1.
In Florida it is common to see anhinga with outstretched wings drying their feathers - but this one was just about to take off. EOS 7D2 + Tamron SP 150-600 @ 600mm; 1/250s @ f/8 ISO 1600, handheld.

  2.
Great pics, as usual, from the MiN photographers! No snow in Florida so here are some chinstrap penguins on Orne Island singing in their snowy environment.

    Iceberg ahead!

Thanks David, just one shot. It's a rather hit and miss affair trying to judge when the camera is exactly half in and half out of the water. Even small ripples on the surface can make a big difference; I have a couple of shots where you can only see the top of the mast of the ship because of small ripples.

    RV Ushuaia and iceberg

Thanks Peter - Antarctica is an amazing place, especially for photography. Jumping into the ice cold water is way outside my comfort zone so I took these pictures by hanging over the side of a zodiac and just submerging the bottom half of my camera in the water and shooting blind. I took lots and lots of shots and ended up with a few keepers.

    Iceberg ahead!

Thanks all for your encouragement. I wanted to take some different pictures on my trip to Antarctica and planned to try and photograph the icebergs above and below not really knowing how successful I would be. It is a rather hit and miss affair - out of 400 shots, I have about 10 keepers; this is my favorite one.
  7.
Thanks Laura for the links - it is interesting how DNA sequencing is consolidating species that were once thought to be individual based on morphology. I was just sorry I didn't come across any during my recent visit.

  8. Today, Jan. 20th, is Penguin Awareness Day. Penguins are delightful birds of the southern hemisphere - their comical antics are most entertaining. Unfortunately penguins face an uncertain future - global climate change is thought to be diminishing krill populations, their main food source. Outside of Antarctica penguins face challenges from habitat loss. To celebrate Penguin Awareness Day post a penguin picture.

  9.
Despite recent reports of some "little brown mushrooms" discovered on an island off the Antarctic Peninsula I did not manage to find any for all the mycophiles at MiN. DNA analysis revealed that they were Galerina antarctica, a fairly common but extremely poisonous mushroom. However, there are about 20-odd species of macro-fungi that have been reported to exist in the Antarctic, according to the British Antarctic Survey. In addition, there are about 100 species of mosses, 25 species of liverworts and upwards of 400 species of lichen. So, for your delectation, here are some colorful examples I found on Deception Island - I've no idea what they are or whether they should be there!

    Iceberg ahead!

Hi Peter, the trick is to wipe a thin film of clear shampoo over the Perspex dome of the underwater housing. The plastic surface is very hydropobic and water beads up; shampoo (or any detergent) makes the surface hydrophilic and water just spreads to a very thin layer that is invisible.

    Desdemona

The cargo ship Desdemona had a tragic end to her life, being run aground on 9th September 1985 while on a trip from Comodoro Rivadavia. En route from Ushuaia to Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, loaded with cement, the Desdemona suffered engine failure and was deliberately beached to prevent loss. Then it had a fire that resulted in its permanent abandonment. She is listed as being built in 1952 in Hamburg and she is now accessible at low tide from Cabo San Pablo, Tierra del Fuego. She also ran aground two years earlier (6/9/1983) at Mar de Ajo, Argentina.
