  1. Thanks, Chris for tackling this issue for some shooters who record that kind of continjuous focus action. ( Plan to stick with one camera system at a time) With some Lumix related gear too. I 'thinkl I understand what you said but I am sorry if still get lost in the manual as to where to set the focus for center point pr nine points. and I honestly am not sure I am on board yet. Sorry. Continuous L- what is that for example? Do we use AEL/AFL lock button configured how? YEah,Slow learner or not enough time with this multiplex button /lever /multi tasking machine.....with a crappier manual than I imagined m by this day.... Can you actually walk this here admittedly apprentice EM1- shooter through the steps-?. Do I need to go to gears menu? for some settings or just SCP? Where do I make this change? Do I need to construct a pattern smaller than center multi- point focus I currently use, such as spot focus to force phase detect. Since Elliot has got it done, I guess he is more proactive with his camera.....I shoot in S AF w MF and center weighted icon. Specifically what buttons, levers and menu segments do I need to set up for this faster C AF? I too might like to assign same like you to a custom Myset on the mode dial. Maybe it is a matter of terminology got mr....when you get time, no rush. This is the kind of dope we all need that is not in the huge but fuzzy wuzz manal. No, David Busch tries in his book but not that much practical advice given there. We need more sharing of tips and tricks and efficient ways to set up this camera. Even if we choose variations, better to know where to find them and how to access them......Good shooting and mahalo to you for being a helper. Contrast detection has merits and I think we are getting close to best of both focus styles, sooner or later....beats manual in a dark gym...for sure, - have had latest firmware installed btw. Not any camera can be the ultimo cream de la creme of photo tools but pretty darn nice for what I do. And the fast zooms are a revelation, I went with Panasonic X fixed aperture..a high investment of sorts....but they work well on Oly micro cams and are sharp as hens teeh or a samurai sideburn:_).   3. Out of focus bug is not improbable, per Christoph suggestion, Amber. Anecdote: My wife was looking at yellow and then brown streaks on our outdoor CCTV camera. Came and went and took all kinds of abstract patterns. After some thought, and given that we have a series of infrared lights near the fixed lens closed circuit camera she decided it was a curious insect. Are they attracted to the little red lights, who knows? We have a few bugs living out there. I would not sweat it though. Or think in terms of paranormal stuff.....
  4. Or, I am wondering if a camera like the OMD-EM1 could be set up in a time lapse mode and moved in an arc and then combined in post processing. I am sure there is one way to bone a chicken. This may be a great place to talk to someone in the video department. They are the innovators nowadays.
  5. Hanging on to the propaganda theme, which is kind of interesting, Dick and Lannie and Fred. If propaganda means spreading lies or biased information or images that are designed to manipulate and subvert something or publicize and make wholesome some cause that is inherently negative, then photojournalism especially during the wars is pure propaganda. If it is to promote a good cause,then it is still a kind of propaganda loosely defined, or even public relations or PAO stuff. I do not see that in the work of most -I say most od- the New Deal photographers or artists, nor even on some of the Federal Arts Program plays like 1/3 of a Nation, Spyrochete, or the work of movies and images of the CCC with Roosevelt in his convertible handshaking the dollar a day workers. Although it is currently of a fashion ( in revisionist quarters) to denigrate anything paid for by the feds as inherently skewed towards a bigger government intervention. An argument can be made, agreed. This would mean that anything Hearst promoted was free and unbiased and unequivocal and....you call it by what name you choose. And same today for anything distributed by the Murdoch syndicate paper-TV empire. I guess it is a kind of conundrum, if that is the right word. To me. a photo has to be Orwellian and sinister to be really over the mark in this category. Now the House Unamerican Activities committee took a different view and also had an agenda so we have a precedent for "stretching." But here of course we wander into the philosophy of the arts and photo arts including journalism and documentary. Is "On the Waterfront" propaganda, or just a powerful sign of the times.. How about "Grapes of Wrath?"..I would hesitate to be sure either way. Meaning I can't get a grip on pure propaganda, benign propaganda and Joseph Goebbels'/ Orwellian described propaganda in his Ministry of Truth. Toughie. PS: I got the show on DVR and just need to set aside two hours, maybe tonight. Admirer of the work for years.
