Thanks guys! I've decided to end my Yashica quest before I go broke. :-) And I would love a Canonet, but they are so insanely overpriced right now.

I am beginning to think I am cursed to an eternal fate of never having a functional Electro GSN. After buying a broken one on eBay, buying a replacement, losing my first test roll, and then Walmart losing my most recent test roll, my latest problem is really irritating.
I went to load a THIRD test roll into my Electro, and found that though the shutter button would press down all the way, it would not actually open the shutter, and the film would therefore not be able to advance. I have seen the shutter work perfectly* in the past, so why it won't now is beyond me. The batteries are good, meter is good, everything seems fine, except it won't open the shutter, and thus I can't load any film.

*I've watched it open and close, but of course, I've never had any results from it.

Don't tape the case shut! Random light leaks are fun!

Also, Holga long exposures can be really, really stunning. Take it out at night and use the bulb setting.

That is gorgeous, Jack. Where was it taken?

I seriously doubt you'll get mugged in most NYC neighbourhoods.

Patrick, I meant that the lab my Walmart sends out to will not do Kodachrome. I asked for a roll of E6 to be cross-processed, and it came back undeveloped with a list of services they don't offer.

This is a little off-topic, but the lab my WalMart sends to will not process Kodachrome or Super-8! Where are you from?

I agree with Shun, don't buy a new lens just yet. If you have to buy one, I would go with a macro of some sort, probably the Voigtländer.

Hi all,
I will be taking a vacation in Israel with my family this summer, and I would like a compact camera to bring. I own a Nikon D50, some lenses, and various film cameras. The D50 is small, but still larger than I would like to carry around for two weeks. I would like to focus more on the trip than the pictures. I also considered bringing my Yashica Electro 35, but it is not exactly small, and I would have to pack film. Not a great option either. So, I've been looking for a digital compact. The only one I have is an archaic (by digital standards) Sony 3.2MP brick of a camera. I do NOT want to bring that! ;-)
Something with a large sensor would be nice, preferably in a relatively compact body. Image quality is a priority. Zoom range really doesn't matter to me at all on the long end. I rarely use telephoto lenses on my SLR. For wide angles, I guess 28mm is wide enough, though 24mm would be nice.
I have been looking seriously at the Panasonic LX3 and the Canon G10. I also thought about the Sigma DP1 or DP2, and a prime lens is generally not a problem for me, but for travel purposes, I would rather have a zoom. I peeked at the Leica D-LUX 4, but the thought of paying more for a compact than I did for a DSLR makes me mildly ill.
Tl;dr: compact camera, wide angle ability, decent-sized sensor for vacation to Israel.

My Yashica Electro GSN is very quiet, but it's stuck with a (completely brillant) 45mm f/1.7 lens. That might not be the best focal length for concerts and plays.

-

Definitely the 11-16mm, and I would say the 35mm f/1.8. I think it depends on your shooting style. I don't do much shooting above 50mm (35mm equiv.), but that's me and not you, obviously. :P

I am way jealous of that 124G. Nice shots, also.

Henry is right; I use a Vivitar Auto 202 on my Holga with no problems.

-

Hi all,

I recently won a Yashica Electro on eBay, and it came with a Vivitar Auto 202 flash. I have no idea what year it's from, or anything. It seems pretty basic; just an exposure chart and an on/off switch. I was wondering if I could perhaps use it with my D50? I'm guessing the answer is no, due to some sort of voltage issue, but that's not really my forte at all, and surely someone here is more knowledgable. Thanks!

I also prefer 120 with a Holga. 35mm always looks dull and washed out (in a bad way) compared to the craziness of medium-format.

-

"Just print this page out, and you can't miss."

Hahaha.

I am fourteen, and I love shooting film. I've shot more medium format (Holga and Brownie Hawkeye) in the past few months than I've shot digital. And I recently bought a Yashica Electro GSN. So I know I am going to try my hardest to keep film alive.

-

I love mine. It's way cheap, ridiculously sharp, and best of all, tiny.

-

The D50 and 50mm f/1.8 is such a killer combo. Light, sharp, and less conspicuous than nearly any other DSLR.

-

My 120N has two apertures...

-

I'll leave the recommendations to the rest of you, but if you're going to buy a Holga, I would really recommend buying the most basic model, without the flash. Natural light photography trumps flash any day, in just about any situation.

A Kodak Cameo Motor 110 point-and-shoot, with 110 film I found in a dusty corner of Walmart.
