  1. Fremont Tree Hole by Hin Man, on Flickr I kept this picture as the off-focus rendering make it like an abstract. Shot was made inside a Fremont Tree hole where an explorer visiting the state park area lived once. Not much retouching except that I chose not to throw away this off-focus picture in pitch black cave-like tree hole inside a red tree in Henry Cowell Redwood State Park. Cheers, Hin
  2. This is not a big lens, quite compact with quick to focus in a 1-touch zoom design. Starts at 150mm and extend to 70mm Tamron Adaptall-2 70-150mm f/3.5 (20A) by Hin Man, on Flickr And I used K-x and this zoom in 2010 Lonely Tree In Sunol Glen by Hin Man, on Flickr and re-edited in May 2017 Cheers, Hin
  3. There is no right and wrong in editing to fine tune a picture. I can sometime go overboard in the retouching department b&w version Happiness by Hin Man, on Flickr I know many of you or a retoucher may like the original one instead original Happiness In Blue by Hin Man, on Flickr I edited both pictures but the b&w is my refinement and vision in flipping the action from left to right for comfort of viewers. It is more natural for me to view things from let to right. I can't fathom any retoucher will see the way that I see my pictures. But I do think professional retoucher will know more how to best a picture to another level. I am open to find a retoucher for trial. Cheers, Hin
  4. Josh, thank you very much for your valuable inputs and insights. My brother in law is a professional shooter for wedding and he hands his work to his company and the rest goes to retouchers as well. I know that is likely the most logical way to make money in scale. As an amateur and enthusiast, I find it not as fulfilling because I find the process in editing photos the most rewarding piece in the process. Taking picture is key but the editing part to mold the final picture into the essence of the photo takes the beating out of an ordinary photo to a great photo and I will be empty without it. Maybe when I finally shoot photos for a living, it will be a very different story. But I doubt if majority photographers will not have a problems in letting someone retouch their own photos. It is unless someone you know in retouching is better, I will feel uncomfortable if I let someone else retouch my own pictures without knowing the retoucher work. Nobody thinks alike and it is not a partial match in style in the retouching process, I would rather do it myself if I can afford to. What if I like the picture darker and softer than that of the retoucher. Any minute difference will create a different mood and essence on what the picture is shot for. In my view, a good picture always have a tone of color, a view with brightness soothed to the tone and hue, luminosity and saturation on all channels meticulously adjusted for the spirit of the picture. I know I may be exaggerating here but that is roughly what I am thinking. I will never say no to anything as I am forcing myself to think out-of-the-box on ideas and recommendations. Thank you again for your insights and valuable pointers. It i well taken. Cheers, Hin
  5. I have this sleeper for a long time, I was biasly thinking of the Vivitar/Kiron copy of 70-150mm f/3.8. I have been unfair to the Tamron Adaptall-2. I almost sell my copy for a meager $39.00. That didn't last when I went for a work out in Homedepot on easy flower pictures. The Tamron 20A bests the Kiron Vivitar in the close up shots and better bokeh. The Kiron is very cold in the tone while the Tamron is still cold but it works well in bokeh. Sharpness goes to the Kiron and no doubt about that especially wide open shots. 20160605-DSC01548 by Hin Man, on Flickr 20160605-DSC01545 by Hin Man, on Flickr The close up flower shots in my rare blog post in Hin's Photo Corner: Tamron adaptall-2 70-150mm f/3.5 (20A) Test Shots Cheers, Hin

  7. Likely all were shot in f/3.5 with the zoom lens. Most were shot in 150mm and I zoom in to frame in wider view in some of them. The lens is a one-touch zoom and the smooth focusing ring allows me to snap subject into focus. Focusing takes some guesswork as my eyes are plagued with aging decline. 20170513-DSC06528 by Hin Man, on Flickr url=20170513-DSC06498]Santa Cruz Boardwalk[/url] by Hin Man, on Flickr Father & Daughter Beach Walk in B&W by Hin Man, on Flickr Santa Cruz Boardwalk Bokeh by Hin Man, on Flickr I forget the film simulation that used for the above picture, it is likely using Kodak Ektachrome or Kodachrome 64 professional Cheers, Hin
