while lens swapping is unavoidable, you want to minimize that exercise, because a moment could be lost while you are at it. that is why i use the 24-70mm, because i minimize the swapping since that lens can cover most situations. you need to take that into consideration as well.

unless you shoot in a lot of dark places that requires extreme high isos, 5d gives you more bang for your buck.

5d all the way. its just way better than 40d, especially in lower light situations.
since you are shooting events, low light will be a factor in your shots.

just wanted to point out the warning that it comes with stroboscopic shooting. if you do it too often within too short of a period of time you might damage the flash.
warning is in the manual too.

what is the lens and the settings you shot for your pic?
if the whole image is too big, maybe crop part of the image where you can tell the difference between the two and maybe that might help in deciphering this.

you might want to also consider exposure bracketing until you get a hang of things. that way you can shoot 3 and pick the one that turned out the best.

you might want to get yourself a tripod. zoom lenses will wear on you after a day of holding it.
and 4.5-5.6 is awfully slow for indoor sport use. you might want to find a faster lens, or maybe a body that have a usable higher iso settings.

go read the stats on dxmark.com . 5dm2 is barely superior than 5d. not worth its 2x price tag if you ask me.
unless you shoot pictures in caves, in which case you probably want the extra isos on the new one.
