  1. A couple of hummingbird photos from our recent cold spell. I keep a feeder available as there's not much around for them in the winter.

They often camp in one the trees near the feeder and puff themselves up until they're fluffy spheres.

Then on top of the cold we got two feet of snow, quite unusual for this area. It took me much of the week to dig out.

One morning while heading out to clear snow I spotted a humming bird down at the side of my deck.

It was still alive but appeared to be close to freezing. Thoughts of how to thaw a frozen hummer raced through my mind.

I have a heating pad made from a wool sock filled with grain. A few minutes in the microwave and it's great on sore joints.

A couple minutes in the microwave made it warm to touch, but not hot. This was used to construct a warm nest for little hummer.

This got placed on the deck railing and bird allowed me to pick it up and place it in the nest. Almost as an after thought I used my ear warmer as a blanket.

The D3200 was handy so got a record shot in case this worked. Left hummer alone and hoped for the best while I carried on clearing snow.

About ten minutes later I returned to see how my patient was doing. Obviously quite well as it popped out and flew away, hopefully it survived.

Dieter, where was this photo taken? A few years ago I got some great shots at Ano Nuevo State Park, but I know there are other venues along the coast.

  3. 70-200 ???? Are you way up in the bleachers?

I'm on the court floor or the first row, and I use a 35/1.8 on a DX camera. I switched to the 35 prime for the sole reason of lens speed, in the dim gym.

    I'm shooting at ISO 3200, 1/500 sec, f/2.

I would prefer a DX 18-50/2.8 or FX 24-70/2.8, for the flexibility when the players come close, and the better reach to the far end. But then with the f/2.8 aperture, I would have to bump the ISO up to 6400, or drop the shutter speed to 1/250 :( The 24-120/4 would be nicer, but that is yet another stop slower than the f/2.8 lenses :(

Nope. Right under the basket or at the corner. I tried a 17-50 2.8, but couldn't get what I wanted. and yes, I do miss the shots 3 ft in front of me. DSC_9556.thumb.jpg.ab24c9590f93b13646008e0a83026a3b.jpg DSC_9967.thumb.jpg.27c3e583ec7f7cbf66c967d577f21282.jpg

  4. I just started shooting high school basketball and it took me 1/2 game to get the camera dialed in. I shoot at 3200 iso and anywhere from 1/500 to 1/1000 using a 70-200 2.8 at the goals. Allows for tight shots at my end and good shots at the opposite. I also use jpg as it is easier to edit if properly exposed to begin with. Any noise can be dealt with in ACR using noise reduction. Great learning experience and having fun!
