So how good (or bad) is the autofocus of the X100 compare to the sony's?
-
Yes Frank, a tilting screen is nice... The NEX6 should be a great camera. It has a viewfinder, a big sensor, a superfast autofocus, very good dynamic range i suppose, not too many pixels (so low light / high iso should be decent) lenses are getting available (zeiss 24mm or sigma 19mm). The only problem for me is the shutter noise...
-
Thanks for your comments. Well Brad, i shouldn't have said "if you have tried both cameras..." In fact what is interesting is the feedback from user's experience. So welcome Brad to share yours...

Hello there, i need a silent shooting camera. I was going to buy the fuji x100 but now with the new sony RX100?
I do street photography and quite often with very low light. Of course i look for the BEST IQ and as best as
possible autofocus. I have my eyes on the new Sony NEX 6 but this is another topic. If you have tried both
cameras, your coments are very welcome. Thanks

the olympus has image stabilization, weather seal, a nice choice of good lenses, super fast autofocus, great customization, tilt screen, sony do not have the IS, the weather seal, and not so many good lenses. But just go to the store and grab the olympus, maybe it will fit in your hand, i didn't like because too small, i had to keep a finger under the camera to hold it. Just not easy and comfortable vs the sony feel so good... So in conclusion, they are both great i believe, details are different and it is best to hold it before you buy it
-
That is right, the chosen lens makes a big difference, that is why i like to check different sources. Now i am reading that according to this: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony_nex_7_rolling_review.shtml#28 IQ of the nex5 is similar to IQ of nex7... more to think about (nex5 is way cheaper)
In conclusion, i think that the olympus and the sony are very similar in term of overall qualities, the olympus has more features for street shooting, but the handling sucks for me...
-
I agree with you Frank, bigger sensor, better IQ. That is the theory. Now it is wise to compare these babies, so i look at this: http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM and this http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonynex7/27, and also this: http://www.digitalrev.com/article/fuji-x-pro1-vs-sony/MTc0OTE5MTU_A and let you decide...

Thanks for all comments. I have been digging and digging on all i could find on the web about these cameras; i came up with 3 winners, the fuji X pro 1 (best IQ), the olympus OM D (best autofocus, and best over all) and the sony Nex7. From these 3 i chose the Olympus, because of its overall qualities (for street shooting) like Af, stabilizator, weather seal, and IQ similar to the sony. Then i went to a photo store who has them all in stock and... man the sony just fit in my hand so great, the battery compartment is just perfect to hold the camera, to twist it, to shoot from the waist, to juggle... I gave up the fuji because of its poor AF. When i hold the olympus, it wasn't so good, i always had to keep my smallest finger (called picky? sorry for my english, i'm french) under the camera in order to hold it properly. It's too small and there is not enough rubber or shape to hold the camera properly and easily . Didn't like...
So now i am thinking of buying the sony...

Woao, lots of good infos! Thanks a lot guys... Yes i agree that fast (and accurate) focusing is even more important, than IQ and yes, prime lens is probably the way to go with these little cameras. I have been looking at the "compare"page" from DPreview, comparing the NEX5, the OM-D-M5, the Xpro1 and the NEX7. I'm quite puzzled by the difference between RAW and JPG (i always shoot raw and do the work with lightroom)Another point i consider: being able to change settings manually (without going through the lcd screen) is greatly welcomed...
-
Guys, can you please stick to the point? I am not asking for your personal views about street photography, all i want to know is the differences between the so many models of compact 4/3rd or mirrorless cameras!
(so i can pick the one that fits MY needs!) Thank you.
-
Yes Ty, DR is important. So the Fuji has a better DR than the Olympus? What about the Sony NEX7 compare to the Fuji?
As i mentioned earlier, i shoot a lot with low light so for me IQ in high iso is important...
So many of these little cameras out there... I dont care about the brand but the IQ.
A zoom with constant aperture f:2.8 is what i have on my canon 5d mk2 and i am happy with it. So if i can get that on a 4/3rd, i'll be happy!
Thanks for your comment

