While photography was not a priority on this trip to St. Lucia, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to put my stamp on the iconic view of the Pitons on the south end of the island. This is a late afternoon image, with a humid haze in the air. I hung out at this black sand beach, volcanic in origin, as the clouds and peaks took on the warm glow near sunset. f16,, polarizing filter, ISO 320, f16, 1/8 sec.© copyright Harry Lichtman

One of those evenings that goes in the memory books. Lake side in Patagonia's Los Glacier National Park in Argentina as post sunset glow filled the sky while this lenticular cloud hovered above Cerro Torre, the needle like peak at the foot of the glacier. The scale is difficult to comprehend, especially with a wide angle lens. Cerro Torre rises 8,144 feet above the lake. I took several photos is quick succession at various focal planes in case some of the bergs were blurred due to movement on the water. I opted for ISO 100, 2 sec. exposure, f16 to ensure enough overlap in focal planes should I need to merge. I ended up using 3 images - a primary exposure and the other 2 to "clean up" some slightly blurred bergs. Looking back, I probably should have selected a higher ISO (400) and a resulting faster shutter speed at f16 or even f11 or f13 to possibly get everything in one shot. Taken shortly after my WaterWorld image in Patagonia, this photo captured the 1st rays of the sun hitting Los Cuernos, the Horns. The sunrise quickly faded, but some soft colorful light was enough to highlight the sky and peaks. During my recent trip to Patagonia, I had few opportunities to photography the wind blown lakes as conditions were extremely calm by Patagonian standards. This was one morning when the winds whipped up enough surf to make things interesting. The classic Los Cuernos (The Horns) are in the distance, one of the most iconic mountain massifs in the world. I had wanted to get a couple of keeper shots of those imposing and dramatic peaks from the trip, and this was one of them. This is a predawn shot - I especially liked the water action in this one. While most might prefer the color version, I thought the conversion is equally dramatic and shows off the dramatic weather & wildness of the place. While the Towers and Los Cuernos (the Horns) receive most of the accolades in Torres del Paine National Park, the Valle del Frances was the highlight for me of the W trek. It is a wild section of trail along the Rio Frances (seen here), emptying into a magnificent alpine basin surrounded by high peaks and glaciers. I waited out rain and snow for this view as the storm cleared.I constructed this view from stitching 3 vertical wide angle images, each bracketed by 1.5 stops to ensure a solid dynamic range for each shot, as the clouds were intensely bright compared to the trees and rocks.© copyright Harry Lichtman

Passing storms normally bring strong winds to NH's alpine areas, but this evening was relatively calm and quiet. Nothing better than fresh snow at sunset for photography. The serenity of being alone under such pristine conditions is priceless to me. It was a long wait in the cold, but these fleeting moments make it worth it. Sunrise shot from a glacial lake and a popular day hike from the Franz Senn Hut. Fall doesn't give it the best lighting, but I was happy to see the view after a very foggy and windy afternoon the previous day. After about 1.5 hrs of hiking in the dark, a clear view was a welcomed view. f 16, single exposure.© copyright Harry Lichtman

Cloud and fog briefly gave way to some sun during the hike from Sulzenau Hut to Dresdner Hut in Austria's Stubai Alps, revealing this beautiful glacial lake and the surrounding peaks. The scene would have looked much different under bright sun, and I rather liked the mystery the moving clouds and fog lent to the view. The Sulzenauferner glacier and Fernerstube glacier are most prominent, R to L. The high peak is Wilder Pfaff.I used my hiking pole as a monopod as I often do when shooting on the go - didn't want to miss the lighting by pulling off my pack and getting my tripod. I have found that I am able to get very sharp images with the Canon 24-105L using the IS on the lens in this fashion given decent lighting. 2 horizontal images merged to take in the whole view.© copyright Harry Lichtman

I pass this field nearly every day, which is part of a larger conservation area in Durham, NH. A great place to walk the dog and sleigh ride in the winter. The foggy skies ruined my earlier photo attempts elsewhere, but the effect was perfect as I passed by these fields. I quickly set up near these lustrife and took a series of shots (for focal blending if needed). Another exposure was used for sky exposure. Windless conditions allowed for a relatively easy blend. f16, slight zoom.© copyright Harry Lichtman

Wilde Wasser Weg literally translates to wild water trail, and this stretch along the Falbesoner Brook lived up to its name. While there is really no trail, I followed the cascades for about 1/2 mile trying to line up various compositional elements such as the peak, falls, and lighting. This view best represented the dramatic landscape one might encounter near the Neue Regensburger Hut in the Stubai Alps. A 3 stop ND filter was used in addition to the polarizer to lengthen the shutter speed, as the water was being back lit by a sliver of sun breaking through the clouds. Innere Wetterspitze at 10,166 ft. makes a brief but spectacular appearance during sunrise near the Nurnberger Hut in Austria's Stubai Alps. A grand view from Austria's largest Natioanl Park. I think panoramas often suffer from the use of a wide angle lens, rendering near objects larger and far object smaller. Sometime this can work, but often the image loses the impact that drew us to taking the image in the first place. I find that zooming in a bit and taking a series of vertical images, later to be stitched, brings the impact back to a panoramic view. Distortion can be a problem so the images has to be taken with care. 10 images at f16.© copyrigfht Harry Lihtman

I found this tarn in the late afternoon and took some images with grazing sheep surrounding the alpine watering hole. I wasn't sure if the weather would hold until sunset, so I took several compositions earlier with plans to return toward sunset. The weather held just fine. I traveled over a high pass between the peaks in the distance to arrive at this idealic tarn and view of the Stubai Alps. This was part of a multi-day backpack in the Stubai Alps.I stitched 2 horizontal exposures, vertically to cover the entire view, as I didn't have my 17-40L on hand.© copyright Harry Lichtman

I looked for reflective water sources in the Bishop area to incorporate into images for some added interest. This was literally a drive-by shooting. I decided to head south out of Mammouth early one afternoon after seeing lenticular clouds forming while I was cross country skiing 50 miles north of Bishop. I saw the water pool from the highway, and composed using the wonderfully backlit scrub. I slipped under an opening in a barbed wire fence near the roadside - I obviously was not the 1st to photograph here.© copyright Harry Lichtman
