If you realy want to take small objects... Canon MP-E 65mm. This magnifies upto five times. This means you can take a picture of a grain of rice and have a great A3 printed from it.
But the Canon 100mm 2.8 will is good to start with and learn.

Andrew you went to read the 'other' forums, shame on you! I thought you were a real canonite. I would never dare to make the click...

I have always wondered so and I agree there should be an animal category!

In China it's easy, on every mall door there is a no-photography sign! Of course people still take pictures, especialy in the Ikea stores. But at least the guards have something to back themselves up.

If you have plenty of time you can even rent bikes with guide for about 10 dollars. And never pay 250 dollars for half a day for a car, cause that is a big rip off. Make sure you bargain for everything you buy unless there is a price listed and still.

Even on the Yangtze River Cruise you can get wireless internet but you will have to pay for it! That will probably be the only place where you have to pay for internet in China.
Have fun!

Yesterday I posted a picture on the critique forum. Today I go and check and see that some people gave me points. Out of curiousity I check who the people are and guess what... almost all the accounts are made on the same day and nobody has posted pictures. Anyone has seen this before?
This is the picture; http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?topic_id=1481&msg_id=00U2iF&photo_id=9541832&photo_sel_index=0

A big plain grass field is always fun.
Try not to use flash and just take a big piece of white cardboard with you that you can use as a reflector.

Buy lots of books and post your pictures for comments on different sites. There are some sites where people give you good feedback.

So a polarizing filter won't do the trick?

Those lens caps get missing easily. I once dropped one in a pond when I was changing a lens on a walkway over the pond. But a friend once could not find his lenscap at a hotpot (Chinese fondue kind a thing) and kept on looking, eventually left and the waitress came running after him with the lens cap full of spices. It had been boiling for a while.

Why not trying to put a softbox over the SB600.

What is good to buy in china?

What J Traveller is saying is not true. I've been living in Chengdu for several years and I have bought all my Canon goods here. They are real, the fake that you are talking about are still real good but they don't have a government seal on them. So basicly you have the same thing but you don't pay taxes.
Now for instance camera bags are knock off but that you can see right away.
