    Ice

          9

    Hi

This picture reminds me of autumnal trekking in the mountains, when the first snow falls and the night temperature falls below 0 Celsius. I can almost feel the distinct smell of soaked marsh and the wet cold air. There is no wind and there is rain in the air (but it's not raining).

I think you have described this moment very well. It is spring time now, but for a moment you got me long for the autumn.

Not very important, but technically there are some chromatic aberration that is pretty easy to remove with the right tool (green line along the mountain ridge and magenta along the farthest water line). It will at the same time remove some green and magenta color cast in the terrain of the distal mountain slope.

    A nice picture.

    Cheers,

  1. The church including interior and glass paintings was designed in the

50's by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The words on the

altar translates to "He receives sinners". I put it under the architecture

category only because I am forced to select a category, but if it was

up to me I would prefer not to designate a category to it, just leave it

as it is to the viewer. Thoughts and comments are welcomed and

    appreciated.

    Hi Jorge,

I have been looking into your "Mundo Animal" portfolio and I really like the tight cropping in your animal pictures, just like it is in this picture of a lurking croc.

    Best wishes for 2013!

P.s. I believe that you can dig out some extra sharpness and clarity in this photo if you want to, and if you have the right tools. The challenge is of course not to sharpen the noise (in Photoshop layer masks and high pass sharpening will do a pretty good job).

  2. Hi Daniel,

The fish net in the foreground makes me think that the two people behind the net are catching or about to catch fish. From their figures, including the hats on their heads, I expect that we are in South-East Asia somewhere.

As a documentary image I miss a connection between what the image shows and what is actually being documented. If it is about villagers on the South-East Asian countryside catching fish, then a fish in the net, or one of the two people throwing a net or carrying fish, or a bucket filled with fish, or something else in that direction would make the image telling more precise what is going on, and not leave it to the observer to decide.

Hope this is of any worth!

    Best wishes for 2013!

    Ice and water

          3

A small stream that is about to freeze completely to ice. To me it

almost look like it's made of silver and crystals. Any comment, positive

or negative are appreciated. Best wishes for 2013!

  3. Hi Olexander,

It looks like a flight from misery ;-) (assuming you have just left the Evensk airport flying to the right out over the Sea of Okhotsk)

I have been in the neighborhood, in Magadan in 1997. We were 4 people canoing the Omolon river, from its springs down to the "city" of Omolon. All the people we met were very kind and hospitable. The whole trip took two months (from Norway back to Norway).

In contrast to the cityscape in your picture, the natural wilderness with its rivers, plains and mountains is breathtaking beautiful. It is my guess that you only have to walk half an hour or even less to reach out there from this place.

    Best wishes for 2013!

    Orchid

This is an African orchid species. This individual however, was

photographed in the Botanical Garden of the University of Oslo's

    Natural History Museum.

    Amaryllis

          1

An amaryllis, white as snow, and in B/W. Amaryllis is fun to work with

because of their soft forms and tones and their large stamens. Any

comments and thoughts are appreciated. Best wishes.

    Palm leaf

          3

Hi Gregory, and thank you for your comments, not only 2 cents worth I think, at least not to me ;-)

I see you have the same thoughts as I have, and I agree with you to some extent. I was however unsure whether to do anything about the spots (which I am almost sure are spots after falling water drops in this very damp environment). Maybe I should at least have removed the leftmost one since it is more disturbing than the others (there are quite a few drops there). However, I decided to just leave them there to see if anyone commented on them (as you did) and I also think they might add a more natural feeling to the image (but realize they might be just too disturbing for that).

The highlights are unrecoverable since the camera I used here only shoots JPG. We are actually approximately 10 meters above ground here, high up in the palm and tree crowns, and the back light is the sky over Copenhagen, so I just left it as is as I thought it gave a more natural feeling to the image as opposed to a more abstract approach of patterns and colors. I could have cropped it away, partly or in whole. This will inevitably make the "arch" much more dominant, but that is not necessarily a minus. I have tried a few, and I like some of them. They all make the image more abstract though, again not necessarily negative, but it gives another picture ;-)

Again, thank you for commenting my picture. I appreciate that! I hope you don't think I am opposing your thoughts in any way. I just wanted to "fill inn" with my thoughts. ;-)

Best wishes (and I hope my English is not too under-educated ;-) )

    Palm leaf

A single palm leaf from the Palm House in Copenhagen Botanical

Garden. This garden is well worth a visit even in winter time. But what

about the image? Any thoughts are welcome. Best wishes.

    Bone dry artichoke

          5

I appreciate your comment. Thank you! (It is really a dried artichoke flower bud) ;-)

The background is a polished granite surface (actually a granite table top). It is out of focus due to a relatively large aperture, f/2.4 in this case. This also gave the slight vignetting that I think suits the photo.

The only thing that is "manipulated" here is the picture's frame ;-)

My guess is that Pierre meant that he would have moved the camera a bit backwards so there would be more "air" below the lower two leafs.

I agree in that, and maybe I would have taken the picture in portrait format (turn the camera 90 degrees). I think portrait format would have worked better together with this motive. This is however much a matter of taste, so I can only suggest that you experiment with these things to find out what you think gives the best result. You have a nice and simple motive there for experimenting with both perspective and lighting.

The lighting and contrast on the leafs is good, showing the texture of the leafs very well.
