1.
You could rent one. I've rented multiple times from lensrentals.com and found their service very good. The Canon 100-400 and Tamron 200-600 are two lenses you might consider. Be sure to tell them you'll be taking the gear out of the country.

 2.
It's possible a firmware hack like Magic Lantern might be able to do it.

DSLR sensors aren't really designed for continuous-duty video capture. They tend to overheat.

 3.
Depending on how large you're printing these photos, the difference between the 15-85 and 17-50 may or may not matter. If you removed the chromatic aberration from the 15-85 images, which is easy to do, you might not be able to see any difference even in a pretty big print.

Remember when you're pixel peeping, you're looking at the equivalent of a gigantic enlargement. Like a 36x54 inch print.

 4.
Stefanie, thanks for the samples. A few observations,
- The 15-85 clearly has much more chromatic abberation than the 17-50, this is causing the red/blue color fringes visible in those photos. It's remarkable how much better the 17-50 is in this regard.
- Your shutter speed was high enough on all of these, camera shake is not likely to be a problem.
- The 15-85 does seem a little weak, though it isn't awful. Since foregrounds seem to be better, I'm wondering if it's focusing too close, and if the small apertures you're using are concealing most of the focus error.
Most lens problems will be easier to see with the lens wide open, so the small apertures are working against us for detecting problems, particularly focus errors.

 5.
You could wait for the recently announced EF-S 10-18mm IS, which is expected to be shipping in June. It's only $300, very reasonably priced.

The EF-M 11-22 isn't officially being marketed in the US, though some people might be importing them. But I think they're always "grey market", without a US warranty. Probably not many people in this forum have experience with it, though it's a fine lens as far as I've read.

 6.
For reference, KEH is currently selling one in excellent condition for $600.

I doubt Canon will service it. But you could ask their service department to be sure. Some larger camera shops will probably work on them. The focus screen is interchangeable, so that's a fixable issue. Dust on the mirror is generally irrelevant; dust on the sensor more of an issue, especially if you shoot stopped down.

I still use my 5D mk I and it still takes great pictures. It lacks live view, but otherwise it's similar to the 40D. They use the same batteries and memory cards. The 5D can't accept EF-S lenses, of course.

 7.
Thanks for the notes so far. I should clarify that when I said "commercial purposes" I meant the use wasn't personal, educational, non-profit, etc. It's to be used in a music video which will be distributed online, not in advertising.

 8.
There's no way it's worth $7,000. This video could be reproduced for $1,000 or so if the weather was right. Or for free if you happen to be flying somewhere and have good clouds and a reasonably clean window, which is how I came to get it in the first place.

I found a similar video at istockphoto.com, it can be yours for $170. I might have left some money on the table, but not thousands.

http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-video-20690286-above-the-clouds.php?st=1160a24

Thanks for the tips though, I'll make sure there's a written license.

 9.
...He needed a price quickly, so I offered $100 for non-exclusive rights, and he accepted. So the price end has now been settled. Still interested in any feedback about what needs to be done next - anything that needs to be specified in contracts, do we even need a contract, how to accept payment, etc.

 10.
I'm a hobbiest photographer who occasionally does a little paid work. I mostly shoot stills but I've done some video, some of which is on YouTube.

Someone has approached me asking to license a short clip (about 45 seconds) I've posted there. It's to be used for commercial purposes. It was shot from an airplane window and it's a nice clip, but nothing extraordinary. The quality is pretty good, and it's HD. No people are in the video so there shouldn't be any model release issues.

Any ideas for what would be a fair price to charge? And any other tips for proceeding? Thanks.