  8. I took these casual walk-around pictures in Santa Cruz Pier the day before Mother's Day. On Saturday, I did my first rehab hiking 2 months after ACL surgery in Henry Cowell State Park with flat trail and it was a great feeling. And at night we visited the Santa Cruz Pier where we could spot the Santa Cruz Boardwalk from the pier. In traveling light, I used my Sony mirror-less instead of Pentax. And I have used this lens on Pentax K-x, K20D and K-5 before. It is more well balanced on the Pentax. This zoom lens gets a good recommendation from Hin but I still missed my old faithful with cheaper and likely lesser known manual zoom lens with the Kiron 70-150mm f/3.8 with a 2x tc Santa Cruz Boardwalk Bokeh by Hin Man, on Flickr Santa Cruz Pier Lamp Post by Hin Man, on Flickr Sky Window by Hin Man, on Flickr shot with a Sony E 35mm f/1.8 prime strolling to find potential dinner place for pre-mother's day celebration. We ended up going home for dinner instead. I made dinner with wife together -- a big mistake as I scrambled when hungry. Father & Daughter Beach Walk by Hin Man, on Flickr Double Down by Hin Man, on Flickr I woke up very happy on Monday still thinking how good my birthday was and how great we did on the Mother's Day 2017 with visit to a Guitar Center with drums, guitar, piano and others for fun play. I doubt if Monday was anything that could top my weekend experience. But this picture gives me hope as it is a double down kind of picture that relates one light after the other. I will name it 'double down' Keeping Us Warm by Hin Man, on Flickr Hope you like my walk-around pictures before Mother's Day 2017. Cheers, Hin

@JDMvW, I have never shot Kodachrome and I was close to trying it before the last shop stopped the processing. That is a beautiful shot of China Town and I want to thank you in sharing. I admire film and it is always charming to see photos shot in films. No matter how I dice it on post processing, those color ones or b&w never come close to the analog output. Thanks again.

  13. The Kiron close focus in 70mm is about 1:4 and I don't even remember the detail until I check my old blog post on this lens with the version that has 2-touch zoom and the version that I had long time ago carried a 2x multiplier. I remembered I used the lens without any extra add-on filter. It is likely that I made those shots in the 1st post on 70mm and have roughly 1:4 magnification. Hin's Photo Corner: Vivitar 70-150mm f/3.8 from Kiron with 2x multiplier In re-editing the photos, I set my export to 86% by mistakes and the uploaded pictures may have a low resolution in 1st post. Both the K-x and K20D that I might have used at the time had lower resolution than the current one in K-3 or similar. Thanks, Hin

#3 Believe Or Not -- My Ultra Wide Angle 20170418-DSC05833 by Hin Man, on Flickr My widest lens is my DA 15mm f/4.0 but when I go traveling light, I use my mirror-less gear and currently I simply don't have an ultra wide angle lens that I can count on. Instead, I am using a tiny sensor with an action camera for the occasional need of ultra wide angle. I am not proud of it as it has distortions all over the edges. I have an old version of LR 5.7 on my macbook and pc and the only lens profile closest to Sony Action Cam AS100VR is the Sigma ultra wide or the GoPro Hero 3; both did a worse job in correction and I have not figured out the right manual correction. I have asked Justin to share the profile if he manages to find one. Unfortunately, he seldom shoots still photo with the video gadget. Mine is the older copy gotten in 2015 when I got more trips on skiing and I found the purchase right for my money at the time comparing to Hero3 as it works with a remote control worn as a watch to Rec/Stop on video or take Interval pictures continuously in 2 sec intervals. And the OSS with image stabilization was absent in Gopro Hero3. I have used Sony Action Cam quite a bit but it has no tuning of anything and there is no manual adjustment to the 170 degree shooting. I wish it has an adjustment for a narrower view and with less distortion. I don't quite know how the 170 degree translates to focal length in 35mm term. It is wider than any of my lens in possession. 20170418-DSC05821-2 by Hin Man, on Flickr 20170418-DSC05829 by Hin Man, on Flickr And with some editings, I find it usable Valley Of Fire by Hin Man, on Flickr Valley Of Fire -- Slot Canyon by Hin Man, on Flickr Sorry to break the rules of 3 pictures. My excuse come as all these are related to my weird wide angle usage on my Sony Action Cam with AS100VR.

