1.
Depending on the ISO in use on the D300, high ISO noise reduction in camera can also lend to a bit of softens as it tries to tone down the amount of noise. That's why I have that setting at low because I find it softens things a bit too much for me.

 2.
Tom,

I'd leave the serious stuff at home, bring a small point and shoot, and just enjoy the game.

Sure, when I'm covering any game (I'm a newspaper photographer) I bring two cameras, lenses, etc and am ready to work., but when I'm there to actually take in a game for fun and enjoy them, they are much more fun when you can actually enjoy them without having to worry about spilling ketchup or beer on your beloved lens.

Just my advice.

Have fun,

Gabe.

 3.
I think the D2H would be a good bet for you. I'm the staff photographer at a newspaper and it's a great, solid camera. Anything below ISO 800 is fine, and if you do need to raise it to 1600 in a pinch as long as you expose it correctly, the noise is not as prominent. The key with this camera is nailing the exposure, as it should be for any photographer, however the noise does rear its head if you don't expose it correctly.

As for the 4 MP, as long as you shoot tight it shouldn't be a problem. If you grab a long lens - so maybe the 70-300 would be good for you - and fill the frame with your subject you'll be fine. I've gotten fine 8 by 10 or bigger prints when doing that. It's when you try to crop the devil out of a 4 MP image that's when things get nasty.

Good luck with your decision...I looked at the D300 awhile back too - when it was still at $1700 - and deemed it just wasn't for me yet for the price point. Maybe soon though when the price will eventually drop.

 4.
Just getting ready to add my Kenko Pro 300 DG 1.4x to my insurance policy, but cannot find the serial number on the product. For those who have this TC, do you know where it is? There is a number located on the box, but not sure if that is the correct one.

Thanks,

Gabe.

 5.
Nice shots everyone. Richard, I especially like you're eagle and Matt's emissions are needless to say interesting. What is that? A tail pipe?

This week is a contribution from a local annual River Festival and these two thought it would be fun to hurl water baloons at the crowd.

Have a great week everyone.

Gabe.

00TwQ1-154867584.jpg.c2ac1cb1980b8775f2b9b67b32f9da73.jpg

 6.
Nice 600 Nic ;-)

The comfort does look exceptional though which will be a nice break from shoulder bags especially as they'll be many street festivals I'll be covering for the paper coming up through the summer and into early fall which means lots of walking. Anything to make things more comfortable is a welcome respite as I'm sure you all know.

Thanks again for all the input folks.

Gabe.

 7.
Matt,

Thank You! Thank You! and Thank You! That looks awesome...at first I was a little worried of it being too big but I don't think I'm concerned now. I really appreciate you taking the time to do that.

I also like how I can add a few extra components onto the bag to make it how I want it...it really is an appealing system. My other thought was to get the Speed Demon and add one of the lens changers to the belt for my 80-200 but this looks perfect so that I can still wear it as a shoulder bag when I want.

So thank you again and Think Tank will be getting an order from me pretty soon!

 8.
Nic - Thanks for the input. Very helpful.

And Edward - let me take a load off - literally. I would never carry all my gear in the pack at once. I always have at least one body (sometimes two) and a lens out in use so the bag won't be ripping at the seams and I don't think that pack would even hold that much to begin with.

Thanks.

 9.
Hi all,

I've been juggling bags for a while and after a lot of searching came across the Think Tank Speed Racer. Seems like it's a good balance for what I want - a waist bag, doubles as shoulder bag, holds a D2 or D3 series camera along with 80-200, and various odds and ends - while also being very accessible in the field. I use a backpack to haul stuff to location but this seems like it would be a good fit.

A little bit about me is that I usually work with two bodies but don't always want both out, use mainly a 17-55 and 80-200, and one body usually has a flash. I'm a photojournalist so the bag would be used on the fly and need to be readily accessible.

So, what I'm looking for please would be first-hand experiences with the bag, how practical it is to use, and also any other reccomendations.

Thank you in advance,

Gabe.

 10.
Great shots so far to everyone.

It hasn't stopped raining for a week up here so mine is a portrait of a baseball coach during quite the soggy contest.

Have a good week.

Gabe.

00TkYe-147815684.jpg.732599857b4175f99fa986213177a2a1.jpg

 11.
Great shots so far everyone...too many to pick favorites and not enough time to do it so kudos go to all.

My shot this week is a continuation of the past couple of week's osprey shots I've submitted and it especially goes out to Lil Judd, who showed particular concern for the birds after last week I mentioned some people wanted to kick the birds out. Lil, no worries, the story has a happy ending as the birds have now relocated themselves without any human prodding, to some big power lines closer to the water. As you can tell with this one, they really like fish.

