1.
Perhaps some (or all/most) pornographers consider their work to be art???

"Now that is a hard one." No pun intended?

It is hard to define a difference, as everyone has their own opinion which is based on their own experience, upbringing, education etc.

I tend to think it can come down to the intention of the work... good luck legislating that.

I think the Supreme Court Justice put it well..."I know it when I see it".

Good luck with your quest.

Perhaps you could post some samples for us to judge. ;-)
Sorry... the teenager inside me made me write that.

 2.
Thank you all for your input. It is appreciated.

I think I will be going with the G12. I really like the sound of the S95, but am sure I'd end up wishing I'd gone with the G12.

I may have to convince someone i know that THEY need the SX30, just so that i can borrow it.

I'm sure my wife will be happy with the G12. The ability to set the camera so that you can be in the shot and wink at it to activate the self timer will be more than enough to impress her!

Thanks.

Scott.

 3.
Thanks PF, I don't think my wife will mind the size of the G12. There are plenty of options on it, but I can show her what to do as I have with my DSLR's. I have heard many good things about the s95, but I like the option to use a flash on the G12/SX30 if needed. I'm sure I'll be stealing "her" camera at times.

Susan, it's good to hear that you've been happy enough with the G series to keep buying them. That's always a good sign.

 4.
Thanks guys.

The common thread is clearly that I'm looking for a smaller, lighter camera and if that's my main criteria, then the choice is clear.

I suppose I was just thinking that, to me, the SX30IS is smaller and lighter. My wife on the other hand would probably like something that she can put in her handbag.

I really appreciate everyone's input. I'm going to go with the G12... I think! (that damn zoom range is so tempting!)

Scott.

 5.
Hi All, I wasn't sure which forum to post this question in, but I figured a lot of the EOS shooters may have or want a smaller camera to use from time to time.

I know this type of question has been asked before, but i couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

My wife wants a camera for Christmas. She doesn't want to lug around one of my camera's all the time and to be honest, neither do I. We need something smaller, lighter and with just one lens.

I have narrowed down my choices to either the Canon SX30IS or the Canon G12.

I think that I now have to choose between the super zoom of the SX30IS and the image quality of the G12. I'm sure some people will know other pro's and con's about these two.

It will be used for... all sorts of things.

I think I'm leaning towards the G12, but a zoom to the equivalent of 840mm sounds like fun.

If you know anything about these camera's, please let me know your thoughts. If you don't... feel free to comment anyway.

Thanks for your time.

 6.
Hi Kerri, I've only shot one TTD session and I loved it and the client loved the images. They ordered an extra album with just the TTD shots.

I don't care how much the dress cost, it's up to the client. I've booked another two sessions based on reactions to the first one. One of them is for a bride who wanted me to shoot her wedding, but i was already booked.

You don't have to ruin the dress, it depends on how adventurous the couple want to be.

The couple who's TTD day I've already done said that they didn't want to leave the dress in a box in the cupboard forever, so they loved the idea. After the TTD day, they dry cleaned the dress and donated it to charity.

By the way, I'm in Australia and haven't seen too many people doing it. I got the idea from here (photo.net). I'm also a fan of Tracy Turpen (US photog) and she did a session called "you, me and a bag of Wendy's", which I absolutely love. If you search for it on her blog you will find it. They seriously trashed the dress!

I would say offer the service. Not everyone will go for it, perhaps not many at all. But it's fun if you get the chance.

 7.
Hi Olivia, I'm just starting to play around with studio lighting. I got an Elinchrom kit (D-Lite 4) and am have just started using it. Just with the kids so far.

I don't have any enlightening wisdom to share, I just think that it's good fun and worth trying.

One thing is for sure though, it's just like starting out with DSLR's... once you start with the lighting, you'll want more and more extra's (more lights, reflector's, backdrop's, light meter etc.). So brace yourself for more expenses. That said, there is a lot to learn first with a basic setup.
Good luck.

 8.
I really don't see the Lightrom v Photoshop thing. I think both are great for different things.
Your results may not be any better with Lightroom, but you'll get there much quicker.
I shoot mainly weddings and I have halved my post processing time since I added Lightroom.
I'd suggest downloading it for free and trying it for 30 days. Scott Kelby's book is excellent for someone starting out.
Once you get your head around a few basic concepts, it's great.

Good luck.

Scott.

 9.
Unless you are planning to charge a fortune for this service, it will be difficult to base a business around it.

You could only offer to do it if it falls on a day that you're not already booked. maybe have a first and second backup photographer option.

Considering labor/birth can last for 24 hours (longer in some cases) and that you'll have to be willing to work through the night, it sounds very challenging.

I look forward to seeing other responses and hearing how others manage this.

Good luck!

Scott.

 10.
Hi Hank, I'm looking at getting an iMac aswell. I am no expert, but can let you know what i've been learning.

Higher clock speed or more cores depends on the program you are using and whether or not it can use multiple cores or not. The good thing about the iMac quad cores, is that the cores that aren't being used will shut off and the active cores "overclock". They run up to 20% faster I think. This is called turbo boost I think and is standard and automatic.

I understand that the standard video card is fine unless you are gaming or rendering 3D... I think!

No need to plan for ram upgrade (at least for the 27 inch) as there are two available slots to be used whenever you want. I'm going for the 4 x 2GB option.

I hope that helps at least a little.

Scott.

 11.
Hey Joe... where you goin', with that gun in your hand? Sorry, couldn't help myself (Hendrix).

I've only had LR3 on for a few days (PC) and I've noticed that if I'm doing a few things at once in other programs, LR seems to freeze up and then comes up with a message: "An unknown error has occurred."

I don't have to reload, just flick between modules.

I look forward to reading people's comments.

Good Luck.

Scott.

 12.
I think it depends on how badly you want to do it.

I once heard of a guy who was trying to find a photographer to be there (hidden) to capture shots of his proposal to his girlfriend.

I loved the idea, so I got in touch and offerred to do it for free. It was someting I'd never done and I look at that as something that benefits me as much as the client.

I have since shot the couple's wedding, their trash the dress shoot and two new born shoots for their friend's.

Scott.

 13.
Hi All, I have searched for an answer, but can't find one. If you know of another discussion on this topic, please point me in the right direction.

I have only been using lightroom for about 2 months, but I am already in love with it. It has cut down my post processing time significantly. (I'm changing to Mac in about a month, but think I'll stick with Lightroom)

I am trying to export two copies of the same set of images. One in colour and one in black and white.
To do this, I am exporting the colour set to a folder after adjustments are made and then resetting the images in lightroom and running a B&W preset on the same originals before exporting to another folder.

Now, if I want to go back and export a batch for web or something else, I no longer have my export ready colour images. I have had to import the folder that I had already exported (hope that's not too confusing!).

Am I missing something really obvious here?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Scott.
