1.
Thank you.
I can NOT extend it. That is what I said - the lock latch seems to work. But it does not do anything.
Lens does not extend and works ONLY as a 17mm prime.

I think I will take it for repair:
Question: I see an authorized repair shop
Photo Tech 360W 36th Street, New York, NY 10018
It is 1 block from my work. Can I take it there? Without contacting Sigma? Or is it better to deal via corporate entities? I bought it 3 years ago, and it is not under a warranty anymore.

  2.
I think, I have damaged my Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX for Nikon, while traveling
The lens would not zoom, so it works only as a prime at 17mm.
The little latch that locks it moves seemingly as usually - so I can lock and unlock it as before, or so it seems. No changes there
I know it is lens and not the camera mount, because other lenses are OK.
What could have happened? How can I fix it? (If it is fixable)
Are there things I can try on my own, before going to professional service?

  3.
I always welcome rare chance to drive for hours on roads. So 10-14 hours is a piece of cake :) Don't plan on spending all the time in the car, but an opportunity is welcomed.
Smokies is of interest. I tentatively mean Blue Ridge parkway, though if there are more to do in Smokies, I would definitely consider it.
Are there any particular destinations to consider? I am afraid that I may get stuck on some beautiful view, spend a lot of time there by the road and totally miss a hidden gem somewhere within 5-10 miles off the road.

  4.
Hello,
Can anyone help with planning road trip to Blue Ridge mountain region for a 5 days trip ?

I am a photo enthusiast interested in landscape vista, wildlife and anything else interesting.
Here are some details:
- I am going on a solo trip from New York. Have 7 full days available.
- Interested in
- photo opportunities,
- hiking opportunities.
- wildlife photo and sighting

I don't mind a little harder hike to get to the place with great camping or photo or animals
spots.
- Would like not to drive for too much
- This is considered vacation, so would like to make some relaxing time with the book in a scenic place.
Can you help with the itinerary? It is a round trip i a sedan car, I would like to have a chance seeing some things on a way "there" and other things on the way "back"
I will list equipment for photos and hiking I have, so to help narrow down what maybe the more useful suggestions.
As a photo equipment is concerned, I am going with Nikon D7000
- Sigma 17-50/f2.8 (have ND filter for it, and Circular Polarizer )
- Nikor 55-300/f3.5-5.6
- Nikor 35mm/f1.8G
- Basic entry level tripod - not ideal for long hikes, but OK.
- 2 32Gb cards and 2 8Gb cards.
- 3 batteries for the camera.

  8.
Thanks, Peter.
And it is not that much of an issue when I am doing landscapes or portraits, since I can stay longer and adjust.
However, with action photos, like with the Saxon concert above, it becomes a problem

  9.
Thank you,oh dear community for all the suggestions. My biggest problem seems, I do not always know what information to look for in my learning .. you are helping with that to the great extent
Here are some examples with my comments.
1) what I mean about "juiciness" and "depth"

To me, this photo looks flat. In that sense, that it seems that a drummer and guitarist are on a same level, though drummer was about 8 feet behind. And I was very close to the stage. The photo doesn't convey those 8 feet
2) focusing - 2 shots approximately similar in settings

and the next one is somehow out of focus. Why is it the camera did not pick it up?

  10.
Hello,
I am not even sure how to phrase the question I am having, so forgive me if it sounds unclear
I am using Nikon D7000 with the Sigma OS 17-50mm/f.2.8 lens
The problem is that I "do not like how my photos come out". This is the best way I can describe it. Basically, I think they come out shallow. Lacking that that juiciness and depth I would expect from such equipment.
Is it anything, I am doing wrong?
My one guess on what is going on, is that "I do not know" how to focus properly" (autofucus combinations, range selecting, etc...) can it be? If so, are there resources to read/watch to study this? I also use Nikor 35mm/1.8 and Nikor 55-300/3.5-5.6, but these are not my regular lenses. The result are better with them, but still .. something is missng

  11. What are the expectationsbof a lifespan of a modern all purpose lens? Lie 18-200mm, when is it time to change? 2 years? Is it done? Does the quality of pictures degrades with time? Or is it more like 10 years? Moderate travel use..
  12.
Hello, community
Please help me to figure out this dilema
I am going on a hiking trip to Colombia's Lost City. It will be a 6-day hike in a jungle with the river crossing and maybe rains.
I am looking for advice on a back pack, so that it will be small enough for this trip, pack all the necessary stuff and be safe enough to keep my Nikon D7000 with 2 lenses and 2 extra batteries in it.

If anyone can suggest anything else regarding such a trip, please share.

  13.
How do I figure out the distance to the subject for a given aperture/shutter?
I feel that a lot of times, I am out of focus because I choose wrong aperture/shutter for the distance to the subject.
I know aperture effects depths of field, but not sure how to narrow down this seemingly simple task of positioning myself for the shot. Is there a formula? Or a technique to measure?
For example,
A) I am photographing a subject within 3-5 feet from me, and the goal is for it to be a portrait. I know to widen my aperture as
much as possible, lower the ISO, and set the shutter accordingly. No problem here.
B) Same but my subject is 40 feet away, and I want a mountain range in the background. I make my aperture thinner, well
depending if I have a good support to lengthen the shutter more or not.
I understand these simple cases.

But, suppose
C) On a concert, I can get close of far away from performer, and I kind of want it to have a blurry background but do want to catch some greens and blues and purple lights in front and in back of performer. Sometimes I get lucky .. but often either lights are great but face is out of focus or opposite. I get a face perfect, but the image looks boring and doesn't convey the concert dynamics.
Any advise?

Thanks

  14.
Wow !! :) Soo much responses:)
Just to clarify .. we are both men, both adults, and with everything all right about us. And though not close friends, know each other on a "pal" and "hi-bye" level :)

I wasn't asking what to be aware of :) But thanks for caring ..
I was just trying to find out going market rate :) I don't want to ask him for a free lesson and at the same time do not want to entice him as an easy paying client :)

  15. Great shot. I think I could have been on that show.. or at least on that tour...
  16.
Hi, came to an unusual (to me) situation.
I hang out a lot on local concerts and jams, for the purpose of photography. And there is a professional photographer who comes over every now and then. He is not a friend or anything of sorts, but we talk and hang out while on the subject.
Recently he saw me posting some pics on a fb, praised me, and offered to give me some lessons.
Now, I can imagine its a common practice to find an instructor this way, but he did not say anything about compensation. Now, he is commercially a working photographer. I am wandering if I agree to take some lessons from him, how much can it hurt financially?
Thanks.

  17.
Thanks, all
I think you reassured me in not considering the 35mm size. I will think about the other focal lenth

  18.
Shun, I would imagine not. Unless this Nikor 35mm is sooo much superior to what I have that it would be worth it. So is it ? or is it Not?
Question is for both DX and FX formats.

  19.
OK, Thank you very much. So, I take it like majority of you agree that a $200 will be the choice to go.
Given that, and supposedly I go with this choice, would you advise differently if I told you that I currently own Sigma 17-50/f2.8 lens? Will I find the DX version of 35mm Nikor usable and have a room to use it? Also, how is it's auto-focusing speed ?

    Lens choice

Hello, please help me decide:

I want to buy a 35mm lens for Nikon D7000
So, I am in between:

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens

and

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED Lens

The difference is $400 and later is a full frame, while first is D formatted.
Supposedly, I can shed $600 for 2nd lens. Will I experience a tripled benefit from it?
I shoot everything - street, portraits, concerts, landscapes. (I know I won't find this lens suitable for absolutely everything, but I plan to keep it in a bag and always find a use for it)
