1.
I recently purchased a used Jobo TBE-2 water tempering box (with graduated cylinders and bottles for chemistry). Filling it with water is easy, but pouring it out is a hassle and I'd prefer to not have to repeat both steps each time I want to process a single roll of film or two (usually every weekend).

If anyone here owns one, can you tell me if its okay to leave the water in it? Or will I risk damage to the components of the heat pipe or thermometer? It did not come with an instruction manual.

Thanks

 2.
Probably a stupid question, but I've loaded my Nikon F-100 with a roll of the soon-to-be-rare Fuji Velvia 50, with the specific intention of capturing a beautiful sunset last afternoon.

I missed it.

I want to rewind the film back into the cartridge and save it - so that I can practice a few things with some B&W film (still relatively new to film and the F100). I understand that the film lead will be sucked back into the cartridge, but I figure that I can get it back with a film lead retriever that I have.

Pending that the lead retrieval goes smoothly, is it safe to assume that the first few frames that were extracted from the cartridge are still usable?

Thanks

 3.
Thanks a ton for all of the advice folks. I've processed three rolls thus far and like the results. All three were 1+1 dilution. I just processed one roll with straight D-76, to see what difference it might make - if any.

I wish I had diluted the wetting agent a little further, as a couple of you had recommended. That stuff really left its mark on the first roll. Live and learn.

Thanks again

 4.
I'm generally new to B&W film photography, having only processed about a half dozen rolls and in Ilford chemistry.
My ilford chemistry expired on me, so I picked up a bag of D-76 (1 gallon), Kodak Indicator Stop Bath, Kodafix Solution and Kodak Photo-Flo 200 Solution. I've already mixed the D-76, and i'd like to confirm the dilutions of all the chemicals before I process a role:
This will be processed in a stainless steel, single reel tank (about 290ml capacity).

D-76 (instructions say 1:1 dilution):
-145ml Stock Solution
-145ml Water

Kodak Indicator Stop Bath
Kodak's website says to dilute 1 part concentrate with 63 parts water.
I interpreted this as 290/(1+63)
-5ml Stop Bath
-285ml Water

Kodafix Solution
Kodak's website says 1 part concentrate to 3 parts water.
-75ml Kodafix
-215ml water

Kodak Photo-Flo 200
-A Drop???

Thanks for your help,
5.
Thanks guys.
I've had a difficult time maintaining temps using my sink so I think that the water bath makes the most sense and will be the most convenient. I knew that they existed - I just didn't realize they could be had for that little.
As far as Walmart is concerned; i'm nowhere near one (downtown Chicago) and there are only two places nearby that will process themselves; a GammaImaging and CentralCamera Co. Both are too expensive for my taste. Besides, processing my own is half of the reason I got into film. :)

 6.
Thanks Craig, that definitely puts my mind at ease. Along with a Paterson development tank, I also purchased a film leader "retriever" to pull the leader out for this exact reason. But if perfection isn't required here, then i'll probably just do it all in the dark. Excellent point regarding the scratching as well.
I've purchased 5 rolls of expired film off of ebay to practice with.
Thanks

 7.
I'm completely new to film developing -- I haven't even purchased my first development tank. My question is in regards to the process of removing the film leader and loading the film onto the reel.
If I have to cut the leader off in complete darkness, I can guarantee you that I'm going to cut unevenly and probably through a sprocket 9 times out of 10.
Why do I have to remove the leader in complete darkness if the leader and (probably) the first couple of frames have already been exposed to light when I initially loaded the film into my camera?
Also, can't I load the film directly from the cartridge onto the reel (in complete darkness, of course), without removing the film from the cartridge beforehand? I understand that the last frame will be attached to some column within the cartridge, but can't that just be snipped off when the time comes?
Thanks

 8.
I have the gimbal head, lens and flash (580EX II), but no flash bracket or Better Beamer yet (the bracket is the JoBu FB-TM2, seen below). It looks like the flash will stand directly above the lens collar.

Unfortunately, I can't find any dimensions for the BB to guesstimate wether or not it will extend beyond the lens (w/hood extended). Thanks

 9.
Just a shot in the dark, but has anyone had any experience using a better beamer with the Canon 400mm f/5.6 (on a flash bracket, mounted at the lens collar - a la on a gimbal head)?

