1.
Scott,
Thanks again for your input. He specifically, by discipline, was not a photographer and it'd be safe to assume that it was his camera by the nature of many of the pics.
On the part about ownership of the equipment that you bring up, I have an issue with the local tax assessor that is contradictory to "ownership" of equipment. If my tax assessor walks in and I have my personal items inside my place of employment, or on my company vehicle, then the company is deemed to be the owner and they will add the proper dollar amount to the company's inventory list so that it will be taxed accordingly. (Basically they are reaching out for every possible tax dollar they can get) Working inside Controlled Industrial Areas that can make getting personal items back out a challenge at times....more paperwork. Yes I go on military bases and have to get releases for items brought out, and the local tax assessor's have been given access to the bases for the ability to "spot check" the business license and inventory on companies providing services on these bases.

 2.
Brad, yes that is the question. I'd think that there is nothing to worry about, and I know there is no sensitive or compromising information in these. Some are candid with shipmates and some are action/ in the moment warfare; but nothing really gross and graphic. I have been to meetings with the military and I'm often amazed how childish some of these things turn, and just want to prepared. I have seen the um....private allocation of Gov't property from those within the military and figure that might turn up as well(1 out of 1000 chance).

 3.
So, while going thru stuff that was found in my wife's childhood home, I was awarded a box of camera stuff. Mainly slides that were from the 1950's to early 1970's. I scanned them and while the extended family was gathered I made the images available for all to see. Many requested copies, and I have dutifully supplied in whatever format they wanted. In this stuff was a group taken by my wife's father when he was in the Mekong Delta as an adviser (1966-67) in the small boats squadrons. I find a few of these quite good and I have had a couple printed 20" on the long side and they hold up well. We live in a NAVY town, and incidentally the small boat guys are a client of mine. I have thought about gifting a couple of prints to these guys, and additionally actually showing them at a local art show and maybe perhaps one of the local watering-holes during the various reunions that happen, and giving credit to my deceased father-in-law, and noting his rank / unit at the time. So my question is do you think that since he was there in the military, that the military may see these and claim they have ownership? Currently I feel that my wife is the current owner of the image and I am just the caretaker.

 4.
OK, made it here! I'm getting ready to go out to the major spots, Louvre, Eiffel Tower, etc today. Definitely smoggy, but it is what I got.
Last night on the walk in from dinner; just the lowly point-n-shoot supported on a light post...
5.
Again, thanks for all the responses. I am staying with the current kit, but will add the 8-16 Sigma, David Manzi, and will throw in my Gorillapod for many of you. And Dan South your list of stuff is a great reminder/checklist and is what normally resides in my camera backpack. and my laptop, IF I take it, does have a built-in card reader.

Thanks again to all!

 6.
Thanks for all the responses!

Stephen, I'd love to take a tripod, but just don't want the bulk. Most places I'd want to use it, it would be not allowed I fear.
Wouter- I may throw in the 50 f1.8, I mean that's not too much overkill, and the 15-85 does have IS.
Colin- By train and foot in the cities. I expect the fast primes to be the ticket in the dark places, and a polarizer for the train ride thru the alps as I will attempt shooting thru the glass if I have to although I don't expect much from that other than a "snapshot."
Charles- We plan on doing a lot of walking and wandering, with very little structured appointments. We have a reservation at the Sistine Chapel, See the sights and find a cafe for wine and cheese and enjoy; take a picture here and there.
David- 12 x 16's may indeed be the best I can do and that's fine. I'm not getting paid for the pics I taking, just good mementos.
And to elaborate further....

I do know that 24 x 36 is asking a lot, but I usually come away with 1 that will print that size, although most would be smaller; just stuff for me and my honey to hang at our offices and she wants some new stuff for the bathroom we just renovated......hmmmmm I shouldn't think too much on that one.
I have the following items that I could take, but I have dismissed most of them as just being more than I want to carry around...
Not Taking a 7D, EF- 70-200mm f4l IS, EF100 f2.8; EF 300 f2.8. or any external flashes.
Have considered and felt it was overkill to take the EF- 50 f2.5 macro and EF 85mm f1.8. Bought a Sigma 8-16 a while back thinking I'd take that, but I just don't think it will fit into my plans.
My Sigma 30mm f1.4 it's hard to leave at home, but I'm trying to cut bulk and weight where I can. I'm almost tempted to go with 3 primes but the 15-85 IS is so darn convenient and the picture quality is great.
7.
OK, I am traveling to Paris France, Florence and Rome Italy in the next few weeks; NOT Paris Texas, Florence South Carolina and Rome Georgia. I am taking my Canon S95 pocket camera and a T3i with the following lenses.....A Sigma 20mm F1.8 and a canon EF-s 15-85.....DO you recomend anything else?
I am going on a pleasure vacation, and not a photo only trip. I will anticipate a few printed to 24 x 36 for the walls....
8.
DeLoyd,
There were times when the 200 was not enough, but I was able to crop enough to satisfy me. The shot above was at a resort (169mm fl), and that bird was very tolerant of humans, I'm sure some feed him although the resort claims he is wild. In other areas I could hear the wildlife and get a glimpse, but not sure that more reach would have gotten the picture due to the dark, dense foliage. I'm sure that I could have put a longer lens to use, but personally did not want to lug another lens around. I don't remember mounting the 1.4x. I was often in rainforrest areas and just didn't want to loose a stop, or open the camera to risk ingesting moisture.
Beautiful country with very friendly people.
The picture I hope to attach was in a national park about 2/3 of the way from San Jose to Liberia. It was taken at 200mm and there was no getting closer. It works though as there are 4 toucans in the tree.
9.
I like Marcus's suggestion.
I went a couple of years ago and took a 50D with a Tokina 12-24 f4, ef 35 f2, 70-200 F4 IS, and a 1.4 x. My most used lens was probably the 12-24, with the 70-200 a close second. I kept my stuff light and hiked a lot with all of it. The 35 f2 was used in low light and at night with some success with a flashlight. I was there on vacation and didn't want to burden my girlfriend with me and ALL of my stuff. I didn't want to carry my EF 100 f2.8 and the 70-200 too but the macro would have been nice.
What did I really miss from home? A true macro lens. I've done 2 things to remedy that. So I picked up an ef 50mm f2.5 Compact macro and a S95 camera, that does macro pretty good, to stuff in a pocket.
I've revamped my lenses from my experience to something close to what Marcus suggests and think that would serve you well. I did find that by going to some of the gardens and wildlife preserves and other places hiring a guide that the chances at getting good wildlife shots goes up dramatically.
10.
Great shots all!
Mine is from the meteor shower last weekend. No background as I was too lazy to drive the half-hour South. It did beat the heck out of the last several for me, as rain, overcast and even a full moon (I think) got in the way on the 3 or 4 previous ones. I also left home and forgot the manual film camera I'd planned to take.
Rich

00axg1-500879584.JPG.a299bda6613755ffcbd58422bd3792f3.JPG

 11.
Great shots to all!
Frank, I've got a shelter dog that has takien several years to get to a relaxed state with me; but it's worth it.
I was able to shoot a macro of a flower about the house right after some rain this past weekend.
