I'm a beginner too so take this for what it is worth. I have the 70-300, and it has been great for outdoor sports shots of my kids.

But I've tried a couple of times in an indoor soccer arena lit with florescent lites, and it just doesn't work - not fast enough. Check out the high marks the 70-200 (both IS and non-IS) at www.photozone.de.
