    Dorian Gray

          29

Thank you so much for your comment.

Actually, I never intended to deceive : I thought this portrait of Beckett is so famous, that it could not confuse people.

This mural has been there for years in Portobello road, London, and have been so used to see it, it was the first time I realised the state of decay of this wall.

I like to play with titles of the photos and often like to name my photos with a title disconnected from the "obvious" narrative of the photo. But this is not because I'm trying to confuse people, it is more an attempt at trying to open some other dimensions of looking at a photo, and opening the imagination when we look at a photo.

When I realised that perhaps people didn't always recognised Beckett, I left a little "hint" in one of my comments, but for me, nanming this photo Dorian Gray, was actually an attempt to share a personal view about Beckett's work : He may be decaying in this wall, we start to forget how he looked like as a human beeing, but his work is still with us, still presented in theaters and read by millions of people.

** edit : for the story, the last time I was on Portobello, I discovered that this facade has been painted over, and this monitor rendition is one of the few last renditions of this particular "hommage" left. I'm wondering how this one will now decay and age ...

    Thank you for answering !

I am just in the middle of your "Abstracts & Digital" and the amazing thing for me when looking at the whole serie is how you are tranforming liquids into solids and solids into liquids/organic abstractions ...

( back to look at your photos now )

  1. Meir,

Guess what : you are right : there are lots of dissimilarities.

But then there are also lots of similarities, and I could get on an on about similarities in this photo.

And this is in my opinion, exactly why this photo is very strong, and why you rate it much higher than you usually do : this is somehow about the complexity of life in general : Similarities and Disimilarities are always present together, and we can't never find one without the other.

Then in art and photography in particular, we always have troubles getting this whole aspect of life, and are drawn toward one of those two, because we can;t help but try to simplify life as a kind of reflex.

    John,

I hope you were a bit tired or not fully awake, ( depending the part of the word you are shooting these days ) when writing your 08:39 A.M message.

It is a very nice one, but certainly too nice : I may start to believe you on of these days

  2. Do you really need to post process again your old photos ? not sure : they are as they were done at the time, and succesfull as they are.

And keeping them will only show the progress done in time ( it never hurts )

That really is a very "brave" composition !! I just love it for the way it is suggesting the notion of time passing, especially as this looks like the only photo where a horse not running in your serie.
  3. "just not obvious to people who do not study photos of mine or others seriously"

Not sure how I should take that one ;-)

If that is in term of composition, the "V" shape of the man's finger framing the face are a similarity with the "V" shape of the woman's collar

I have to say your reference to "Educating Rita" is confusing me a bit : is that a reference to a particular scene, or to the narrative of the movie ?

Great game for a wednesday, btw

  4. Very difficult to "prefer" one or another. As he composition really is fantastic, both versions work very well.

Thing is they both evoke different feeleings, which is very interesting.
