This is one of those photographs that is immediately engaging. You are given just enough detail to be drawn into the picture. There is nothing superfluous and the overall tonal balance is perfect. Photography at its best!

This is one of those pictures where the image is not merely a representation of something else, but rather, the image has a life of its own, so to speak, the image speaks for itself. I love the stark simplicity. It takes you in to an uncluttered scene that leaves you with a sense of marvel.

  1. To me there is a strong sense of place in spite of some of the technical arguments above. It is hard to separate the technical elements of the picture from the subject matter: and in this case, the subject matter is a beautiful landscape. And I think the time of day was perfect for a good balance of light also for the distant mountans and the shadow below.

It looks to me like the picture has some serious problems with exposure, temperature, tone. The blast of light coming from lower left is not properly exposed. Somewhat of a curious portrait, as poorly developed images often are. You could argue in favor of it from some aesthetic point of view, but to me, as soon as I look at it, I see the technical flaws. It's almost like having to look at something through a dirty glass. There is a haze that is not flattering at all.

  2. I understand the idea of the meeting of two cultures, but it is not a strong, dramatic representation of it. To me, personally, it is not a very powerful image. The characters are not looking at each other, they’re going about their business in a casual way, nothing there to grab my attention.

This is a very nice shot, well done, good posing. The only improvement I might suggest is adding some light to soften the shadows. The way I look at it, it is almost too harsh on the right side.

  3. This is an interesting image. To me, it speaks in two layers: the foreground is a silhouette of what looks like an old town with a church steeple reaching to the skies, but the entire layer is superimposed by the much larger second layer of some huge industrial complex, blowing opaque smokestacks into the night sky. It is almost like a tale of times past surrendered to the new industrial age with the night cover as a metaphor.

In any case: interesting and well done!

Let me add to my earlier comment that I didn’t mean to use the word "snapshot" in a dismissive sense but more in a descriptive sense. The image truly looks to me like a cute snapshot. I don’t know how to give a better description of my own perception. And off course I could be wrong. That’s why we have multiple posters.
