I'm confused - could you rephrase the question?

-

Two of the last three Canon lenses I purchased in the last month had no date code. 85 1.8 and 10-22.

-

I have tried a couple of different Gitzo ballheads, the Acratech ultimate ballhead, and Really Right Stuff ballheads. I sold the Gitzos; didn't care for the small plates and the action just didn't feel as smooth as the others. The Acratech felt much better in terms of quality and smooth movement of the ball. This is largely personal preference - but I am a huge fan of the RRS equipment. High precision and quality materials and workmanship - both the ballheads and the L-plates.

You can do an advanced search on eBay and see prices actually paid on completed auctions for the camera. (You have to be an eBay member to access this search feature.)

-

Just FYI I have found no free software that will do the shutter count for a 7D. I have on the other hand for the 5DmII.

-

Another vote for Understanding Exposure. Also, the books you already have sound like Scott Kelby's The Digital Photography Book (I and II). If not, I would recommend those.

There were a few posts like this in the last few weeks, and several made the suggestion of burying the camera in a bowl of uncooked rice for a few days, indicating that may absorb the moisture. I've never had this happen, but it's probably at least worth a try.

I need to begin taking videos of my daughter so she will have soccer clips for upcoming college recruiting. I know nothing at all about camcorders. I have Canon cameras with video capabilities (a 5D Mark ii and a 7D), but I have never used those capabilities. My basic question is whether I should use my cameras for this or purhcase a camcorder. Could someone educate me of perhaps the top five pros and cons of camera vs dedicated camcorder?

Not sure how much is "break the bank" but I would recommend 17-55 IS.

I'd encourage you to look at the reviews at photozone.de

-

Most Canon lenses have pretty good resale value, so whatever advice you take, the result isn't "permanent".

-

I like Mark W's response. There are plenty of images on-line taken by really talented photographers using 350D's, 400D's etc - that are better than any shot I have ever taken with my 5D mII. Unfortunately I haven't been able to spend myself into being a great photographer!

My opinion - in addition to various reasons others have articulated here, it depends on how good you are. I have both lenses, am an amateur, and have yet to master the skill required to properly focus the 85 1.2 wide open.

Smallest Gitzo like 0541 Mountaineer, and Really Right Stuff BH-25 Pro. Check me on this but I think the Kirk brackets are Arca Swiss compatible, which should mean they work with RRS.

For me - yes!

-

Go to reallyrightstuff.com and read their pros/cons of 4 vs 3 leg sections. It sums it up pretty well.

-

Consider the Gitzo tripods that have three legs if your concern is holding up to wind. That way the bottom section thicker relative to the four legged variety. I have the 2531EX and the 3530LS and am happy with both. Will tell you that the 3 series feels substantially sturdier to me. You asked about other brands - check out the new Really Right Stuff Versa. It's expensive - $925, but if it is built as well as their ballheads are it's worth a look.

-

Thanks Scott. Guess I could have gone to their website and figured that out... Much appreciated.

-

Noticed that some of the Acratech ballheads offer either left or right side knobs. But I can't figure out which side I'm supposed to get. I'm right handed.

-

Bob - yep I'm one of those with the 24-105 who will upgrade if they ever release it. I'd sure like the 2.8.

-

I'm baffled at why Canon doesn't put this lens out. Seems like, anecdotally of course, the non-IS version is one of the most popular L lenses. I've seen plenty of comments on this forum of owners of that lens saying they will upgrade if the IS version ever comes out. Easy money for Canon I would think.

-

Tobias - I'm not familiar with D3 in terms of size/weight. Gitzo says 0541 should handle a DSLR with a standard zoom lens. I use it with 7D and 5DmII (minus battery grips), prime lenses and a couple of different standard zooms without any problem. Never have had it out on a really windy day though to see how that would work.

-

I have this very setup - 0541 and RRS BH-25. Also have both lenses you mention. Not a sturdy enough setup for either lens IMHO.

-

RRS equipment descriptions say that the ballheads use Arca-Swiss style release systems and plates. Does that mean I could use my RRS L-plates on an Arca-Swiss ballhead, Acratech ballhead, or Kirk ballhead?