I'm concerned about the better beamer extending beyond the length of the lens and causing lens flare. I'm assuming it will without a lens hood, but with the lens hood fully extended will the BB still extend beyond the length of the lens?

Thanks

 10.
Marc,
I have a Calumet just a couple of miles away and one in the suburbs as well (I think). Unfortunately, their inventory (both online and in-store) is rather limited at the moment. But they have potential, and it's good to see some dedicated camera stores pop up again, after seeing places like Best Buy wipe a lot of the little guys off of the map.

 11.
Thanks Helen. As I said in a prior post, I didn't realize that they were all jewish holidays and I hope no one took offense to the thread. I'm pretty ignorant to all religious holidays.
I also didn't realize that both Adorama and B &H were both mostly brick & mortar. Considering their popularity and presumably high volume of orders, I had assumed that they were both just virtual or "online superstores" (all servers and conveyor belts). That being said: with the volume of orders you guys handle, you deserve all the time off that you can get.
Thanks

 12.
Barry, you just made me realize that they all must have been jewish holidays. If that's the case, than I am indeed, and unintentionally, being insensitive and I apologize if I have offended you or others here that share the same religion. I don't know the dates of jewish holidays (or christian, buddhist, islamic, etc., aside from Christmas for obvious reasons). I am an atheist, and follow no religious schedule.

Have a good one.

 13.
try not to take it so personally guys. What I'm looking for aren't exactly staples of my (or many other people's) camera gear. They're for a particular type of photography; one I obviously don't practice often. The trip was scheduled last minute, and the opportunity presented itself. In a perfect world, I would have ordered this stuff years ago but we all know that's never the case.
How many times have you dropped $300-$400 dollars on stuff that you may or may not need 2yrs down the road? In this context, don't you think that there's a thin line between preparation and careless spending? Just saying.
I love B & H and Adorama. It's just that; aside from financial institutions, it's pretty rare to see businesses shut down for so long and so often. If they can do it without going bankrupt, more power to them.

 14.
Zach, I'm just a couple of blocks from Central so I had planned to stop by in a couple of hours, but I doubt they'll have items such as the precision focus screen w/grid or the flash bracket. I'll be getting the better beamer from Helix and the flash sync cable and focus screen from Calumet.
I'm likely out of luck with the JoBu top-mount flash bracket, though I'm hoping that one of these three camera shops might have an alternative that will work with my gimbal. We'll see.
thanks all for your help.

 15.
B & H & Adorama seemed to be closed more often than they're open (both are closed until the 27th). Calumet is always hit or miss with accessories - mostly miss. Does anyone know of a reliable superstore that can overnight most, if not all of the following, to me by Friday?

Canon Eg-D Precision Focusing screen with Grid

Canon OC-E3 Off-Camera shoe chord 3

Visual Echoes FX3 "Better Beamer" flash extender for the Canon 580EX

JoBu Designs FB-TM2 top mount flash bracket with quick release

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for asking.
Thanks

 16.
oof, didn't think the eye-fi would work with my camera (CF card), but just noticed the SD --> CF card adapter. With a pocket router (mi-fi, Clear iSpot, et al), I could transfer the images to the iPad without taking it out of my bag. Security problem solved :) j/k

I'll probably purchase the low-capacity iPad some time down the road for fun on the road, but not for the job.

 17.
By "on the job" I mean after the event has concluded, of course. And while backing up the images is less important to me if I am shooting close to home; traveling is where it becomes more worrisome (unfortunately, we do a lot of traveling). It would just be nice to know that I have the images secured on multiple devices, should the unthinkable happen.

That being said, everyone brought up a great point regarding the security of the iPad. Surprisingly, this is usually the first thing I think about when considering a new portable electronic. Too much Jobs/Apple kool-aid I guess. My boss is pushed me towards the Nexto DI; something she uses. In comparison it's inexpensive, fast and has much more storage capacity. It has no preview screen and its only purpose is to make copies of the media -- all I need.

thanks for your input
