  1. I recently did a ride to SW Wisconsin for color, apples and roads. Turns out I could pick one! Cold rain rain rain, made colors dreary, roads wet and no fresh apple pie! I have to ride up there again...as usual my R1200GS performed flawlessly. D810 w 24-70 2.8 nikkor Awheel in Iowa outside of Dubuque on a hike to Willow River Falls near Hudson, WI Willow River Falls
  2. Not a landscape, but its cousin, a skyscape...a screen capture from a timelapse I made of this year's Perseid Meteor Shower, from Big Sky, Montana. The Andromeda Galaxy (2.5+ million lightyears away, is circled to the right--the oval smudge of light. Streaking past--the arrow--is a Perseid, prob 20-40 miles away. The northern limb of the Milky Way is in the big oval on the left. In the right lower center two smudges stand out...I think that is The Double Cluster in Perseus, about 7500 LY away. D810, 16-35. Hint: wait a day or so before you decide to delete all the frames you use in a timelapse. I wish I had.
  3. D810 here...Nikon glass...If I have something that I am critically focusing, I go manual with live view zoomed in. Yes, that does mean the camera is on a tripod. Most often of the three things that can hinder sharpness to me, ie subject movement, camera movement or focus, the first two are more likely than the third. The sharpness achieved with live view zoomed in is amazing to me.
  4. so, Sandy, this is your water shot of the lunar maria :)
  5. Gooseberry Falls in the arrowhead of MN...OB water shot 8) Carhenge, Alliance, Nebraska Garden path, Big Sky, Montana
  6. from another 72 yo... how's your hip? What did you decide to get? Are you satisfied? I too am looking, but want something that collapses to a short length, is light and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
  7. The kitchen, Palace Cafe, New Orleans
  8. Then you need to walk over and talk to them. I cannot speak about Adorama, but the guy at the Nikon kiosk at B&H, Jerry, is a very helpful person and I believe would spend some time with you just talking about your situation. I think you'd get good advice. You may pay more than Ebay or classified, but you are paying for (potential) service after the sale, if you need it.
  9. The Roseman Bridge, one of the "bridges of Madison County," Winterset, Iowa and graffiti within..."When your heart is broken, all your boats are burned. Nothing matters anymore."
  10. not ducks...not a pair. Grand Marais, MN
  11. Chief Joseph Hwy intersects w Beartooth just north of Yellowstone. It is beautiful also. It goes east and you may be able to hook up with US2. Also, consider strongly Little Bighorn. Of US battlefields I've visited, this one is different in its feel, for me stronger than Gettysburg. Also, if you can incorporate Devil's Tower, that would be very desirable. If you've never seen it, it should be a bucket-list item. Watch for motorcycles. BT and CJH are two iconic motorcycle roads.
  12. Kakabeka Falls near Thunder Bay, Ontarion The "Sleeping Giant" of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Ontario Lighthouse, Duluth, MN, at dusk all d810, 24/70 and 70/200
  13. Tipitina's on the corner of Napoleon and Magazine here in New Orleans is one of the premier iconic music venues. On some Sundays professional musicians tutor the upcoming generation, thus ensuring the musical legacy of the city for decades to come (assuming we don't go under water). Last Sunday was one such date and my grandson, whom we've dubbed Trumpet Shorty was "in that number." Three shots all d810 w 24/70 @ 10000(!) iso.
  14. Grand Marais, MN across the street from the Co-Op
  15. Earlier this month I accomplished a long held dream of riding up to and circling Lake Superior on the bike in my avatar, a BMW R1200GS. All shots with D810 and the 24/70 or the 70/200. The lighthouse with Live View focusing REALLY zoomed in (makes a difference). The other two are hand held with auto focus Split Rock Lighthouse Sleeping Giant Provincial Park On the road, countryside near Great River Road Iowa/Wisconsin border
  16. Yes, I mean minus 10 stops. By cheapo I meant price only, not brand. My budget is about $100 for this. I looked at KEH, Adorama, BHPhoto, Roberts. I looked unsuccessfully for used. So I am seeing Hoya SOLAS IRND 3.0 77mm Infrared Neutral Density Filter @120 lowest "reviews" Promaster IRND1000X (3.0) HGX Prime Lens Filters @110 B+W ND 3.0 10 Stops (SC)@ 70 (w/o infrared filtration it appears but without vignetting at 24mm Heliopan 77mm Solid Neutral Density 3.0 Filter (10 Stop) @ 160 highest reviews and there are some others It appears that there are 3 price points, the $30 range, the 100+ and the $300. If it sounds like I am a bit confused trying to compare apples and oranges, I am. Or maybe I am not confused and you get what you pay for?
  17. I'd like to try some long exposure photography, so I am in the market for a 10x ND filter 77mm for my d810 The prices range from ~~$30 to $250 ish. The only criticism I see is reddish tint and possibility of flare on the lower priced filters. Is that it? Are those the major issues? I do not see anything about IQ, or maybe I missed it? I do not mind color correcting in post, and some have said the "warming effect" can be pleasing, and I will likely NOT be shooting into a light source. Should I go for the cheapo Hoya, Vivitar, or step up to the <$100 B+W? The $250 one is hard to justify, but I seek the collective wisdom of photo.net, and TIA
  18. I am using both the 1450 and the 1550 to travel, including on the back of a mototcycle. They work fine. I am usually carrying the d810 (formerly d700), with 24/70 attached and the 16-35/4 and the 70-200/2.8. There is room for a 55 micro, battery cleaning cloth. They work great.
