1.
I did a trip 2 months ago to Israel. My goal was to focus on landscapes, with the occasional portrait of my wife. I have a 7D, and I only brought the Canon 10-22mm and the 24-105 L. I found those to be more than enough for me, and most of the time I was shooting the 10-22. I've attached a couple of pics I took at the Mitzpe Ramon canyon which is the largest non impact crater in the world (about 43KM across).

00bDE7-512591584.jpg.491029093eda81385c659e420c30b532.jpg

 2.
Hi Evan,
My daughter studies Aikido and over time I became the dojo's photographer. The dojo is a member of the Birankai North America organization and last year they asked me to be their official summer camp photographer. I spent about 4 days shooting for them. If you can use a flash, set yourself in manual mode with high speed and low f stop as previously mentioned by many posters. If you are not able to use flash, I would recommend spot metering, time priority, and the best ISO you can use without generating too much noise. Here's a link to the pictures I took for your reference:
The key is to have fun. Cheers!

 3.
Just found the following article online today. Basically a photographer in NY was arrested for filming, and the police have decided that his arrest will be 'nullified' and the police force will get 'refresher training'.
4.
When I was learning to shoot pool, I befriended a former pro player who was kind enough to take time to teach me how to think before shooting. He shot with a black walnut cue wrapped with pink linen thread. He said it was because he loved the looks on the faces of the people he beat when they had to tell their friends they were 'beat by the guy with the pink cue.' He constantly reminded me - "It's the indian, not the arrow."
