Hi Gary, fascinating image. Of course I'm naturally drawn into the scene by the perspective and focus at sea level, but I also naturally follow the curvature of the coastline from left to center which then ties in nicely with the curvature of the nearby hillside on the right. Great, great shot! Into the favs folder. Kind regards, Charles.

Hi Giangiorgio: I’m struck by the quality of the light and of course the interesting symmetry. Great capture - subject, pose and exposure. Ciao, Charles.

Actually not "open shade" just shade :)

Hi Vincent, thank you so much for your comments. Unlike most small birds, this warbler species has extra long hind claws and dense leg muscles for its size allowing it creep along tree trunks in all directions much like a woodpecker. There was a significant green cast to the original image from the sunlight filtered through a green canopy. I tried neutralizing this without making it appear heavily edited. Thanks again for your observations. Take care, Charles.

Hi Vincent. Thanks for your visit and comments. You're right about the lighting conditions - sunshine had given way to clouds creating open shade. I almost wish f/4 had been available to me to keep the iso down. As you know, wrens almost never stand still in the open for long, so yes absolutely a challenge for photographer and equipment.

Hi Vincent, thanks so much for your comments. I took this photo some time ago, around 2010, when I purchased the eos 500d. I remember nearly stumbling upon this heron which was standing perfectly still almost camouflaged along the edge a pond. It glanced at me then quickly focused it's attention on something more interesting :).

Hi Todd, thank you very much for your comments. I did indeed crouch to take this shot (my knees were definitely not happy). Take care.

Hey Mick! Yeah, I have that problem with hawks lately.

Hi Vincent: It seems like I've been drawn to this type of subject many times from my beginnings in photography, probably for the same reasons that prompted you to capture this image...the low-angle light highlighting the intriguing texture of this weathered old tree trunk, ravaged by insects, still serving a purpose - likely providing shelter to birds and/or other animals. I may upload a series of such images of my own, the latest of which were taken with the same fine lens.
Best regards, Charles.

Normally I wouldn't photograph a butterfly on the ground, however this time I felt the color and texture of the surrounding pebbles would still compliment the natural beauty of this large butterfly species, common here in eastern North America. Considered leaving this in my personal files, but was inspired to share by recent posts from Vincent and Giangiorgio. Best regards, Charles.
