1.
Equipment shows its true performance when it is chalanged by demanding circumstances. It realy doesn't make a lot of difference which car you drive up to your local mall but you will sure notice the difference once you start driving off-road or on the speedway.

 2.
Hi everyone! I decided to post this question in the PN forum before I go and pay 50 euro for asking the same at the Canon Service.
I was shooting an event on Saturday with my 40D + 580EX II when the battery ran out on the flash. I took it off to reload the batteries and in the mean time take a few shots using the camera's built-in flash but it would not open. I went into the settings menu only to find that the probable cause was that the camera had registerd that the external flash is still on!
Anyway, to make the story short, I finished the shooting (with the external flash) and afterward tried several times to open-close the camera and flash but the Menu Setting stayed permanently set as if the External Flash was on.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions, aside from the obvious 50 euro visit to the Canon Service?

 3.
Ton, the first association that came to my mind when I read your post was the brilliant TV advertisement for The Guardian showing the same street scene viewed from different angles and depicting a completely different story every time. For me this wonderfully portrays the essence of the “decisive moment” as well as its inherent relativity.

 4.
One of the PN members (Jelena Balic) had her photo "The Scream" used by a major corporation for a major add campaign after being sold to the company by someone else! Aparently her photo had been snatched from a web site, reprocessed (exif data, etc.) and submited to the company which finally used it. As I understand she now has a team of lawyers and is going through endless hassle trying to prove her rights.
Good luck Dave....

 5.
Some years back I spent 3 days hiking on Kilimanjaro snapping away my mothers "Idiot Camera" (film) before I realized it was actually empty. Unfortunately at that time they still hadn't invented the "Imbecile Camera" which would have been more appropriate for someone as ignorant to photography as myself.

 6.
As far back as I can remember most people were obsessed with equipment. Whether it was HiFi, Cars, Sports, Computers, Photography…. you name it! The fact is that most people much more enjoy the process of planning and preparation than the actual action.

The fact is better equipment DOES increase your performance. To a small extent of course, but enough to give the person a false feeling that he is closing the distance between him and the pro / artist / whatever and all this with minimum effort. This satisfaction lasts only until the moment he actually gets the gear he wants and then usually the fun is over.

I think it’s totally useless discussing these things or even better trying to convince someone he should get off his butt and actually do something.

 7.
Being new in the field of visually expression I tend to be drawn to a photo first of all by the content and the message. I know what I like and sometimes I even know why. That is the case when I will leave a comment which extends beyond a mere "I like it".
Since I am often unsure about the technical side as well as the aesthetic theories that underlay a certain photo I will many times refrain from commenting on the actual execution of a certain idea.

 8.
My motives for starting were purely egoistical. 3 years ago I was the Sales Manager for a cruise company and the owner wanted to produce a new brochure. Photos were taken by a "renown" painter / photographer and in my opinion they were absolutely..... which I bluntly expressed to my boss and the artist who cynically replied: "Well why don't YOU show us how to do it!
So I went out that afternoon, bought a Oly E-500 kit, 4 books on photography, visited some web sites (that’s how I stumbled upon PN), made a few phone calls to pro friends and 3 days later went cruising. Finally most of the brochure and web photos selected were mine.
My biggest gain from the story is that I got interested in photography as a craft and in visual expression in general.
