1.
I was recently given a Manfrotto 503 with carbon fiber legs without a plate, I haven't had a chance to use it. I don't know much about tripods and I find this piece of gear really sturdy and rugged at the cost of being really heavy. I'm wondering if I should sell or trade this head away for a ball head of some sort (if I can attach one to these legs), or just get a 35mm plate for it.

I intend to use this tripod mainly for surf photography with a Canon 40d with a 70-200 F/4 L (no is) so whatever I buy must be light enough to scale some pretty steep cliffs. My budget is pretty slim right now (like $100) because I just purchased the camera and lens. I will definitely be selling/trading the 503 head to fund the purchase of a new head if that is the way to go.

What do you folks recommend?

 2.
I just opened up my factory refurbished canon 40d, set the time and date and it all works perfectly. EXCEPT when I turn it off and back on, it prompts me for the time and date as if I didn't set it. Is this something simple I'm over looking or could this be a defective unit?

 3.
I'm trying to decide between these two lenses, which are both in my budget. I'll be using a 40d and a monopod *most of the time*. Lighting conditions will range from full sunlight, front lit, back lit, overcast and cloudy. Not so much low light indoor stuff.

The only telephoto zoom I've used is an old Carl Zeiss 80-200 f4 manual focus with AF adapter, which I find to be a little short. I'm not sure if I should take the extra reach and IS of the 70-300 over the superior image quality, and speed of the 70-200 f4 L at the long end. I imagine a 1.4x teleconverter will be do-able sometime in the future.
