I also upgraded to a d300 from a d40. And I also wanted a good macro lens, but I chosed a cheaper way that may interest you.
I bought on ebay a used but like new 105 micro f/2.8 D (not the AF version, but an older one) manual focus for 125 Euros, and also a Nikon old 2x-teleconverter TC-20 for 30 Euros.
This cheap solution has provided my best rated pics here, lots of fun (manual focusing) and works fine in both bodies.
I know it´s not the best solution, but I think it´s a great one at the cost.

I have a problem trying to update my personal information:
We had some problems processing your entry:
You need to select security question
You need to type in an answer to security question
and I really don´t remember the question and answer I picked when I was joining this site several months ago. So
what can I do....? Will I remain without my personal info forever? or there is any way to update it?......
Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Maybe a nd (neutral density) filter should help. My favorite the ndx8 (8 times less light gets the lens). Hope to help
more than confuse :-)

I´m just a begginer like you, and also interested in nature. My choice was a used (but like new) nikkor 80-400 VR (about 1200$ on e-bay) , I´m very happy with it, as I can walk arround and get good shots without tripod. I know it´s not the fastest lens, but it´s lowweigth and let you walk for miles and use it handheld. (wich gives me lots of opportunities of great subjects). As I said my personal choice, adapted to my own way of shoting.....
Hope it helps you....

D40 Lenses
in Nikon
For sure, they will work. I own a D40 and a D300. Everything working on a D40 will work on a Dxxx (as you say not in the inververse way).... -
Hi Josemi, I agree with you. What you call COMPOSITION is just what I claimed in a) :-)

I´m a mature man (46), so 18 months ago when I bought my first camera (a Panasonic fz7), I was thinking only in a
device to get sharp (in the way a newbie understand it) photographs. But when you begin to learn (in my case
through the internet), Photography can be very addictive. So I begun to spend time and money on it, buying first a
d40 with some basic lenses, and now a d300 with some others, What a passion for my 46!.
As a newbie without any artistic background (I´m a matehematician), and no previous photo vices, I think I
have "discovered" some facts about photography I would like to share with you (sure only personal opinions)
a) It doesn´t matter what camera or lenses you can have, or places you can visit. The only important matter is the
way you "see" things around you!
b) Digital photography is (for me) a mix of two different steps,(and both can be equually funny) taking, and editing.
You must master some editing software to control the result of the first step.
c) The way people value a photograph is very subjective. The same photograph can have different ratings in different
moments and different webs. For instance, the same photo I can publish in onexposure.net ( a very restrictive place)
with very good ratings, can be ignored in flickr, ipernity or Photo.net, And viceversa, and any mix. So, to get an
accurated view on your work, you have to get as much different views as you can....
d) My last discovery...... My name is Jose and I am a photo-addict.....

Thanks Ronald. I also own a d40, so I´ll try with it!

I was wondering if I can get infrared pictures with a simple r72 on my d300, or if it can´t be achived because
the sensor filter... Did anyone try?

Well I?d been in photography for only a year, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
Technical issues are really important. A better quality lens can give you much, but for me, that 10 mm on my sigma
10-20 give me a chance to get compositions like the next and others in my photostream and that?s definitly enought
for my 350$
