I have had great luck shooting portraits with the same humble Cannon 50 - 1.8 that is mentioned. If you have it, you off to a great start. I would also look for another prime lens in the 100mm range. You will get sharper images for less money/weight than using a zoom lens. Check out what can be done with a Cannon 50 - 1.8

I have finally gotten my act together enough to participate in my first art festival and I have what seems to be
a common question for any artist, what do I print my work at. The type of work that I have is
Digital 8X12
Unmounted,
Mounted,
Matted,
1 Digital 20X30
Mounted and matted
Black and White silver prints
8X10
Unmounted,
Mounted,
Matted,
11X14
Unmounted,
Mounted,
Matted,
Some of my sliver prints of both sizes are also sepia toned.
Any advice would be helpful and appreciated.

I use Costco quite a bit as well. They are near by and have great prices. The caveats with Costco are the same as
all chain stores, the quality has a lot to do with whose behind the counter. Downloading and using their posted
printer profile is ideal. You are morel likely to get what you are looking for. I have always had good luck when
there are mistakes. They have always re-printed them for free and fixed the error. Once the altered the order for
me even when the mistake was that I checked Glossy instead of luster. I actually like their paper quality better
than some online sources I have tried.
Good luck

All excellent advice. Thank you all. I did have a chance to shoot a show about a year back, I will try and post some pics to get some feedback in the next few days. I am interested in both promo shots and live coverage. Any suggestions on technique.

I have finally hit a point where I know what kind of photography I want to
pursue. I enjoy shooting live music and want to begin doing band promo shots. My
current equipment list, canon XT, 18-55mm canon (kit lens), 100-300mm tamron,
50mm f/1.8 canon. My question is what should be next on my list to purchase. I
am looking at the Canon speedlite 430 flash, and a canon 100mm f/2.0. Am I on
the right track?? I apologize if this is not in the right section.
