I agree with Larry... 1 &3... and start a new hobby :)... maybe more 1 than 3...

It would just be awesome if someone would come up with a digital back for my recently-ordered (and still waiting to be delivered) Leica R4S, and an updated (cheaper :D) digital back for the R8... lol... it doesn't hurt to dream... *sigh*...
BTW, my local Target processes a roll of C41 for 90 cents. They scan it as well - but I end up re-scanning it at home...

Wal-Mart only sends out the film... :( not convenient.

The very reason I didn't want to modify the lens itself is because my primary body is an R8, I just wanted a second body to have the 50 'lux on it, while I keep the 80-200 f/4 on the R8 (for balancing, and since it's a ROM lens).
Stephen,
That's what I was asking... does anyone know of any places/people that can change the mount on the Nikon? Is it that expensive? Should I just look into getting an R4 or something?
Tõnu,
Yes I've seen that. 'Cept it doesn't really say whom I can turn to to have the mount changed.

Thanks for all your responses.

  5.
Hi,
I have a Summilux-R 50 (e55) 3-cam lens that I would like to put on a Nikon F3, but do not want to alter the the lens itself.
Is it possible to just change the mount on the Nikon F3? It's just lying around lately since I've been getting rid of my Nikon equipment in favor or the R-system...
All the searches keep leading to leitax - converting the lens... but I want to convert/replace the mount on the Nikon.
Thanks,
David.

  6.
Hi all,
Just a week ago I was putting filters on my 50 Summilux-R (e55, 3-cam), and when I was taking one of the filters off, the front part of the lens (not the glass, though) started rotating along with the filter!
The lens works well without any issues (I have taken pics with it this weekend), and the glass does not move, but the front part of the lens - where you screw on the filters and the part with the hood - rotates freely.
I have tried to screw it 'back' so it wouldn't move - but to no avail... it just keeps rotating both ways :(.
Any suggestions as to the problem/solution? IF I will end up sending it for repairs - which seems highly likely - what are the approximate costs I can anticipate?
Thanks everyone,
Dave.

  7.
Alex,
Thanks for all the advice. I will be going in as an exchange student, so hopefully they'll be more lenient on me? And I will be staying in the dorms (for foreign students, I believe), so I guess shipping through a hotel would not work... I guess I will have to find other ways to take care of the film...
By "never offer anyone a bribe" - are you talking about giving money to people after having taken pictures of them? Will watch "Casablanca" :P.
Scott,
I really really hope you're right :).

  8. Alex,

thanks for your response and advice! I definitely find that smiling can go a long way anywhere :).

Leaving my camera with anyone, even with the proper paperwork anywhere is a big no-no for me, lol (as I guess it is for

    any photographer).

Is it legal (according to the 'official' Egyptian law) for them to require ask for payment for the second camera?

I understand this is normal there, and the lower-ranking officers usually pay a certain percentage of this bribe to their

officers... How much would they ask if I took my Leica and another P&S/M43 camera?

Is it possible to 'dissuade' them? Lol... Or is it just better to pay the bribe?

Oh, and is shipping film out of Cairo a safe/good idea?

    Thanks,

    Dave.

  9.
Allen,
thanks for the clothing tips btw... Cause I usually wear jeans, shorts and t-shirts :D... "fashion" is definitely different outside of the US... this will be something I'll have to keep in mind.
Can anyone comment on shipping film to the US from Egypt? I'm sure shipping from Europe won't be an issue, but I'm really concerned for the well-being of film when shipped from Egypt... or can anyone recommend any places in Cairo to get the film developed?

  10.
Thanks for all the comments.
I am aware of the Middle East - Israel visa problems :D... I've been to Israel twice before, once through Frankfurt (they had everyone sit down in the plane for like 30 minutes so they could scan it through binoculars before they even opened the doors...), and once through the land border between Jordan and Israel... When I was flying out of Tel Aviv to Frankfurt, they stopped me, searched me, took me to a separate room to search me/ask questions, and then escorted me personally to the gate... lol... interesting experience :P... I was fortunate that I had recently been issued a new passport (cause the old one expired) and it didn't have as many stamps... (some including Afghanistan, the UAE, Kuwait and other central and southeastern asian countries).
The reason I'm asking these questions, is because I'll be traveling alone (i.e. not with family), so I'll have more freedom to "pursue photography".
Yesterday my Leica f/4 80-200 arrived. It's much smaller than I expected (I have a Nikon f/2.8 80-200, which is a monster compared to the Leica).
I'm waiting for the Nikon 80-200 to sell now, so I can put the money towards a small digital camera...
Scott,
the tripod that broke, I bought several years ago for $20 in Jordan, when I had no idea I'd ever get my hands on a Leica. I only recently bought the Leica, and haven't had the need for a tripod until now. I'm still contemplating whether a tripod is worth bringing along on this trip...

  11.
Thank you all for your responses.
Most of the time I will be accompanied by friends, fellow students, and/or guides, so hopefully that will help :).
Are there any suggestions you could make on the tripod? I was hoping to pay not more than $300...
I'm considering getting the LX3, but then there are the M 4/3 cameras... grrr... I haven't been able to check out the Canon P&S yet...

