I'm also a student and recently went through the same thing. I ended up buying a refurbished samsung 215tw for around $200 on the auction site. It's a 21inch LCD with an 8-bit S-PVA panel. Most budget monitors that you see in stores are 6-bit TN panels, which is inferior for photo editing. I am quite happy with this samsung and after calibration my prints match my screen just about as perfect as can be. This monitor is however discountinued, so if you go this route be sure that you can return it if there are any problems.

Also I would suggest buying the canon oversize eyecup Ed-d, it made a world of a difference when looking through the viewfinder, especially with glasses, another thing a wish was available for my 40d.

I have the 7e, and always thought the eye control was wonderful, never had a problem working with my bifocals. It was why I waited to go digital, just kept hoping Canon would put it in a DSLR. Gave up last year and bought a 40D, I'm still trying to get used to manually selecting focus points.

Looking at my 7e and the grip, all the contacts are on the part of the grip that goes into the battery chamber in the camera. The only thing I can think of is trying to clean the contacts.

I use Paint Shop Pro X2 and I also can not open RAW files from my 40Din the program. According to the corel website this version of the program will support up to the 30D but the 40D is not listed as a supported camera.