#1 Crying Rock in Right Crying Rock in Right by Hin Man, on Flickr It was my 6th week after ACL reconstruction surgery and I hiked down the path to the right of the Crying Rock. When I reached down to the base with a sandy path to Slot Canyon, I looked back and I shot a number of pictures on the rock that I hiked down with a single crutch and I was not paying attention to the crying man in the rock until someone on Facebook and another different person on Flickr commented on one of the related pictures and sure enough, I see the crying man in the right side of the rock. Picture was taken in visiting Valley Of Fire State Park that is about an hour drive North East of Las Vegas that is borderline with Arizona. A fantastic place to visit when the temperature ranges from low 60 to mid 80. Earlier in spring time would have been nicer.
  17. @matt based on your inputs on K-S2, I may look closer to K70 and KP. I don't need a fast camera but I do need a smaller setup that has a flip out screen and weather seal. I am a new comer to K-3 and I am so impressed with the camera and I wish I had gone onboard sooner as I now hardly shoot with my K-5. The K-3 is so much quicker in AF and have many subtle improvements. The K-5 does have better higher iso shooting experience but with some editing, the K-3 is about in-par. Overall, I am very impressed with K-3 and K-3II and I wish Pentax keep the aps-c up and running along with K-1.
  18. Thank you John, I have the Cosin 1:1 matched macro adapter that originally comes with Vivitar (likely made by cosina) 100mm f/3.5 1:2 macro. If I am not mistaken, the Pentax may have this 100mm f/3.5 macro lens. It is a very valued macro lens in the Pentax community. And I missed my K-x very much. It used to be my traveling lens in New Zealand way back in 2010/2011 timeframe. I was sad to see it going to Pentax service as it died on memory card reader. I later sold it with a cute 4 million knock-off similar bag. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/hinioman/macro_adapter/IMGP0350.jpg Hin's Photo Corner: Cosina/Pentax/Phoenix/Promaster 1:1 Matched Macro adapter And I used the above combination for my favorite colors in Green, a bit of pink, blue, and B&W photos 20080619-2593351458_d33b0929e5_o-Edit by Hin Man, on Flickr 20080620-a50macro_cosina-Edit by Hin Man, on Flickr Blue by Hin Man, on Flickr All these photos are re-edited in Color Efex Pro in Nik Collection trying to enhance with film simulation. There has been couple of occasions that I could have bought a copy of the Vivitar 100mm f/3.5 1:2 macro but I have refrained well in getting another lens. Now I have two copies of the 1:1 macro adapter in 49mm which will work well as diopter like a UV filter for all of my 49mm lens and I have a few 46mm in Sigma Art E-mount series that I can easily use the adapter for the occasional close up that I love shooting without getting into serious macro with lighting, tripod and the immense amount patience challenge with wind, backlit scenes and the lack of articulating screen in Pentax gear that I use with K-x, K20, K5 and now K-3. Cheers, Hin
  19. Lonely Tree In Sunol Glen by Hin Man, on Flickr I took this photo way back in 2010 where my two boys were studying in Sunol Glen. It has always been a pleasant drive along Sunol Glen seeing all the trees and the scene can sometime be spectacular with clouds forming over the tree's shoulder. I envy the tree for its solitude and breathtaking view while enjoying the sunshine with shades. The shot was made with Exif on 85mm and I tagged it with 70-150mm, so it must be coming from my last 70-150mm MF zoom with Tamron Adaptall-2 70-150mm f/3.5 (20A) and I used it with Pk-A adapter and hence the exif are all intact. Somehow, no lens work alike with equal characters and sure enough when I trimmed all my other Kiron 70-150mm with 1 throw and 2 throws and in both M42 and K-mount, what I get now is a PK-A exif friendly zoom lens but I sure miss the sharpness along with quick focusing and a shorter build from the Kiron.
