I would like to second Emily's point about using people. Editors like people and bright colors, and I'm afraid cliche scenes. You have already achieved great respect on this board for the quality of your pictures and your information. If you are going for publications, you might look at those publications with an eye toward how their selections would be different from what you like to do for yourself and then shoot for both.

Also, remember the glass on a big lens can frighten birds as it must look like the eye of a huge predator. Try to keep it shaded.

The short answer is yes. Ex. Strong ethnic faces, cute babies, Romantic scenes, Nostolgic, etc. But again, I assume you have permission from your subjects to do this.

I don't want to sound like the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, but there are so many beautiful places to see in China besides the usual tourist attactions, that I would suggest an extended visit. I would also I second the above notes on picking the right season and visiting Tibet.
I have pictures from western China that people think were taken in the 4 corners of the USA.

Sorry, I fought with the editing portion and lost. Please excuse typos. Actually I seemed to had lost the whole answer. If this is a repeat, sorry.
I would suggest contacting a local Chinese photographer/guide, who was provide the right kind of vehicles, drivers, cheap, adequate places to stay. The back roads in China are not easy to navigate. Also, there many other beautiful places in the back country of China. With your camera skills, you should return with more outstanding and unique pictures. I will e-mail you some contacts if I can find them, but not in the near future.

A short article in this morning's paper talked about a good flower
season in Death Vally this year because of the heavy rains. Some
flowers are alreay in bloom in some parts and some dry lakes and
washes have water. There is snow in other parts.

Ice patterns and tree shapes against cloudy skies.

Be prepared for many non-photo, low interest calls such as patient transport, fender bender, domestic dispute, etc which will keep the scanner busy and lesson your interest.

The majority of the time, the light will be changing constantly, giving you different choices. Much to my surprise, some of my best deesert shots were taken at noon. Right angle, right conditions, etc. Bottom line - add variety to your landscapes.

Texture screens, cut-up stockings, fine household screen or netting, etc.

I don't think you will be happy with a Reflex lens.

Nylon stocking over lens.

A lightning caused fire is being allowed to burn itself out. Smokey
skies are affecting areas over 100 miles away. I understand a few
areas may be closed. For confirmation and update, visit Yosemite web
site before making a special trip there. I have been there during
controlled burns and it is very hard to get good pictures.

Yes, home processing can be as good as pro labs. You have given one ot reasons for doing home processing. Others are distance from lab, time factor (do it now) and fun.

Families love picts of baby taking bath. Baby always happy.

One of my and that family favorite was "Grandma" holding the baby with the usual necessary drip towel over her shoulder and a very fond look on her face.

Notes from old EK reference book list the introduction of Kodachrome in 1935. No speed written down. (Book no longer mine). Interesting study you are doing.

Do Not miss a chance to see Mono Lake. Plan for sunrise or sunset. Also, as mentioned above, Oct. is a great time for fall colors in nearby canyons.

While in Bishop don't miss the bakery or the dried meat shop for uniqueness and gourmet delight. (Lot's of good places to eat in Bishop).

I am not a people photographer, but my friend is, and I am constantly amazed with the ease with which she approaches strangers and asks to photograph them including posing them for the best lighting and effect. She does a great job. She is never hesitant and has complete confidence and somehow makes her approach seem flattering to the subject. Sorry, I can't give any exact words, but I have yet to see a turndown. Usually the subjects are flattered.

Keep an open mind about your photo subjects. You will also have a chance to record some of the passing traditions such as beading, weaving, tanning, food, drummers, dances, baby baskets, etc.