  12.
So it looks like I'll be doing quite a lot of traveling this year... so I needed some advice.
I will be doing study abroad programs this year, and understand that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel and experience the cultures, so I want to be ready to take memorable pictures while I'm at it...
I have a Leica R8, 24 f/2.8, 50 f/1.4, and planning on buying a f/4 80-200 this week; also I will need to get UV/protection filters for them, and I am considering Polarizer filters; I also have a Metz 54, and need to get a tripod (previous one broke)...
I am also considering which digital camera to buy - I need a compact one, but also one that has very good IQ.
I will be spending 2 weeks in Istanbul, followed by 2 months in London (and maybe a week in touring Europe);
then I will be going straight to Cairo for 2 months, then traveling (possibly) to Jordan, Syria, Israel (and I really hope Morocco)...
Afterwards I might go to Jerusalem to study for a semester...
So what would you recommend in terms of ethics and safety in those areas? Are the people generally ok if they are being photographed? I heard in popular tourist areas the locals ask for money...
What digital compact would be a 'worthy' companion in this journey?
Are there places in the above-mentioned countries that I can get my film developed? Or should I hold on to it until I come back to the US?
Are the locals in the Middle Eastern countries generally familiar with the Leica brand, or should I put tape over the Leica logo?
What tripod would you recommend - considering all the travel, but also taking into account the weight (and value) of the camera... :)
I'm really really excited about this trip, and want to be well-prepared equipment-wise... I understand I am asking quite a lot of questions :P...
Thanks in advance,
Dave :).

  13.
Hi all,
Just had a question regarding which filters I could use for my Leica R lenses...
I have a 24 f/2.8, a 50 f/1.4 (e55), and am planning on buying the f/4 80-200 (which, I believe uses the 60mm thread)...
I am limited to only Leica filters, or I can use brands like B+W? Leica filters are extremely expensive, but I'd definitely prefer to spend some extra $$ for the well-being of my lenses :)...
I was interested mainly/primarily in UV filters - since I'll be traveling this upcoming year...
Thanks,
Dave.

  14.
Florian, I am also going to be in Istanbul, but in about 3 months; I also have the D90, 18-105, and 80-200 (not the 70-200, sadly)... anyway...
I've been there a couple of times, and would definitely suggest bringing the 70-200. For indoor shots you'd need a fast wide-angle. I don't have the 24-70 2.8, so I'm not sure how wide it would be on the D90, but I suspect you'll lack the extra reach on the wide end... so I'd say 18-105, 70-200, and maybe the 24 f/2.8 prime would be good :).

  15.
Well, if I got the EPL I'd definitely get the EVF for it. It does come with a flash, which is an advantage.
Getting the EPL would save me some money to get the adapter for my R lenses and some filters as well...
Are there many differences features-wise? Other than the EP2 having 2 more art filters...

  16.
I'm selling my D90 in favor of a smaller camera. Yes, I understand the differences, and am only doing so because I have a Leica R8. Carrying both SLR systems is a pain, especially since I travel often.
So I was planning to get a either the E-P2, or the E-PL1, and once in a while use my R lenses on it...
Do you think the E-P2 is worth the extra $500? The EVF is $250, so if I were to buy that with the E-PL1, that would make the difference only $250... but is it worth it?
Thanks,
Dave.

  17.
Richard,
Frankly, I wouldn't have even gotten the Nikon 80-200 if it weren't for my younger brother's sports activities - and now I don't need it anymore. I would have sold the D90 when I had just gotten the R8, but needed the fast AF and all the benefits that come with a DSLR, which is why I kept it until now.
Now I have the R8 for taking pics of what I want/like, and just need a compact digital camera with auto-focus - for quick on-the-go snapshots.
Since I will be traveling a lot more this year (in fact, I will be traveling from the end of this May 'till about July of 2011, non-stop), I cannot lug around two SLR systems with me. The E-P2, or the E-PL1 seem like a good enough digital camera for to suit my needs, but they seem too pricey for me to justify the cost... I'm still thinking about it :).
Barry,
I am just looking for a "flexible" camera. Not for any serious stuff.
Alan,
I will look into the Lumix cameras you've suggested. As for the rangefinder, perhaps in a few years :). I'd love to get one now (I actually have a FED-2), but I need a small P&S more at the moment.

Thank you all for your responses!

  18.
Michael,
I've thought about the DMR, and came to the conclusion that it's too expensive... :) Although I would definitely love to have it.
Gil,
Keeping the R8 would be like driving the car I couldn't afford :). I actually used to own a 18-200 which I sold to buy the 80-200, and got the 18-105 until I got a 17-55 (or 24-70, to later use on an FX body). Anyway... I'm really fond of the D90, and the only reason I'm selling it, is because I have to huge/heavy SLR bodies, and it's too heavy to carry around when I travel.
I just need a digital camera for 3 main reasons:
1) Instant results
2) Autofocus
3) small size (smaller than a DSLR, at least).
So I took a 'peek' at the Olympus E-P2 and found out that with an adapter I can use my Leica R lenses on it! Which got me VERY excited... and then there is the E-PL1.

  19.
Starvy,
I'm hoping to sell the D90 + 18-105VR + MB-D80 + SB-400 for around $1400 (?? +-)... so that would be my budget. The Nikon 80-200 AFS would go to sponsor the Leica 80-200.
Michael,
How much does the M8.2 cost? I was considering that, but I'm afraid it's way too expensive for me... although I would definitely jump at it if it's in the $1200 area (lens included)... :D I really haven't looked into the M8.2 deeply enough to know much about the price and etc...
Bob,
I will look into the GF1... what do you think of the Olympus EP-2?
Thank you all for your responses :).

  20.
Oh, the reason I'm selling the D90 is not because I don't like it/or am satisfied with it... It's just that I have two huge slrs with all the lenses, and it's not helpful when traveling...
So I just need a small (nice!) P&S, or maybe one of the micro 4/3 cameras, if they pass as small cameras...