Taken with a D90 w/ 80-200 f/2.8 @ f/4, ISO 200, 1/2000s, spot-metered.

00TPry-136405584.jpg.7200a7125941022d76e6410ce7edf6b4.jpg

 12.
Lil,

Thanks for your compliment and concern. We actually just received a letter to the editor (more than one) about the pictures that ran and now it's becoming a pretty big thing. So far I have only talked to one person who's concerned with the situation and when they suggested trying to "poke them gently down with broom sticks" and then asked what I thought, I quickly suggested calling the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. However, I didn't know it was such a great offense so thank you for alerting me to that and should anyone ask my opinion again I'll make sure to let them know they should call for help. Oh, and if it makes a difference, just for your curiosity, I live in Maine.

Thanks again, Lil, and enjoy your trip! To everyone else, wonderful shots!

Gabe.

 13.
Hi to everyone...as usual, wonderful images so far this week. Matthew very nice landscape and I also very much like Hasse's portrait and Ilkka's street shot, however all shots here are great.

This week has a little story to it. These two osprey have taken up residence in the chimney of the rectory of a local church, so I went and photographed them and we ran this picture big on the front page of the paper and now there is a public outcry to have them taken down before they "harm someone". I just told them to call me before they take them down because I don't know how they'll do it, it ought to be interesting. Those talons look sharp and they look like they want to stay there.

Technical info: D90 w/ 80-200 f/2.8 @ f/4, @ 200mm, ISO 200, spot-metered

Have a good week everyone.

00TLGv-134181684.jpg.973dce55deda6e099fd8ca26734ffbd9.jpg

 14.
Hi all, some nice shots here as always. Particularly liking Bernard's street performer and Hamish's landscape, beautiful. Oh, and Bruce, that's quite the find! A helicpoter on a yacht...doesn't everyone have one of those??? ;)

My contribution is a shot of part of a family of hawks who have taken into nesting in the chimney of a local church. Only after watching them did I really see that they are quite the flyers and hunters.

Have a good week all,

Gabe.

00TH1g-132125584.jpg.8cec15e47fc833fa395d035bc30199d7.jpg

 15.
I know it's been said before, but so many great shots this week folks...to many to mention but I will say Rene, that I agree with others in that I really like your shot. I just came back from a vacation myself...make sure you take time to relax and chill out!

My contribution is actually from that very trip to Florida of a bird sitting in a tree of the backyard of my brother's house.

Again, great shots and have a great week all.

 16.
To everyone - wonderful work. Great shots to all. Favorite's include Gary's owl, Dieter's sparrow - great captures, along with Tolga Anil's fun shot, and Chris Court's gorgeous landscape.

My contribution this week is from my trip to Florida last week. Saw this littly guy hiding in a tree near me. I look forward to seeing more great images all!

Take care,

 17.
Like Jon, I carry two bodies, more than two lenses, etc...but I think for you a very versatile sports lens would be a 70-200 f/2.8. You can use it in all circumstances and it won't break the bank neccesarily because you don't need IS.

Good luck in your search,

Gabe

 18.
Everyone - great shots as always. Particularly like Bruce's neon, Hammish's HDR, and Matthew's New Zealand. Gorgeous.

Mine this week is an existing light portrait of my 1-year old nephew taken about a month ago as I am traveling and don't have anything wicked current to post.

Take care all and have a good week.

Gabe.

 19.
Hey there everyone!

So many beatutiful landscapes already - Matthew's is absolutely gorgeous, and Gary's, Ian's, Hector's, Hammish's, Hector's, Richard, and Rob's are also wonderful. Great shots with manu more more to come I am sure.

This past week comedian and actor Bob Marley came to town in a return to his home state of Maine. Some of you may know him. He does quite the comedy tour cross-country and played the detective in Boondock Saints.

Have a great week all and take care!

 20.
Hi all - nice pics so far. Especially like Bruce's ferris wheel and Hector's gull.

Last week I was driving looking for a picture to meet the paper's deadline and came across this guy, sitting near the pole. Something about having the telephone pole in the back that I liked.

Take care everyone,

 22.
Noiseware works well. It makes D2H files shot at 1600 look like they were shot at 800, and it retains much detail.
