That's ridiculous. 5/6 of my camera lenses are used. And my $4/pair garage sale speakers that are at least 30 years old and clearly been built by an amateur sustained me all through college and still play clearer, with less distortion and louder than my $300 fancy-dancy "Paradigm" speakers.

It's nice to see that the 1.4 wide open has an edge over the 1.8 wide open. It perhaps makes the 3X price tag worthwhile. Although these aren't the latest AF versions....

I'm assuming your budget is somewhat unlimited, since you clearly have a lot invested at this point anyways. I'd get the Tamron 17-50 VR, 70-200 VR2, 24 1.4 (yes I think I'd buy it for DX even, if I had the money) and Sigma 50 1.4, I'd wait for a new AFS 85 1.4 and get that too.

Of course none of those things will "improve" your photos, as you so desire. Most of my absolute best photos taken in the past 3 years were with my D40 and 18-200, despite other "better" equipment being available...

A 28 f2 for 600 bucks. One of the few lenses I'd buy right now.

Iincredibly low eh? show's what I know! From what I've gather so far it does indeed sound like an RF license is what they are after. This is one of the "elite" universities in Canada, and the images are of their highest profile, brand new nano technology research building.
And I do hear Vizibeckistan is quite nice to photograph this time of year, Mikael ;)

I certainly do have the rights, despite it being "for" the university newspaper. I used my own equipment and I don't get paid for my services. Plus I've told the paper's Editor in Chief about being approached and he fully supports my endeavors.

In this type of situation would you expect that they (public affairs) would be the ones to provide the contract?

-

I'm the photo editor for my university newspaper. I put out a photo feature showcasing the interior of a new building that we are constructing. Shortly after publication someone from the Public Affairs department contacted me and they want to know if they can reach a deal with me to use the photos to advertise the new building, and university in general.
The use will be for the web, and perhaps in an annual promotional magazine.

I'm thinking somewhere in the $20-50/image range would be appropriate... but that would be just off the top of my head. Should I ask for me if an image is going to be showcased in a magazine that will print in a run of say 5000 copies?
thanks!

I've backpacked through the rockies for several days during the last 2 summers. I've done all the typical big tourist spots between banff and jasper. I'm looking for advice as where to go now that man not be the most well known. I've heard going south of banff down the mountains to radium hot springs is quite nice. I've only got 3 or 4 days, starting from edmonton.
Any suggestions?

I'm sure everywhere in the world has amazingly stunning vista! If you're coming to north america to take in the landscape though you would be missing out if you didn't spend a week + in utah and arizona, the canadian rockies, and newfoundland.

The Dxx series appears to be on a 2 year cycle, which suggests that this August its replacement will be announced. however The Dxx is also on a cycle of reusing the Dxxx sensor. And no D400 has been announced yet. It is unlikely that Nikon will introduce a new sensor with higher MP in a Dxx body before the equivalent Dxxx one
So my guess is that we will see a D90s this fall. With no signifcant improvements and only minor tweaks which make it slightly better than but not worth the upgrade from a D90.

-

The D700 will give you the same "reach" with your long lenses as your D70 currently does, since it's 12mp vs 6mp. The D300 will give you even more.

I always buy things with paypal but as a seller I could see the hesitation because it's too easy to get reverse scammed where the buyer simply complains that they didn't recieve the item and charges the money back.
D.B.'s method sounds good too.
Within Canada anyways you can pretty easily setup an electronic transfer linking your email address to your bank account number and email money around. I'm assuming this can probably be done across the border?
I figure you atleast have the security then of the money being in your bank account. And if the buyer(scammer) were to try and get it back they'd have to go through your real life bank, as opposed to some magical internet place called "Paypal"

Also, the correct alignment is always where the "top" of the lens is. Generally right center of the focus scale window. Atleast on my Nikon and Sigma lenses anyways, and in that picture from Dieter above.

I do all my purchasing of second hand camera equipment while meeting people in coffee shops. I've tested large SLRS, flashes, and an 80-200 lens for several minutes with out so much as a boo from anyone, customer or employee.

