Just wanted to thank you all for your knowledgeable and thoughtful responses.
I'm going to print this out, read it all again and make an educated decision!
THANKS!

Dan - my camera is set to RAW output. I usually input to Aperture - the file extension there is .CR2 - then export to my desktop and input to Photoshop Elements. The metadata in Bridge indicates 3504x2332; 21MB and 72ppi.
The client has a vendor who will produce my image on glass so that it'll be transparent. I want to be sure that the file I provide will produce the best quality possible.

Question to all: if ppi doesn't matter, is it best if I just leave it alone and provide them with a tiff?

-

First, many thanks to everyone for helping me understand this.
Is there a method in the printing process which can soften, blend or blur the look of the pixelizing?
Separately, are images with a gausian blur likely to suffer less?

Did I use the wrong terminology? Is it ppi? The place where I'm having images printed tells me that 72 is too small for enlarging to wall size.

I'm currently shooting with a Canon EOS 20D (8.2 megapixel CMOS sensor), in RAW at the maximum quality setting (large fine). When providing a tiff or psd file to my printer, I can only get a dpi of 72 tops. If I upgrade to a Canon EOS 5D with 13 megapixels, can I hope to increase dpi to near 300?
Generally I'm needing to print my photos large enough to fill a wall (roughly 8x10') and I'd like to stay digital. Would the 5D allow me to do this?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Such terrific information there. Thanks to all!
If I'm pitching to local galleries, any specific advice?

Responding to Mikael...In an effort to "narrow the field:"
First, I assumed that anything juried would require a fee...true? So yes, willing to pay to play. Country is unimportant if the organization is reputable. I'm from the US, but am I missing something here? My subject is abstract/nature and portraiture and I'm looking to have my work exhibited.
Is there a listing somewhere for juried shows and their calendars?

What are some reputable organizations that hold competitions?
Suggestions, anyone?

Wonderful article! He's an inspiration to all photographers. Would love to see him in action.

So a question remains...
If I edit in Aperture, then open in Bridge, edit on PS and save again in Bridge, can I delete the masters and versions in Aperture?
This sounds like a bad math problem from high school.
And again, appreciate any advice.

Thank you, Peter and Benjamin! This read has been terrific as I'm doing something similar with Aperture & Bridge.
An added question...if I'm importing my RAW images into Aperture, but my external image editor is Bridge, am I overloading my computer with unnecessary photo files? Also, if I delete image files from Aperture, will they then be deleted from Bridge automatically as well? My photo workload is expanding and I want to be as efficient as possible.
Sooo appreciate your comments!

Many thanks to you all for the thoughtful responses.
My one remaining question is...are all digital SLRs likely to go 'full frame' in the not so distant future? Just wondering if I'll soon regret not buying a full frame lens.

I do portraits of kids and families and have had great success using my Canon EOS 20D with the 18-55mm lens it came with. I'd love to upgrade to better glass that'll still allow me the mobility I need to capture kids on the move. Would it be worth it for me to buy a better lens such as the EF 24-105mm, the EF 28-135mm or the EF-S 15-85? Not certain if the EF-S series is even compatible with me 20D. My budget is tight (whose isn't?) and also wondering if there's a reputable used dealer to consider. I'd so appreciate the advice from the more experienced!
Many thanks,

As a novice, I've gotta ask...how do you low-rez photos? I use Aperture - would I have to do it on Photoshop?

William W...a question! You say:
20D can be pushed to ISO3200 reasonably with skill and correct exposure, the newer bodies can be pushed to ISO6400 and get the same or better results – and again this depends on what the EV is you are shooting – you need to get to the gym and answer that question also. Then it is a matter of is the $300 worth it to you or not.

Specifically, how do you push a 20D to ISO3200? I've seen this mentioned before and don't know how to do it.
Many thanks!