  20. The Kiron zoom may be a bargain for the K-1 if you find a good copy. On K20D and K-x timeframe, I used it in street shooting. I miss Javier as he is one of the best street shooters with a 24mm. I can't shoot like Javier as I like to shoot in stealth mode ready to hide and run as a chicken when I feel embarrassed and guilty in disturbing others. That is me, I can be timid and friendly at the same time. My favorite subject are those not moving and staying perfectly still for my shots. You can see it in my past shots while visiting SF mission street area close to the Bart stations in Powell and Embarcadero street SF 2008 Photos Re-edit by Hin Man, on Flickr Both of my boys never get tired in visiting San Francisco. As I get older and have less patience in driving back to back traffic in the weekends, I dislike visiting SF with a car. But I have to take my preferences aside and go sometime as my family stills love SF the same way they did years ago. They never enjoy waiting for their Daddy to take snapshots on the streets, I always get hurried in my shots. I need a faster approach to framing and shooting. With my family, I will have a very difficult time shooting in films -- my excuses.
  21. SF 2008 Photos Re-edit by Hin Man, on Flickr Shot with the similar lens likely a Kiron 70-150mm f/3.8 in either K or M42 mount The above flower shot was taken around the same time and when I wish I can find some green to mix it well into this thread. But what the heck, I am finding excuses to post. I am color blind when it comes to finding a reason to post. The thread title will become misleading after this post. It is kind of sad that all of my longest friends in Pentaxian community in this forum have gone quiet. My heart is always in Photo.net as I was born digital in this community way back in 2007 when I first got my Pentax K100D. People like Justin, G. something (the 1 of the 4 pentaxians at one point along with Kerrick James), the Marcus who always have issues with my macro shots, Rose, Matt & Marialena, my very admired and respected Todd, Douglas, Miserere, Peaches & Curry, Bobs, and Dave and his son, Andrew, and many of you whom I have likely forgotten the names such as Javier, Robins etc. Hope you are all well and come back sometime for a timely visit.
  22. Droplets in B&W by Hin Man, on Flickr Droplets In Green with Provia by Hin Man, on Flickr Droplets In B&W by Hin Man, on Flickr Droplets In Green by Hin Man, on Flickr These bunch of pictures were shot in 2010 with Pentax K-x and I shot them likely with the Kiron 70-150mm f/3.8 in M42 mount. I no longer have this zoom lens and I have replaced it with a Tamron Adaptall-2 70-150mm f/3.5 (20A). And I do miss this Kiron zoom lens a bunch. The Kiron has a charming characters in good sharpness and it is quick to focus making the zoom lens well suited to street shooting in getting subjects closer from a distance.
  23. I ended up in re-purchasing DA 21mm f/3.2 used along with my DA 15mm f/4.0. I am still wanting a wide zoom and I wish the 10-17 is not a fish eye or if there is a cheap option out there that can beat or get close to the DA 20-40 in quality and size. I may look into the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 version or the older version. I am hoping the KP to have a bigger buffer. I don't mine its slower frame rate but I do mine the filled buffer when you need to shoot in a sequence and expect it to deliver. If a refined version that is the true follow up on K3-II, the new camera will make a lot of people happy. I want it to be smaller like the KP and with everything in K3 II plus a flip-out screen like the KP and touch screen on AF points. It will be super nice if Pentax spend time on the AF to close up the gaps to others on AF performance.
