If you look at some of Robert Mapplethorpe's formal B/W portrait work, you'll notice that he was able to create a
glowing, ethereal effect with facial tones. Faces seem to "pop" off the page.
Was this more of a result of lighting technique, use of filters or darktoom expertise?

What effect, if any, does using a red filter (#25) on a lens have on Caucasian skin tones when taking a portrait using B/W film? Do skin tones become lighter? Would the same effect occur whether the image is taken using available light or flash? Thanks for the help!

Does using a len's filter (such as yellow, green or red) that would typically be used for traditional b/w film have a similar effect on chromogenic C-41 film, such as Kodak BW 400CN or Ilford XP2 Super?

Is there a difference I would expect to see in regards to tonal values and quality in a print if I shoot C-41
color film, scan it and convert the image to B/W via Photoshop Elements versus shooting a
traditional B/W film or even a B/W C-41 chromogenic film such as Kodak B/W 400CN?
I think using C-41 color would give me the flexibility to print the image both in color and
B/W.
