    Untitled

Almost "perfect," but viewed in large mode, I still do not see any highlights in the model's eyes. I am guessing that the lighting was done with a fresnel spot, not a flash? Anyway, I really think the image needs the highlights in the eyes.

And yes, if you've seen Vermeer's paintings in-person, and I agree that this photo is an excellent example of this style, there are always clearly visible white highlights in the eyes. Even more, some Vermeer portraits show reflections in the eye highlights.

Without the eye highlights, this otherwise outstanding portrait loses some of it's dynamism.

I really like this shot. Perfect for 6x6 and B&W. The only thing I might change (and this is picky) is maybe to lower the horizon in the frame so there is less foreground. Beautiful light!

As I commented earlier, and firmly believe, that the image falls apart without the man in the left foreground. The blur adds to the unposed, active, and realistic tone of this image.

I too agree that too much time is spent on photo.net arguing over focus/in focus/out of focus issues. If the whole image was perfectly in-focus, I would not like this nearly as much. The way it is now I feel much more like I'm *in* the room rather than just *viewing* the room.

  1. Nice self portrait. I have to admit, the first time I looked at this I really thought the model (you) were a plastic store window type, and not real? Maybe it's the makeup and eye liner, and the dead-ahead gaze.

Anyway, you look good. My only comment is that you should re-take the picture with the Rolleiflex rather than the Canon.

I think this is an excellent photo, especially the timing of the shot. For me, if the person the left is not in the immediate foreground, the image is not nearly so effective. I would like to know more about the context of the shot - where, who, etc.

    Excellent choice for POW.

Excellent closeup portrait. If the blue eyes were not enhanced with extra blue, it's even more stunning. Nice to see pet portrait showing "character" of animal -- this is a very dignified portrait that shows respect.
  2. People are not appreciating your portfolio, which is outstanding. I can't believe the low ratings that are being given - there's not one photo in here that is less than excellent.

I'm glad to have seen your work -- please post more. I love your style and approach and the longer shutter speeds.

I like the colors and the tremendous depth made possible by the layered hills and light in the distance. I think the image could have been very dramatic if it would have been possible to throw some light on this side of the arch with a strong strobe. Granted, not common for high f-stop landscapes, but I feel that the foreground of these types of images needs more attention than the background. Congrats on POW!

OK, this is my very first use of real studio lighting (in my living

room no less). Of course I made a load of mistakes, but it was all

about learning. Here's a first shot from my Rolleiflex. Comments and

    advice appreciated.

This image is literally dark, but not what I would expect for dark and moody. How about dark and moody emotions?

Anyway, I would rather see this image with more midtones, but the light range may be too large to effectivly capture without blowing the highlights or muddying the darker tones.

I took this last year at the beach in the early morning. I like the

way it turned out (with some d&b). Is this too abstract to have any

meaning? Can you tell it's sand?

Such negative response to an excellent photo! Michael, I think your whole portfolio is excellent as well -- shows a unique, creative style.

One of the things I love about this photo is that it *does not* show the usual infrared look, which frankly is way overdone. Your image shows another, more interesting look to infrared, and the high grain really works perfectly for this subject matter.

The fact that many people here think this image was created with Photoshop shows how little they know about basic film techniques. Congrats on a well-deserved POW.
