1.
Hello,

I recently made a mistake of purchasing 100ft in bulk of Kentmere ISO100 film without testing it on a single 24 exposure roll. After developing for recommended time in Ilfosol3 1:9 @ 20C I discovered film to be pretty grainy :(

Any way of reducing grain during processing? I wanted to try
a) 1:14 dilution
b) different developer (Arista)

Any recommendation is appreciated.

 2.
Hello,
Just to share my experience with 220 film. Loaded per manual, on a "real" start line (not a dotted one). Everything seems to be Ok, camera after some cranking stopped at frame #1.
A couple of frames passed by. After frame #5 camera started to act like there's no film in the back - crank just continues to rotate (with film), frames counter stopped at position #5. Shoot. Looks like a mechanical problem with the "needle" which "sensing" the film presence (I'm not a big specialist on film back's mechanics). Got to the closet + "changing back" and rewound everything back to an original spool. Load the film back. Skipped 5 frames.
Only today I realized that when loading the film 2nd time didn't properly adjust the start line. :o( So, some double exposures are expected.
3.
Hello,

I have a strange problem with my (recently purchased) Epson V700. I use Epson Scan v3.24. I'm scanning medium format film (tested only with color negs, 6x4.5) using regular film holder.

The problem itself - a piece of scanned image looks scrambled starting at 1/6-1/5 of picture height from the top and affecting the whole width for approx 1/10 of the picture height when using ICE on lite settings (low
level) with resolution equal or more then 2400dpi (see the picture links). 1200dpi with ICE is Ok and I didn't test resolutions in between 1200-2400dpi.

Side note - scanning 35mm is not affected and also when using ICE on high result is Ok - although it takes approx 10 minutes per scan. Silverfast SE gives the same problem probably due to the usage of the same ICE processing modules.

The same behaviour is reproduceable on both my home computers (newer one Amd x2 with XP 64 bit 2GB RAM and on old Dell m700 laptop with some celeron and 1GB of RAM). However, VueScan results are not affected (sic!) in general although some strange lines are visible - white line on top and black on the bottom (a few pixels height).

Pictures:

1200dpi, no problem:
img017-1200dpi-ICELow />
2400dpi, with problem:
img018-2400dpi-ICELow />
Again, this only affects scanning 6x45 negs with ICE on low with Epson scan program with dpi >= 2400

Anybody seen that problem? Any suggestions?

My thoughts:

- if it were on every scan - I would probably blame hardware.
- most likely some issues with memory buffers while processing MF scan.

Thanks,
Andrey

 4.
OMG! Thanks to Andy for the topic.
I always wanted to start this conversation, but I never had enough material to present.
Firstly, Louis, thanks for the suggestion. That's something worth of looking at.
I got the scanner (V700) a couple of weeks back and was playing with it since then. So far, I'm more or less Ok with 120 negs scans (never tried on (+) settings though), 120 slides - even with (+) settings on the height adjustment - out of focus. 35 mm - tried on the default settings, results more or less Ok but still prefer my "old pal" Plustek 7200i :o) for scanning 35mm.
Robert, thanks for the idea - I had the same thoughs on "what I can do to try different height settings for the film holder".
5.
Hello,
I few questions on the subject of linear scratches on 35mm color negatives. Usually I process C-41 in commercial labs, primarily Costco but sometimes I use small shops. I noticed that it doesn't matter who does it for what cost ($1.50 - $5.00) I see long linear scratches going thru all the negatives (on the side of film base, other side from the emulsion). First, I wanted to blame the camera (Nikon F75/N75) but then noticed that a few B&W negs (processed manually? dip&dunk? - I have no actual idea - it was K&S @ Palo Alto, CA) are absolutely clean...
In most cases infrared scanning helps to almost completely eliminate them but sometimes scratches are visible even after applying "heavy" ICE settings.
What is that? Destiny of using cheap labs? May be it's a camera problem? Any experience with that situation?
Thanks,
Andrey