thank you for sharing your knowledge Mr Tran, it really enlighten me!
BTW, who used the word choice?
-
Talking about lenses for these babies, are they of equal quality? (olympus/zuiko vs fuji)
-
yeah... i think i'll have to start using prime lenses...
-
Forgot i thing: i won't buy a leica... too expensive + not so good in high iso / low light
-
Ok, my gear today is the canon 5d mk2 with the 24/70 f2.8 It is just the best i can have for my style of photos.
(the only thing i wish i had is a complete silent mode like the M9 leica)
BUT i am getting old and it is quite heavy... So i look at the mirrorless for some times. It seems that some
models are getting decent IQ even in high iso (i shoot a lot with low light)
So if you are familiar with these small cameras, will you share a bit of your knowledge?
What i need is: (of course) best IQ and auto focus possible (i know, it is not a 5dmk2)
I want a zoom 24/70 as fast as possible (i know, prime lenses... but i' just not friendly with them)
strong built, 16Mp so i can crop a lot...
Other gadgets are not very important.
SO i have seen the new olympus OM-D and the fuji X PRO 1
The olympus seems to have all i need, it shows a quite good IQ at 3200iso:

your opinion?
Thanks a lot

ok, i swap the battery of my 7D with the one of my 5D2 and... same mess. So i believe the camera has a problem. I was just wondering if it could be from the firmware? What if i re-install the V.2.0.9 instead of the latest V.2.1.1?
I feel i should ask before i downgrade the firmware. Thanks
-
Yes, i thought about it... There was no "best by"date but on the battery that was in the camera i could see the number 11printed. On the new one there is 13. So I figured that i may be for expiration date 2011 and 2013?...
Anyways, i'll try to get another battery next time i go to the "city"
Thanks

Gosh! At the minute i write this, the settings get wild again...
-
Thanks a million!
I think it did the trick. I am in a remote location of south India and luckily the only clock booth of the village had ONE battery Cr1616! Now the settings remains, I'll check the time tomorrow but i believe it'll be ok.
Larry, i use the c1 c2 c3 modes all the time and they have always been fine. But thanks for mentioning.
Love this forum!

Hi Folks
a mysterious issue here: If I change a setting like "LCD display brightness" from auto to manual; when i turn off
and on the camera it is back to auto. MORE EMBARRASSING: The time set in the camera run slower than it should
be... I shoot with 2 cameras, a 7D and a 5D mk2 and i have to re- synchronize them almost every day.
I have re-install the firmware V.2.1.1 but it didn't help
I am in India for another 3 months, my camera has a french warranty... rrrr!
Any suggestion very very welcome!

Yes, thanks, i have download the software gphoto2 and then the Homebrew. I just don't know what to do with it, i don't understand nothing about the "terminal"and all these funny lines...
It seems like it is not just an ordinary software that you install in your application folder and just run.
Anyways, i think i'm gonna live with the mystery of my 7D shuttercount

-

Thank you guys for your answers. Well too bad there are no software for the 7D; i like to know how many click my camera has since, yes, it can fail anytime but still, it has been tested for 150 000 clicks, and i shoot a lot!
Wish i knew how to deal with the linux thing...

Hi folks
Just got a used 7D body. I want to know how many shots it took. Can't find any software online to check the
shutter count, exept the "gphoto2" thing (
http://www.twam.info/software/read-out-canon-eos-7d-shuttercount-on-os-x) that i don't understand at all (for
linux gig i guess?) I have a mac and a window computer, the old 40dShutterCount.app doesn't work for the 7D
Any clue?
Thanks
Sony RX100 or Fuji X100 for silent street shooting
in Mirrorless Digital Cameras
Posted
Woao, so many comments, thanks a lot guys.
Well, i tried a NEX 5n over the week end and really didn't like the lack of viewfinder. The handling was a bit odd too but i guess i can get use to it. I am so used to my 5Dmk2. So now my choice is between the NEX6 or the Fuji X100. I went to the store to hold the X100 and it does feels very nice. The NEX7 (same size as the NEX 6) was much better than the NEX 5n, slightly bigger and much nicer to handle. Regarding the autofocus, i don't know if i can disable the AF with the way i shoot, i too shoot ballet dance ( www.shaktimage.com ) and i always use constant focusing right on the subject. Results are mostly good. In fact, when i shoot portraits during concerts, i manage to choose witch eye will be sharp, and witch one will be blur. So yes, i like to have a fast autofocus (the 5dmk2 isn't the best one for DSLR though)
This new camera will be the carry around one, i know they are both very different from each other, both with pro and con. The Fuji is probably the best one to handle for street photo but the sony offers more versatility: for sure a faster AF, choice of lenses, tilting screen, HD video ...
