  1. Hi Mohammad,

I own an 450D/XSI/Kiss as well. If the you have the camera on and don't use it for a miute or so it goes into stand-by mode. To wake the camera up you depress the "shutter" button. Are you turning the camera off and then on right way when it is in sleep mode ? That's the only thing I can think of that may be happening to you.

If this is not the case you may want to reach out to Canon. They are very responsive and should be able to help you out.

  2. Michael,

I am a large reatil store owner. My family has been in the reatil business for 54 years. We have a very prosperous business even in these poor financial times. There is Nothing, Absolutely Nothing wrong with trying to get a better price for something by way of verbal negotiations. It should be done with finesse though, and not by saying things in a brash or take or leave it manner.

Sometimes at the very least you can get a discount by paying cash (without paying the tax%). It never hurts to ask. If your tax rate is 7.00% you could say "if I pay cash can I save 7%". Anyone with a pulse will know what you are refering to without using the words No Tax.

Bob is correct with repectect to the large e-trade business (Amazon/B&H/Adorama etc.). However, your chances are better with the brick and mortar stores (your local photo shops).

  3. Sarah: Thank you..I have been eyeing that lens but, without first hand knowledge I was wary. Your comments help a lot. And I do shoot in RAW (lol..not in the raw) so post process. will be helpful. I also agree the the lack of IS is not as important with 17-40mm due to its slightly shorter barrel.

Rainer: The reason I do not want he S lenses is that with good glass being sooooo expensive (for me) I don't want my lenses to be married to a crop body. At some point (when my technique improves and the funds are avail. I will step up from the crop 1.6 body. I have heard good things about the 10-22mm. However, it is not an inexpensive lens and it is an S.

Scott: I havn't checked out the Tokina..I will now. Thank you.

  4. Hi Folks,

Wondering if you could help me out. My head is spinning concerning what wide angle lens would be "best" for me.

    I would would prefer a non-S lens. I currently own 1 lens for my crop body. A 24-105 L.

I did notice that Tamron is going to be releasing the SP AF10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di-II LD Aspherical [iF]. However, until

it is out and had some reviews I am on hold. In the mean time I thought I would ask for your suggestions with lenses

that you have had good experiences with and are happy with.

A prime would be fine as well. I want it for shooting landscapes.

    Thanks :-)

  5. Wow Rob..anyway moving on...

As an alternative Anthony you can always set the XSI to shoot both Raw and Jpeg at the same time. Only draw back is that you will chew up more memory. The result is that you will have 2 files of the same photo. One in JPEG format and the other in RAW. Hence you have the best of both worlds and choices...you can choose to eat the apple or the orange or both...have fun and, the question was a good one. You'll just have to choose the most appropriate answers.

  6. I purchased my 450D (XSI) body only for about $620 no tax/no ship fee, and picked up Canon EF F4

24-105mm IS USM L lens. It was the only lens I purchased. I didn't bother with the kit lens because I felt that the 18-55mm while cheap just wasn't good enough.

In any case..purchase a lens that suits your needs (what you like to shoot ...landscape/portrait/macro)

  7. I own a 450D and purchased the Canon grip after about 2 weeks of ownership. I wasn't sure if I would like it though. After using it for a few day trips I can say that I like the extra stability it provides. However, one of the main reasons I bought the XSI was its size. With larger lenses (telephoto) the grip is nice.

With that said it is a bit like Blonde or Brunet...

  8. This has been a great thread for me and I have picked up some good points. I have an ef lens that uses a 77mm filter

size. My question is about pricing and quality. For instance, I have been looking at a enhancing filter and Polorizing

filter by Heliopan. My confusion is that there seems to be a preety big spread in prices for them. Some are about

$160 - over $200. This from the same site (buydig.com) What is the difference ?

    Here is a link for a $159 one at buydig.com http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=HLCPL77

    and

Here is a link for a $212.75 one at the same site. http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=HLCPLSMC77

both are circular and glass...that much I can tell. I know some of you lean towards B&H however, I find better prices

else where and am on a limited budget..

At the end of the day I am looking for a good enhancer filter and a good circular polorizer. I am using a Canon EF 28-

105mm AF lens on my 450D/XSI body.

Thanks for any help I can get on this subject.

btw...I predominantly shoot landscape and potrait. I reallize these two filters are not best for portrait shots.
