1.
Really no need to buy a new superzoom. Your 24-85 + 70-300 will fill the bill. IMO the 28-300 will not add any value to your project.

 2.
It's fun. Tried it on my D800. It worked with Windows 7 but did not work on my Samsung tablet. I was told they were developing a solution - perhaps there is one by now. Nonetheless I returned it because (1) It did not work with my tablet and (2) There was a significant time lag between clicking and capture. I understood it to be a work in progress. I could not think of a valid way to use it for my purposes.

 4.

so I'm not sure where the plane of focus is?

The lens is fine. BreezeBrowser indicates the plane of focus on the child's body instead of the eyes or face. When depth of field is shallow, accurate focussing becomes critical. If one cannot be sure, perhaps it's safer to shoot at f/5.6 or more, along with a fast-enough shutter speed. For group photos with multiple layers of people, it's best to shoot at least from f/8. Please select a beautiful uncluttered background for the group.

 5.
Patrick, sorry to hear about the equipment mishaps. Good thing you were able to save some precious shots.
I love London. Ian of "Photo Walks of London" took me to a number of places this morning and I went back in the evening for night shots at the Westminster Abbey area. I feel London is a good combination of NYC and Boston.

 6. Thanks Frank. I am writing from my hotel in London - having arrived today. As you mentioned, it's cooler than back home in New England. Thanks for your clothing advice. Planning to go to a "Photo Walks of London" event tomorrow.
