1.
Trust me... the extra length of the 3 series tripod is not worth the extra hassle when traveling. If you look around the nature phtog lists the 3540LS is being used by guys well over 6 feet tall with lenses as big as 600mm.

I still can't find the difference between the 3540 and the 3541... If you can get a better deal on a 3540, take it.

  2.
I have the 3540LS and it's the best tripod I have ever owned. IT's SO light you don't know it's there... but it's ROCK solid with all sections extended. I also have the optional center column.

I don't know if there is any difference between the 3540LS and the 3541LS... I have looked at them and can find no difference at all. I think the 3541 is a year newer but no different.

The XLS is taller but you will have to check it as luggage on flights... the LS can be carried aboard.... This makes a VERY big difference.

  3.
I have the Gitzo 3540LS which is really overkill for that camera with a lens under 200mm... I use mine for 35mm through large format... The 2 series systematic would do fine. They are THE best tripods made and will last you a lifetime. Well worth the extra money.

  4. Never... I repeat NEVER use a camera strap or bag strap with anti-slash metal in it. There are a number of cases where these straps have caused the DEATH of the holder when the bag was grabbed by someone on a motorbike and either the victim was dragged into traffic or the neck was broken.

If they want the damn camera that bad they can have it.

The best defense is a bag that does not scream CAMERA!!!! Take a look at the ThinkTank Urban Disguise line. very well made and does not scream camera.

  5. If you can get the last generation of the ArcaSwiss B1 with the small gret drag adjustment wheel then that i what I would suggest.... Flip locks can be dangerous... catch it on something and BINGO...
  6. Hi,

I have the 3540LS which is the 4 section pod... and it is also the sytematic which means it comes standard with a flat center plate which can be easily and quickly removed and replaced with accessories such as the center column. I have found the tripod to be perfectly stable with the column fully extended... but I'm not using a 600mm lens either. Any Gitzo systematic has a removeable flat plate.

  7. I use a RRS pano Clamp with a heavy DSLR, a heavy MF and a Canon G9. Use RRS L brackets. Love the stuff. All sits on either a Leitz ball head for light work or an ArcaSwiss B1. All this sits on a Gitzo 3540LS Carbon 6X.

Can't say enough about the RRS pano Clamp. It's perfection and it's built like a Frickin TANK.

  8. Either the 2 or 3 series systematic Gitzo is the best choice you can make... period. End of discussion. I have been using Gitzo's for 35 years and they have been great... but the Carbon 6X series with G-Locks is perfection and they are light and indestructable. I like the 4 section legs as you can carry the tripod on a plane. The add-on column is great for macro work as you can reverse it. The 3540LS will support up to a 600MM or a heavy MF and even a LF camera. It IS rock-solid even with ALL sections extended. I would assume the 2 series is also but won't hold the same weight.

Go for it. Unless it's stolen, it will outlive you.

  9. The rumors of MF death have been greatly exagerated. MF stuff is selling for a pittance right now... becase PEOPLE ARE SCARED and EVERYTHING is selling for a pittance compared to just a few months ago. Things are very scary out there... but MF film still beats the hell out of the best digital.

As far as MF cameras... The Pentax 6X7 has the faltest film plane around... but I have really liked Hasselblad for the square format... it really makes me see and compose in a different way... That's why I use it. I think film MF will be around for a long time... and when the economy gets better the resale valuses of your MF will climb as well.

  10. I bought a used AS in perfect condition. When I got it it was locked. I called PC and they said that they had been instructed to

fix ANY AS head with that problem under warranty.... FREE! I sent it in and 4 days later I had a like brand new AS B1! I have

never has such a good customer service experience in my life. The PC folks are great... and AS pays them for the work... It

will come back to you with a full warranty as well. You lucked out.

  11. If you even think that Photography is a passionof yours... save the money and get a Gitzo as that's what you will end up with anyway. They are the best and last forever. Also... see if you can get a used ArcaSwiss B1 ball head on eBay. They are great. get the last version with the small grey drag adjustment wheel. The RRS clamps are fantastic and they work well with the ArcaSwiss and RRS heads. The 2 series Gitzo is strong enough for what you need... the 3 series will hold a Pro DSLR with a 600mm or MF/LF camera.
