This will not answer you question directly but is some information, I hope you find useful.

I currently run a Google campaign and have done some research considering FB as an additional advertising source. The CPC for FB is in line. However there billing procedure strikes me as a bit odd. They can bill you daily or how they deem fit. You cannot get the info until you build your ad and get ready to submit it. You can also target Google ads to hit FB - I think at this point I'm going to stick with Google.

I also have a fan page on FB and its linked from my site and use it to post current shoot images for people to view as teasers til their images are done.

I'm not sure I want FB charging my credit card daily....can't put my finger on it....just doesn't seem right.

Congrats and I hope all goes well.....

@ David - Thanks for the info, I really enjoyed the overall experience. 1 gal bought like 5 prints of her boy flying off the ice and was running around showing them to everyone it was quite gratifying.
I'll look into that software.

@ Glenn - Thanks for commenting, I finally did turn the VR off, it still had some issues the focus wouldn't lock properly...something wrong in the lens...but none the less it was a good time and I got some good stuff. As far as white balance...I never really do that, I always fix in Raw...after the couple of practices I went to...I decided that would be the best course of action but the images seemed a bit to blue to me. I'm sure operator error on my part. The next time I will address it long before time to shoot the real stuff.

I'd like to start by saying thanks to those who post here...I spent quite a bit of time lurking before I shot this Youth Hockey Tournament. So I learned a lot in the short amount of time I had to prepare.

So I'd like to relate my experience.

I was interested in shooting some youth sports and got approached by the local team to shoot their tournament.

I accepted without fully researching what it entailed... (Risky for sure)

I got the schedule - 2 games Friday, 4 games Saturday, Finals Sunday

Real Schedule 2 games Wednesday (this was supposed to be my 3rd practice), 4 Games
Friday, 8 Games Saturday, and Finals on Sunday

So needless to say...way more hours than I anticipated...No biggie though my excitement level was huge.

Equipment - D300 - 2 SB600's on stands either end of the rink trigger by cybersyncs - 70-200, 2.8VR, Sony Dysub printer, Laptop w/large monitor, 3 cards, misc stuff, lots of batteries.

So here are the issues...

1. lighting in the Arena is old and horrible... Flash helped... struggled to maintain a constant white balance - fixed most of those issues in Raw
2. Lens was rented from the Lens Depot, I have rented enough from them to buy 1, never a problem. Lens came early and I did not make time to test it...My fault... VR was off...it started dancing all over the place. It worked intermittently...So I way over shot to compensate. 50 to 60 images (or more) per period. I called them today, they are sending another free of charge, the next time I need it...great response, I have no issues with them.
3. All editing done via Bridge and PS - Now I'm gonna breakdown and buy Lightroom - It was really insane, the amount of images.
4. This is related to #2 and #3, hours of editing has been horrible do to the over shooting to get enough sharp images. Not being able to get enough images for the parents to see in a timely manner. We did sell some and took a lot of orders so it will work out in the end ( I hope)

Overall... I have great respect for those of you that do this work all the time, I was (am) still physically and mentally exhausted. Again I would like to say thanks for the info. Education is expensive no matter how you get it and I got a load of it in 3 days. Would I do it again? Absolutely...just better prepared. The parents were ecstatic...they loved the shots...I am a bit disappointed, I know what that lens is capable of, first hand. I am super critical of images that are not tack sharp...

Sorry it's so long, but any comments would be greatly appreciated.

You can go to my site and there is a printable PDF for under the Pricing Tab...

Hope this Helps

Thanks Edward..
I was approached to shoot some local youth Hockey and am trying to figure out what the best/least expensive route to go is...If it turns out to be something bigger. I will have no trouble investing in the right equipment...this might just be just a one time deal...

Thanks Tim,
I did read that...

I did a search and really couldn't find what I was lookin' for...

Does anybody have or used both of these printers at sporting events, such as youth hockey etc... If so which model and how is the quality..

Also if you use either, do you print from your cards or do you run them through LR or PS, prior or do whatever correcting with the on board printer software.

B & H has both and the pricing is right for both machines and cost per print.

I appreciate your time and responses.

The amount of sharpening required...is somewhat dependent on the original image size and it's sharpness to start with....
Did you go look at my blogger page?

-

I upload via the blogger tool with no issues -

Common workflow from PS goes like this

- Flatten PSD, Convert Color Profile to SRGB, USM @ 40% 1.3 Pixels, Smart Sharpen @ 40% 1.3 Pixels, Resize to longest size to 800, @ 72DPI, bicubic sharper, save as JPEG.

Hope this helps

I'm sure they will get it out, just wanted to bring it to someones attention...figuring it shouldn't be there...
Matt, I wasn't gonna go there....but as usual well said.

That is from Firefox - v3.5.7

I use a Bamboo at home and an Intuios at the studio, the Bamboo is a little less sensistive and not quite as accurate...but it is so minimal if I didn't go back and forth I'd never know the difference.
The intuios has more programmable featurre as well...for whatever that might be worth?

The in Studio presentation does a couple things, gets your order right away which of course equals quicker cash flow. Gives you a second opportunity to develop a long term relationship with your client. It also gives you the best opportunity to upsell!
I tell them upfront we proof in house, call and set an appointment when the images are ready... then after the proofing and order, I give them their user name and password to the online proofing gallery and of course encourage them to give it out.
Sometimes they bring 3 or 4 other peeps with them, which is fine they will usually ad to the order.
There have been very few that just want to look at them online and you can try to persuade them with the Calibrated Monitor story (assuming you use one to proof) or whatever...I get very little to no resistance. Obviously if there is no other choice you do what the customer wants.
Congrats on the store front...

I've been using Mpix for the last year...for all my large orders...Images are spot on.

-

I use Simms - they are fingerless for flyfishing...but work really well....and yes sometimes the tips get a bit cold...

Google this "nikon creative lighting system tutorial" a pretty long list of tuts, etc... will be at your finger tips.

I have this scanner and have scanned 100's of slides and negatives. Alot of those have been printed up to 13x19. With good post skills these come out nice and clean. I just did a set of 4x5 negs shot back in the 20's, I'd guess. they were undated and the guy had no Idea just wanted prints made from them. Those were printed at 24 x 36 ish.. after crop etc... The were beautiful.
The neg and slide holders do require some patients to use.
I have not bought the "Betterscan" holders but have read a lot of good reviews about them. So it's probably on this next years list of things.

Firstly, well done. That's noise related to HDR processing. It could also result from over sharpening the final product.
What program are you using to create the HDR.

Sorta along the lines of the Gigapan Software...pretty slick.

Cool Josh... No more uploading in both places...
