind is the Vietnam photo of the naked child running from the destruction of her village. I understand that many people find this to be a powerful and dramatic photo but I doubt many would want it on their wall.
So is it possible that photography can have other purposes and still be valid. This photo to me is much like a painting. And though I probably wouldn't want it on my wall I still think it is beautiful and creative and worthy of the time to capture it and worthy of the time that I spent looking at it and enjoying it.

I know that many people hate portraits of other peoples pets. I am
looking for a way to take a picture that is more than just that that
actually has a little more depth to it. Let me know what you think
of this one and what you would need to see in a portrait to consider
it worthy of more than casual attention.
Thanks.

I know everyone does flowers. And many do flowers and bees. I am
happy with the light and dark balance but I am just an amateur so I
need others opinions.

I couldn't figure out either how these worked until I realized that I was pairing up the wrong tracks. Now I see it looking like one of the ribbons you are asked to wear for the current cause celeb. I like the picture. Though it isn't your fault I think I would have liked it better if there were some clouds to give the sky some depth. It is a pretty flat grey as it stands. But great work on seeing the interesting pattern in the first place. I don't know that I would see that yet. I hope to some day but it is hard.

I like this picture a lot. It reminds me of being young and dreaming. I always looked to the sky no matter what I was dreaming of.

I am trying to make the transition from "Taking Pictures" to
photograpy. I'm looking for any critiques so I can check my progress
and see where I can get better.

I didn't really notice where she was directing her comments (I do see that she is upset and shouting at someone) but what distracts me now that I have read the comments and looked at the photo more closely is that she is shouting not at that cop but at apparently another one out of the frame. I agree that this is a fantastic moment captured and could easily be on the cover of most major newspapers in the country. It tells a very powerful story and only when you stop to be very critical do you begin to see that maybe there is more of a story than the photo contains.

After checking your portfolio and seeing the other photos you have taken of this spot I definitely think this angle works best. I liked the photo immediately because of the colors. It looks very timeless. I like that it could have been taken at anytime present or past and might have looked just the same.

I totally agree that Kiet deserves photo of the week. His portfolio is amazing but I am having a hard time understanding how this is the best of the photos in the portfolio. I guess this is why I am just an novice. I do like the colors and the balance of bright and dark.

I love the solitude of this picture. It is lonely but I would love to be there for some reason.

That is what I am trying to learn to see. Congratulations on capturing such a beautiful moment in time.

Thank you for the note on the size. I realized my mistake after uploading them the first time but didn't think I could fix it without deleting and re-creating. Luckily your notes made me reexamine things and I found how to update them to a smaller size.

I am using a digital camera to try and help myself learn to take
better photos. I wouldn't call myself a photographer but instead I
would say that I take pictures. I am trying to see things in a
photographic way instead of just snapping a way and wonder if I am
making any progress. Let me know what you think. Anything
constructive and helpful is always appreicated. It's hard to be a
novice because I see so many things on these pages that intimidate me.
Thanks, Gary.

I have long tried to get shots of my cat during a spirited play session. Unfortunately once he sees me on the floor with a camera he decides I am much more interesting than his toy and begins to play with me. Congratulations on catching the moment.
Besides I love the picture because he looks so much like my cat.