-

My copy of this lens also has an even haze. I quite dislike it. But I've yet to find anyone to unload it on who will pay me more than $100 :(

The 18-35 is quite compact and lightweight as it is... the only lens that will give you a bit lighter package is the 18-55. The VR version is merely 100 grams lighter than the 18-35 though. You probably wouldn't notice the difference.

So I have access to a whole boat load of old film that my work used way back when before they went digital.
It's all 35mm Kodak.

I wouldn't mind "borrowing" a pack to try out, I haven't used film for 10 years back when I was a early teen though, and I don't know much.

I want to experiment with some landscape works. Could someone reccomend one of these films?

Ektachrome 200
Ektachrome elite 100
Ektachrome 64 professional
Tmax 100 professional
tmax 400 professional

I think these tmax ones are black and white right?

Also, all of this film has expired sometime in the mid 90s. But it has been in a temperature controlled fridge room at 4 degrees celcius for these many years. Will it still be good?

thanks for the advice!

Does the built in motor of the newest version mean that it has manual focus override like the good Nikon AFS lenses?

D200 or D90
in Nikon

Definately go for the D200. I don't know what all the fuss about the noise is. In 8x10s it is not noticable at ISO 400, slight visible at 800 and visible but not really detrimental to the image at 1600.
Besides you can buy a used one for 500-600 and a year from now sell it for the same price if you don't like it.

I find ebay useful for extremely hard to find things, or extremely cheap accessory things. (need 2 umbrellas with stands and attached strobes with bulbs? 60 bucks on ebay)

Kijiji is the real place for deals, I find. A visit once in the morning and at night when I get to and leave work has netted me some excellent deals. Cleaned out an unsucessful pro's lens arsenal a couple months ago, $900 for what would have cost 2300 new.

-

Actually, those are the two (are there others?) G lenses that won't AF on the D40/D3000. They have no aperture ring but also no SWM focus motor.

-

Oh and I forgot to ask. Manual override with the focus ring or do you have to throw the switch?
thanks!

Perfect timing for this thread. I've just discovered this lens and am thinking of getting it.
Possibly a silly question, but I can't find anything concrete on the forums about it. Will this autofocus with the D40? I know it says it has the new tamron built in motor. I just don't know enough about the tamron terminology to be sure that means it will work on the D40/D60
I'd like to reccomend this lens to my college newpaper to buy (and for me to use all the time, haha!) but it would need to focus with our D40s

Can anyone give me the final word on this?

-

how much money you got? On a budget I'd start with a 18-70 or 18-105 + 50 1.8.
With more money I'd go for a 17-55 2.8 and 50 1.4 to start and add a 80/70-200 later.

That's just me, I've never shot water polo before, but I don't think you need a really long lens for it (do you?)

I think the extreme of condeming an entire country (although it's hard to ascertain the "seriousness" of those comments by the individuals when it's only in text form on the internet) as well as the categorical denial of experiencing any problem by professional/well travelled photographers are both statements that are only smearing the actual issue.
The fact is that it does happen and the fact is that it shouldn't. Photographers, and other suspicious people I suppose, get harasses by security, and (worse) police, and that those officers are often acting outside or in abuse of the law. It's a big issue, photographers who experience these altercations should be commended for taking it to the press and to the courtroom for violations against our fundamental rights.
I know that the vast majority of people have never experienced this problem, myself included, but when you come out and delcare that you are a worldly photographer and you have never have an incident you are speaking as somewhat of an "expert witness" and are really pushing the point forward that this is NOT a major issue to be contended with, I hope you realize.

Woo hoo! Getting new equipment!

I just wanted to come share my joy with my fellow Nikonians. I'm the photo editor at my university's newspaper, and this morning, me and the sports editor successfully convinced the board members to buy us a D3s, D300s, 70-200 VR2, 24-70, 16-35VR a CF manfrotto tripod, and 2 SB-900s ! :D
I've never used the multicam 3500 system or any of the other features of these bodies. I'll no doubt be coming for advice in the next few weeks when I get confused!
cheers!