  6. Interesting that her photojournalism was supported by a federal agency, Farm Security Administration. And later by Henry Luce's Life magazine. Nowadays with tight agency budgets and only tabloid press at large which keeps up with Miley Cyrus and the Kardashians, there are less of such traveling social photojournalist commentators who can earn a living or get the same kind of respect. Same for the plain reporting side of things in essay form. That includes the loss of wide progressive leaning national publications (McClures at one time). There are a few left, but some are just hanging by a thread. PBS specials, e.g. Frontlline, does a fair job within limits. National Geographic which is still solvent has picked up some of the slack too. Show on D.Lange is on my watch list for tonight.
  7. To close the loop on my post, let me report that the turnaround from Connecticut Service Center was one week. I call that good. They also were generous enough to return it by free two day UPS delivery vice ground which must be their standard shipment modality. The invoice said main circuit board replacement, check and test and upgrade to firmware. I found the camera to be in good shape again knock on wood. Though with the complexity of functions to mess with, I felt it worthwhile for peace of mind to buy the extended warranty. Latter was on sale from Oly store for about 65 dollars.... But is also available at good value from B and H( my old standby source for cameras and accessories). It gives me two extra years on an expensive piece of kit, which will take me months to put through all its paces. Yep. I kid you not..I am slow leaner I think....gerry

Barry, if it helps answer your question, all my Olympus flashes work in all TTL modes, , and other communication functions workk as well with my Panasonic Lumix GH2 (with the exception of my quite old FL 20 which only works in AUTO on the Panasonic, can't say why....) I would be surprised if the Olympus flashes would not work with any hot shoe equipped Panasonic and with full functionalityl. Lumix cameras have communication capability with Olympus flashes and would bet on it. I note that some of the Panasonic model flashguns look identical to Oly; even the numbers are similar. That said, before you buy, guess I'd also check this out with someone who sells them or a big online vendor. There is a compatibility list around too, but I have lost the URL. I have heard, along with others, that Panasonic actually manufactures the Olympus flash line. Anyone know for sure?

  10. Glad it is useful and I will try to forage and post whenever I spot something. I found a couple crib sheet forms for setting all the parameters of the E-M1 which may be helpful. In PDF format posted by Godfrey on Four Thirds Forum, one blank and one a sample filled in. Your settings may not be as the sample, but will save time trying to remember terminology and stuff.   11. Seem relatively active there. Has sub forums on each E camera model including the late ones, such as EM-5 and EM-1. I found a question answered that I had wondered about relating to the selection of autofocus points in one of the Q and As. I mention it as another source of shared wisdom from our global partners. The manual seems to have everybody blindsided on some topics as we appreciate. Like there are alternate ways to do stuff and sharing info may be useful on how to accomplish stuff with least effort. If you have found any really solid ones let us all know. I have, incidentally been real happy with RRS baseplate quick release for the E-M1. A winner which stays on camera like it was welded on. Reports on the vertical piece that bolts on and makes it a virtual L plate are mixed. I did not buy it, since it may not allow ready access to the rubber covers on the side ports...but the base plate, Arca Swiss type is great. Also has a threaded hole in the center aligned to lens. Tell bridal chorus you will try to to do a couple, maybe suggest get together and select three of those in B and W to go to color and of course charge them for the extra service....not contracted for I presume. Charge sufficient to cover your time and workmanship OR farm it out to some other bloke who loves computer fiddling as a subcontractor is another wild thought..why not? if you are booked up... I shoot in color JPEG and don't find it too hard to do a fair job converting to B and W. Reality is that a wedding photographer is a hired gun not your artist /aesthete alas, part of the production cast of a wedding company and definitely in a 'service industry.' Talk to folks who work in LA in film production..... To oblige is the name of the game from my limited involvement. Make it pay via your rate and contract terms. . Could you let them decide which color shots to be converted, and limit same? Some will be better .Jeff has an approach,- does that sound like the answer....be well and prosper.
